A now excitement has been vouchsafed us. It comes just in time to give the quid /nines a “topic," tho city editors a “theme” and to furnish a pungent commentary upon tho boasted superiority of this generation, over generations that have gone before it, in so far ns charity, toleration, liberality, reli gious freedom, and ull that sort of thing, aro con* corned. Look nt the facts ns they are. A mini gets up to preach in the public streets on tho Sab bath,—last Sabbath. The staple of his discourse is the fiercest denunciation of Unman Catholicism athutno and abroad Tim priests are called swin dlers— thieves—-vagabonds—the agents of foreign powers who wish to subvert our republican institu tions, «&c., &c. A portion of the Irish Unman Catholic popula tion, in tlio Eastern part of the city, resent what they call these attacks upon their religion —hy interrupt ing the preacher—whoso name is Pursuits—and at tempting to drive him from the barrel top on which he is mounted. Opposition, however, hecetaoppo* sit ion. The mi live American)*—or at least an or ganized bund 5f young men, also of the lower or der of society here, taking to themselves that np- pelutiim—come to the rescue. A fight ensue j. Tho police interfere. Tho ' street preacher is arrested with several of tho Nu- Thc mob now highly excited, go to the house of Mayor Wester- volt, near by, and threaten to f ‘ pull the bricks about his cars’—unless the reverend agitator, und his companions are released, fits Honor hesitates, but finally concludes, nut to comply with the re quest of tho “peoples.'’ The Justice of tho Court having jurisdiction in that district, meanwhile is roused from his bed, perforce, to give tho parties arrested a hearing. The hearing proceeds amidst an outside clamor about the “liberty of speech” "Romish intolcrence," "foreign influence” etc. etc.—and the result of it all, is the liberation Parsons & Co. This is considered a victory for the Natives, and in order to make the most of it, a grand nuti-Uutholic demonstration Is culled in the Park. The speakers on the occasion nre,'Famous himself, ono Cbaunccy Selin tier, from Philadelphia, und a Mr. Bryce from Kentucky. Archbishop Hughes, Father Bedini und the Pope, cntchcd it awfully, reaelutions were passed reproaching the Mayor, as a "tool uf Romanism," and politely in viting that functionary to resign. The adjournment was carried in the midst of great “enthusiasm” and excitement,—with a resolve to have another de monstration of ihu same sort, at Metropolitan Hall next Wednesday, Meanwhile tho Natives have determined that tltu street preacher shall have another hearing to-morrow (Sunday) and precisely on the sumo spot front which lie addressed tho erowd Iasi Sunday. Tho Homan Catholics threaten to go there and drive him uway. If they do, there will ho a grand r ' L ' 8, row—bloodshed perhaps. Anticipating some suelt trouble, Archbishop Hughes lias issued an ad dress to the clergy and laity, recommending thorn to keep away from the meeting, hut if their Churches are attacked, Ito culls upon them to fight to tlio death. To increase tho excitement, tlio Mayor has issued n Proclamation, calling upon all good citi zens to stay at home, or to go to thoir respective places of public worship. Jle also invokes their at tention to tho “ law" on the subject. How all this is going fh terminute, it is impossible'at this wil ling to forsco.* 'There is littloor no change to note in the money market. The demand ami supply are alike largo, and 1 have no alteration to nutico in quotations. Exchanges continue firm, mid the weekly exports of gold arc increasing, reaching now from u million to a million and u half, and regular at that. This is mainly because the export of cotton is thus fur this season, below lust your’s at this time. Tho fact thut tho receipts ut tho ports are largely behind thoso of lust year, would seem to indicate n small er crop than last year. The Cot ton market continues firm.
