Who would desire his mother, his aiater, or his belovod, to bear a sweeter or a bet ter name T Under tho form of Imma, it was honor ed by Charlemagne's fair daughter, whoso lovo his tory, in connection with Eginhard, her father's se cretary, forma ono ot tho prettiest episodes in tho chronicles of the time. Emmeline is simply s di- minutivo of Emma. Gertruds is from tho Gorman, and according to the etymology usually given, signifies all truth; hut Jung Stilling, in his Pneumatulogy, gives it a very different meaning. Speaking of tho Druids, ho •aya: "Into this mysterious spiritual order old women were also received; who by this means, at tained to considerable rank and bocamo priestesses. Such individuals then received tho title of Haxa— Druidess. Both these names were st that time honorablo appellations; they sro now the most dis graceful terms ol reproach. The name ul Gertrude is probably also deprived from this source, and ought reasonably to bo disused, for it has the samo meaning as the word haxa, or hexs, or witch."— Well, this may be true; for Gorirudes are generally very bewitching. Helen—Latin, Helena ; French, Ilolenc—is of Greek origin. The true signification of it seems to be ono of those vexed questions which abound in etymological discussions. According to one, it has the meaniog of alluring; snoibor makes it signify a taker, or one who seizes ; whilo a third defines it one who pitioi. Many a poor unfortunate lover has found Helen alluring; and has finally boon taken, seized, conquered, by the prestige of her bright eyes and sweet voice. Happy is he who finds her ono who pities, for pity is ok in to love.— Ellen is only a different form of the same namo. It is often contracted to Nellie and Nell, and is a hno name in all its forms. Isabel—French, Isabelle ; Spanish, Isabella— signifies olive complexmned.or brown. There is a silvery, bell-like music in the name, whico is ex ceedingly attractive, and which has msde it favor- ito with poets. Mabel is probably from Ma Bello,my fair, though somo think Its contraction ol Amabellis—lovely or amiable. Tho lair ones who bear it havo no reason to complain of either derivation. Margaret—A pearl—is from the Latin Mar garita. Another, and, if potsiblo. more beautiful signification, has, curiously enough, attached itself to this namo. Tho German word magd, a maid, anciently written Magcto and Msghat, w hich word* were easily confused with Madgo and Magio, and thus with Margaret. Daisies were also called maghets, maids, or margaruts, whence we have the French marguerites, daisies. Margaret, then, may be a pearl or daisy, aa she chooseth ; or she may, if she will, cotnbirto the beauty and purity of both in her liio and character, and thus prove hor- self worthy of her doubly significant name. But maidens are sometimes more than pearls or daisies, and well may tho poet ask : “ Where may the brightest flower be met, * That can match with Margaret ?" Maby.—This sweetest of all female names is from the Hebrew, and has tho meaning of exalted —a truly appropriate signification. It is a famous name, both in sacred and profane history. In all ages it has literally been exalted. From Mary the mother af Jesus, to Mary the mothor of Washing ton, the glory has not departed from the namo. In the French, Mary becomes Marie.—Knickerbocker Magazine. An Unlucky Present. It is related in the " Ingoldshy Legends" that an old gentlemen,! merchant in Bush Lane, Loudon, bad an only daughter, possessed of tho highest at- tractions, moral, personal, and pecuniary. Sho was engaged and devotedly attached to a young man in her own rank of life, and in every respect well worthy of hor choice. All preliminaries wore arranged, and the marriage, after two or three postponements, was filed, " positively for tho last time of marrying," to take place on Thursday, April 16th. 13—. (Ju the preceding Monday, the bridegroom elect (wtio was to have received jL’10,000 down on his wedding day,) and a further sum of jG9Q,000 on his father-in-law's dying—as there w«s hope ho soon would—had a little jealous squabbling with hia in tended at an e.. .4 party, the " till " roso in con sequence of It• )ing more attention than the thought justifiable to s young lady with sparkling eyes and inirnitablo ringlets. The gentleman re torted, and spoke slightingly of s certain cousin, whose waistcoat wm the admiration of the assem bly. and which, it waa hinted darkly, had been embroidered by tho fair hand ol the heiress in ques tion. He added, in conclusion, that it would bo lime enough lor him to bo schooled when they were married ; that—reader, pardon the unavoida ble question!—sho waa " putting on tho brooches s little too soon!" Alter supper, both the lovers had become more cool; iced champaign and cold chicken had dons their work, and leave was taken by the bridogroom tn pane, in kindly and affectionate, if not in auch enthusiastic terms as had previously terminated their meetings. On Ibe next morning, tho swain thought, with some remorse, on tho angry feeling he had exhibit ed, and the cutting sarcasm with which he had given it vent; and as s part of tho nnunde honara• tU, packed up with great care a magnificent satin drees, which he had previously bespokon for his beloved, and which had been sent home to tutu in the interval, and transmitted it pi tho lady with a note to the following effect: " Dxabest ——— . I have been unable to close rny eyes all night, in conscquenro of «ur foolish rrnsoodcritandmg last evening.
