Fisk—At about hall-past W o'clock, last night,
the alarm of tire was sounded trom tho Exchange,
caused by tho sudden appearance of tlamc* in tho
vicinity of the comer ot Liberty and Whitaker
streets. The fire proved to bo in the stable of Mr.
Wm. B. Giles, on the lane between Liberty mid
Harris streets, east of Whitaker.
Th* building was of wood, and containing high*
ly combustiblo material, w as soon destroyed. Tho
firemen wore promptly on tho ground, and their
well directed efforts prevented tho spread of tho
fiime* to the surrounding dwelling*, which other*
wise must havo been destroyed, causing a most
sorioua loas of property. Tho value ol tho Water
Works was also most strikingly illustrated in lur*
rushing a ready and plentiful supply ol water.
The fire was discovered in tho hay, in the second

of an incendiary. Properly insurod in the South

Arraxmo Incsndiarish.—At an early hour
yesterday morning, a white nun was discovered
in the act of setting fire to a wooden building, in
East Broad street, situated in uno of the most com
bustible neighborhoods in tho city,—nearly all the
buildings thereabouts being composed ot wood —
The man waa discovered under the house with

work of destruction. IIo was promptly arrested,
and duly arraigned before his Honor the Mayor,
who committed him for furUicr examination. We
