In the abscnco of any insiructiona from the Department, our Postmaator, Mr. Cohan, did not feel at liberty to change the hour for closing the mail, but he was yesterday shown a letter from the First Assistant Postmaster General to Mr. Cuylor, which satisfied him that it was the deeiro of the Department that the mails should be sent according to the schedule just adopted by tho Rail roads ; and consequently he no longer hesitated to conform to tho now arrangement, llo will proba blf receive further authority from Washington to-day or to-morrow*, for what bo has dono. Sen' brook, Joseph Wbali$r and others, for them-elves and hoirs and officers and memhera of tho Edistn Company of South Carolina, for services during tho last war with Great Britain. This Company, consisting of 64 men,besides offi cers, was composed of gentlemen ol wealth and respectability, who, as Senator Duller said, dis dained to ask any remuneration of Congress lor their services for three years, during thu war, and building a fort on the Island of Edi»to ; but some of the heirs aro now in reduced circumstances, and the wholo joined in making the request for govern* ment to pay the sum stated, being tho actual ex* penso of building the fort, which was constructed by order of CoL Bloodgood. Short Credits.— 1 Tho New York papers state that a movement lias been mado by tho wholesale jobbers of that city to roduco tho term of credit to six and eight months, tho notes given not being subject to renewal. It is urged that dealers gener ally would consult their own permanent interest by resolving on the shorter credit w ithout renew als, and those who do this business *>nly will have the advantage over thueo who give tho longer credits. A large business ol this exiended credit need not be envied. It requires a larger rato of profit on all the business transacted to uiako that par ticular kind at all mlo.
