New Orleans)!* Dakuer or an Overflow.— Fears are entertained in New Otloans, that when the spring rains begin to descend, tho immenso quantity o! snow which hu fallen on tho upper Mississippi and Ita numberless tributaries, shall havo melted, the city will bo in dangorot an over flow. It was somo five or six years ago, we be lieve, that the levoe which protects the city, gave way, andalargo portion of the town waa inundated. The damage to property was immense, and tho re- oollection of H now makes the inhabitants appre hensive lest tboy should bo overtaken by a similar disaster. 1ST Wo were in error in stating yesterday that young master Kelly, who was run over, on Thurs day, during the squadron exercises, had died of tho injuries he received. We regret to add, that his situation last evening waa very critical, and that but little hopo was entertained of his recovery. Wacoh's Great Panorama or Italy.—Wo have no desire to say more iu favor of this great work than its real excellence deserves, but having b.»eo much gratified ourselves, we with to commend it to tho lovers or tho beautiful as a work of art which merits their attention. There will be an exhibition, at 3 o'clock, when colored persons and children, who cannot attend at night, may nuko a pleasant tour through Italy, with none of tho uiu il annoyances of a journey, and at a very trifling ex pense. Harnden’s Express.—Wo would direct the at tention oi the reader to (he advertisement in this morning’s paper, of I farnden's Kxpresa. Having . had occasion more than once to employ its services, we can recommend it J-.<r the safety, disputch, and promptness with which it transacts its business*.— Mr. J. Do.Msrtin, the ngect here, is too well known in Savannah to require any indorsement at our hands. We will only add for the information of persons at a distance, wh<» may desire to employ the Express, that they will find him s reliable and •aterprisiog business man, always at his post and raady to serve the public upon the most reasonable terms. Miens or the Consular Seal.—It appears from statement! made by the Washington Star, that the circulation over the continent by Mr.Gcorgo Saun ders of revolutionary documents, under the portal seal of the United States Legation at London, has been complained of by the French Government, and an examination in regard to it made by Mr. Bnchanan. Mr. Sickles and the United States despatch agent, in written communications to the Minister, declared that the only privilege in con nection with the despatch bags of the Legation sc corded to Mr. Saunders, was whilo he was United Buies Consol at London, to allow him to send to the Sute Department in this city his official com munications. Nothing waa discovered, going in any manner to fix on Mr. Saunders the imputation of being bimself privy to surreptitious use of tho Legation's seal. The Star thinks that the seal waa forged by the young Europe party—Ko»utb, Mazzini, Ledru Roliin &. Co.—“who consider any oooceirabie means to carry tbeir ends, justifiable, as against tbeir antagooiats.” New Church Edifice. It will be remembered that tho congregation of the rust Presbyterian Church, in this city, determin ed some time ago to provide themselves with a new Church edifice. A lot on the eastern side of Mon terey square, opposite Pulaski Monument, has been selected for the site, and we were yesterday shown drawings of the building, prepared by Mr. John 8- Norris, the architect and superintendent. If we msy judge from tbeso drawings, it promises to be one of the most beautiful edifices in the city, sod admirably adapted for purposes of worship. The main edifice is to be 87 feet long by GO fee ( wide. A tower will be placed in the centre oi the front, which will be 24 feet square, and project 13 feet from ibe front lino. Connected with tho rear of the main building is a Session House or Sunday school room, extending 41 feet in length by 54 feel in width, miking ths extreme length of the Church U3fe*t. The height of the tower is to be 87 feet, surmount- . ed by an octagonal spire 62 foet high, the tower and sp re reaching an altitude of 149 feet. ’Hie height of the main rdifico from the ground to the top of battlements, will be 40 feet, and to the ridge of the roof, 47 feet. The height of tho Session House lo top of parapet, will be 28 feet, and to ridge of roof 35 feet. Th* arehiuclual character of the building will b» whst is known as the " Perpendicular Pointed Gothic Style, of the third or latest period." But wo need not say more ot the arehltectura) arrangements of tho building, nnleea it bo to add that tha entire plan reflects much credit upon Mr, Norrie, who, wo understand, is about to tako up his permanent residence here. Tho architect informs us, that tbo work will bo commoncod forthwith* And proaeod forward with all noedful dUhatch.— When completed, the congregation may congratu late themselves upon having an ologant and appro priate placo of worship—a temple adapted alike to their own wants, and the high and solemn purpoeos for whioh it is designed. A CitKAFLY Governed State.—In publishing the annual reports of tho Treasurer and Auditor of Massachusetts for tho put year, the Boston Adver tiser says: Tho wholo aggrogato of ordinary oxponsea for tho year waa but $990,975, or about one million dollar*. There is very Httlo ot interest in piny politic* now-*.days, in our Stalo legislature there has been aotne sparring, during tho past woek, heiween Senators Dickinson (Sovvarditut and Urooks (Na tional Whig) all 'about Know-Nothingism and Sowurdism. The tatter got tho boat of the argu ment decidedly. Ho is in town at presunt, but leaves for Albany tu-niorrow, when tho fight will bo renewed. Tho canvas* for the approaching election in Now Hampshire waxes warm, and botii parties, Democrats and Know Nothings—lor the contest will bo substantially between them— are entertaining very confident expectations of success. There aro indication* of a split among the Know- Nothings—one wing clinging to national principles, while the other is in favor ol tne Free Seiler* and Abolitionists. Thus, you sec, that slavery is the rock on which all political craft is certain lo founder. Gen’l Houston’s visit to tho city at tho present tima creates a lively interest, and all of those who have not seen " Sam ’’ will doubtless embrace this opportunity oi doing so. It was supposed by somo that tho criticiim on tho "Doestick s" literature, which appeared in tho Courier &. Enquirer a low days since, would ef fectually stiflo the fire of that gentleman's genius. But the opinion of tho Counor critic seems to havo inspired "Doeaticka" with additional ambition and activity, for ho is going it stronger than over ; and threatens more frequent infiictiuus cl a similar character, unleas a veto power is interposed. It is difficult to perceive wherein consiiu the rnurit of this strangely named author. He perpetrates an abundance of nonsense, which is not redeemed by any novelty and wit, nor oven humor. Whatever capacity "Doeaticka" haafor any lino of authorship, ho is throwing away upon these essays, winch, owing to the republicatiun of them in iho news papers, he must imagine aro equal to Thackeray or Dickens. The nowrpapers of this country are the grand vehicles, upon which many modern writers of merit ride up to the poitalsof fame, in their columns the public tasto, temper and judgment are tried, and when they havo secured for tho writer a (avoraolo introduction, this preliminary incubation results in a full grown book, freighted with tho hope* of tho aspirant for literary honors. That " Doesticka" has not taken his flight flora Lie stand upon tbo newspaper column into tho world ot bonks, buoyed up by what newspapers havo dono for him, is assuredly much to his credit. A singlo article might be read with patience, whore tho aggregated nonsense would disgust good taste. Ho haa made some good hits at prevailing follies, but Ins good things aro served up in a mass of tbo most puorilo and extravagant inanity. Tho tasto of all persons tnuat be consulted by s newspaper, so far as that taste may bo consistent with morals and good order, but ii editors would have thou own way, " Doeaticka" and all bis kindred would bo oilher very materially pruned and cut down, or clue total ly eviscerated and consigned to the region oi wasi" paper and rejected manuscripts.
