election of two boards for tho management ol tho
Washington Monument Association Both claim
to havo been legally elected. The case will go
before the U. S. Circuit Court.
The Senato urn engaged upon the Naval reform
bill, when tho decuasion was suspended for the pur
pose of receiving Gen. Jackson’s sword. Gen
Casa was deputed to present it to Congress, and in
doing ao, ho atludod in appropriate terms to the life
and services of tho old hero. Tho amondmonts of
tho House to the Naval bill wero then concurred
in; after which the Post office bill was taken up.
Tho Houso has rejected the bill granting lands
in Florida tor Railroad purposes.

An adjourned meeting of the atockholdera in this
Road waa held at Calhoun*# Milts* in Ahboritte
District, (8. C.) on the 82nd Inst. The only busl-
neaa of intereel traaeacted waa die election of a
Board of Directors, and the unanimous adoption of
a resolution, accepting the aubecriplion of $500,000
by Augoata, on the terms proposed by the City
Council Tho following are the terms agreed up
on, as we learn from the Augoata Constitutionalist.
1st. That tho Savannah River Valley Railroad
is not to be tapped by or cunuected with the South
Carolinadtailroad. ,
2nd. That Five Hundred Thousand Dollars
subscribed by the city of Augusta, should be suf
ficient to complete the Road, and pul It in run
ning order without further calls on the city ol
Augusta.
Sd. That said tivo hundred thousand dollars ia
to be furniahod and used in itutallmenta, as the
work progress'*, and as proportionate subscrip
tions are called tor and ei|>endod.
4th. That the Company shall build and keep up
a substantial and perpetual free bridge aorose the
river si Augusta—eaid bridge to be laid with iron
rails for tho transportation of freight In cam by
horse power.
6th. That Augusta and Hamburg shall he on
the same looting as to the mtoe of freight and pas*
eengem over the road, and no preference in arrival
or departure shall be given in connection with
cither place.
Cth. That the road ahall be commenced at Ham
burg, and so soon as twenty milca are completed
the bridge ia to be built.

from Hamburg upou trestle work, to pruvetil darn
ing the river.

In 8mate.—'The new postal bill, providing for
tho transmission of letters throe thousand milt*
and leas, at throe cents, over three thousand miles,
five cento, was passed.
The bill for the relief of owners of swamp lands
has also passed, but tho voto will probably bo ro-
considered.
The mail steamer bill waa next brought up for
consideration, whereupon it was moved that the
Government give notico to terminate the Collins'
contract. Tho matter is sttll under discussion.
In the House.—Tho amendments to the navy-
appropriation bill were agreed to, and the bill duly
passed, as went also tho fortification bill, the Cal
ifornia court bill, tho bill authorizing tho construc
tion of four new reuenue cutters, also tho navy ap
propriations. The appropriation for tno improve
ment of the navigation of tho Savannah river was
nogatived. Tho bounty land bill for the benefit of
revolutionary' pensioners, was p<*tp-Hied until to
morrow. Tno Benato amendments to tho Indian
appropriation bill aro now under consideration in
committee of tho wholo.
The Senate have lud tho matter of tho Collins'
steamer under consideration for eight hour*, hut
adjourned without action.
At an evening session of the House, Gen- Ruffin
■poke against the Know-Nothings. Tho House is
still in soesion.
Senator Benton’s house w as destroyed by fire this
afternoon. His furniture was saved. The houses
on each side are now on fire, one of which it the
residence of Rev. Mr. McLain, secretary of the
American Colonization Society.
In the municipal election, yesturday, tho Know-
N’othing,tickct for Mayor and Counctlmen triumph
ed by a large majority.
