General, according to that veraoioua print, haa tho
meat unquestionable proof in his possession, that

from various points in tho United Stntoa.
On the 18th, the Captain General, accompanied
by hia adjutants and a numoor of distinguished per
sons, ntado an excursion into tho country os fsr as
Guanajay, for the purposo of reviewing and en
couraging tho voiuntoor forco* in that direction —
Ho was everywhere received with the most un
bounded enthusiasm ; whereupon the aforesaid Di

gratulates the loyal people ol Cuba and tho rest of
mankind, upon iho great firmness, foresight and
watchful patriotism of his Highness.

In Cardenav tho utmost tranquility prevailed.—
The enthusiasm <*f enlisling voluutecr# had not
diminished, and it was believed that every man In
Cardenas who could boar arms, would w*on have
enlisted. The volunteers were waiting impatient
ly lor the arm* with which they were to drive
back the invaders. Regular sentries wero posted
along tho wharves, and at other exposed points.—
Arms for the volunteers wero dailycxpected from
Havana.
The chief officer of tho town of Sibanllla atates,
that sections of infantry and cavalry havo been
formed there, and that arm* havo boon sent thorn
from Havana. Ha lurthor says, that rnuro than
two-lhirda of those ordered to take up arms, havo
already onrollcd themselves. Tho crowa of tho

This force, with the brilliant company of Mattie-

On Sunday, tho 20th, the captains of tho volun
teer battalion, ut Malatizas. Were buaily engaged
in organizing their respective companies, whose
arma Itad been changed for now muskets sent Irom
Havana. Every body had mounted a royal cock-
ado, and civilians everywhere were carrying arms
ami cartridge boxes. A Almanzas paper thinks it
is not strange, that the whole community, boing
thus engaged, should have forgotten that it was
Carnival Sunday. The garrison had been rein
forced by fresh troops from other parts nl tho
Island.
Thu Diana publishes without comment the cor
respondence between Secretary Marcy and Colonel
Kinney, in regard to tho proposed ex|*odition uf the
latter to Central America
It is proper to add, that tho foregoing inteffi-
geiico it gleaned from Cuban papers, and should,
therefore, bo received with some allowance. It j
wilt out fail to strike the reader as singular, that
such extensive military preparations should con
tinue be made, if the resident population of iho
Island is as tranquil and loyal as the Dun in would
have us believe- We are told in one breath that
order reigna everywhere, and in the next that the
people and military authorities at Almanzas wero
so much absoibed on Sunday tho *20th, that they
entiivly forgot it was Carnival Sunday! Turn
such a day ahould be forgotten in a Catholic coun
try, is pruuf that iho public mind was anything else
hut tranquil, '(‘ho truth is, we suspoet, that the
Captain General is seeking to impress the people
with the idea that the Island is threatened with an
invasion, or, which is in. re probable, that lie has
discovered a deep-scaled revolutionary sentiment
among tho inhabitants, and is putting himself in
position to crush it.

Up to within three or four years, the Irish immi
