SAVANNAH, GA. WBWwjttV MOHMINP. DEC- rocky captivity of bis oeoan prison. It was thore that a battle greater than Watarloo bogan—the battlo with himself, which was to demonsirato to tho world—not hie horolo qualities, for diaaetroue Waterloo alone accomplished that—but tho naturo of thoio qualities, and their power of endurance un der auch tuala aa ihey wore now about to bo sub mitted to; In short, a battlo who* lesuo should de clare to tho world, not that ho was heroic, but Acts time* ho was a hero 5 and how fnr ho fell short or that standard, the lilfihoM to which mortals aspire, or attain, and from whence ’tie but a step unto di- slnity. With admiring gaxo we had seen him at th# hoadof hia grand army, sweeping like chaff be fore him, tho tinost soldiery ol Europo, and strik ing terror to hor inmost heart; at tho head oi tho council and tho cabinet, confounding, astounding and delighting by tho brilliancy of his powers, and tho unerring sagacity of hia counsels; upon the throne, bearing himself with all tho dignity, grace, nnd majesty of tho proudest king by "divino right.” Tho great man had shown his capacity to load, to guido, to govern and dirocl—it remained to be aeon whether hu could also safer and ietir. St. Uolena was the granite crucible in which his heroism wna to bo tried, and from whence it was to enn rgo, di minished and tarnished, or brighter and more ra diant than over. Power, pomp, parade no longer encircled tho hero with their magic enchantments; tho sublime music of tho battle field was 110 more for him; its splendid diapason was no tnoro to sweep grandly through his heart, urging him on to glory; wife, child, friends, comrades, (all save two or throe) franco—all wero lar away; and no more to bo known to him loiovcr.— Ho who hud commmnndcd legions was now to bo under one man's will; ho who had crossed tho Alps, traversed deserts, and marched through eter nal snows, was now "cabined, cribbed, confin- ml;" the eagle who had once soared proudly amid the stars, and confronted (ho tempest with "storm- during wing,” was now chained to a bleak rock in tho midst of tho ocean! It was most melan choly ! wondrous pitiful! Napoleon's bitterest otto- toy must pause tu his wrath when, u« ho remembers tho Napoleon of Austcrlitz, and Marengo, nnd Lodi, and Waterloo, ho thinks also of tho Napo leon of St Helena. Yet it seems a merciful pro vidence that Waterloo resulted as it did—a kind beneficence that its hero should dwoll there, for a brief space—that ho should have this short proba tion in which to tamo his vuulting ambition, nnd calm his tempestuous soul—aspaeo lor setting Ins house in order, und lor preparation for tho new fields which lie far beyond tho outposts of I'imo. How boro the hero these severe trials, this ter- nhlo humiliation, this diro calamity, this awful prostration l Did I10 fret, nnd fume, nnd chafe* weayring his spirit with vain regrets, wearying his companions with unavailing complaints, ami wear ing out life in peevish and querulous humors l Or liko Socrates did he submit himself to his fate, nnd bear up nobly under his destiny, personifying the dignity and the grandeur of misfortune I Did ho upon his rock, liko Ajax upon his, still present an undaunted front, daring the lightning to approach him and defying the gods 1 Or did ho liko a truly great man, bow, not abjectly, but with submissive grace to tho decree which had crushed him, nnd rising, deport himsull ns only mighty minds in mighty men cun—with dignity, and grace, nnd for titude, and trust? Theso are questions upon which the world has boon divided ever since it was startled by the news that Napoleon was a eiptivo nnd England his keeper; and few questions have been more warmly discussed, or led to greater bittorness of dispute thnn they. Tho statements of Las Casas nnd Moutholon, intimate friends of Napoleon, and of Drs. O'Meara und Antommnrchi, his physicians, hnvo until now been the chief sources ol informal ion from whence the world has drawn its data for making up an opinion. They nil favor Napoleon, and load ut to believe thftt his durance nt St. Hclcnn was tho crowning stone of his famo; that ho bore with he roic fortitude, persecution, annoyance, and insult such as few men undergo, gnd that Sir Hudson Lowe, his gaoler, was n petty nnd irascible tyrant, wjioso chief delight consisted in torturing his vic tim by every means in his power. Bookmakers and biographers have yielded readily to these state ments their implicit belief, and the world has now pretty well made up its mind that the treatment of Napoleon nt St. Helena, was ono of tho darkest stains upon tho nnmo of England, while Sir Hud son Lowe bus, until now, been in « pretty fair way j to go down to posterity n9 a sort ol little Nero, or Huynuii. Ills name is already hated. '1 he object ol the work whose caption wo give above, is to refute tho alleged calumnies and slan ders of O'Meara nnd oilier.*, to do justice to En glish fumo and Sir Hudson Lowe, nnd forever to set at rest tho vexed questions to which we haven- bove alluded. The material (orthe work lir.n been so vast, tlie author has condensed it into n narra tive of convenient length, containing however all the necessary facts, with the vouchers therefor.— He seems to have undertaken this responsibility with a high sense ol its magnitude, and hia work exhibits internal evidence of having been executed in a just, candid, and impaitial spirit.
