“ SAVANNAH, GA.
Friday Morning, April 6.
bTtelegraph for the republican.
* 1ST tS Hon. FtonoUGrangcr, ox-Boeimastor
General, hae'arrived in Savannah and taken rooms
•t too l’ulaski House.
_«sr Thoro were 403 deaths in Now York Isst
■tar Tho Georgia University .Magazine, for
April* has boon rocolvod. It is an unusually in
teresting numbor, containing (ho annual annivor*
■ary addresses before tho two Lilorary Societies of
the College, tho Phi Kappa and Domosthoninn.
Sraixo Best ness of Savannah.—'Tho wharves
■to now lined with vessels of all classes, busily on*
gaged in taking in and discharging their oargooo.
Everything under tho UluiT has a brisk and ani*
mated appoarance. Drays can bo soon moving in
every direction, piled with goods, tho marks of
whioh indicato thoir destinations, some in Tonnes-
soo and Alabama, and others again for all parts of
this Stalo and Florida.
Bequest to Savannau.—It gives us pleasure to
state that tho late Colonel William Robertson, of
this city, bequeathed tho sum of $5,000 to tho
Mayor and Aldermon, for tho use of tho Fire
Savannah and New York Steamship Link.—
It will bo soon by roloronce to our advertising col
umns, that tho steamships belonging to the New
York and Savannah Steam Navigation Company
haro again roeuuiod thoir regular semi-weekly
trips between this port and Now York—tho Ala
bama having boon laid up for aomo time, receiving
now and tnoro extensive boilers. With such ox-
ccllont and seaworthy vessels, making their trips
in Irottt fifty to sixty hours, and nt such a reduced
faro ($20 to Now York) thoy ought, and will, wo
think, rocoivo a liboral aujlbort iron* tho traveling
public.
Sketches of a Storm at Sea.—Wo published a
fow days ainco tho account of iho rescuo from ilio
wreck of tho crow of tho brig Hcnica, from Jack
sonville for Boston, by the ship Jolm Si Albert, at
this port, from Liverpool. Capt Jones of tho B-,
yesterday left with us threo sketches, representing
tho position of tho brig when first seen; just before
she capsized; and aitor she • lay on tho sea a help
less wreck. Tho last shows tho ship, and tho crow
in tho act of diawing up iho men from the boat o!
tho Benica, ono at a time* by a ropu. They wore
undo by Mr. C. Robinson, second mate of tho ship
and exhibit much artistic skill. They may bo seen
to-day on tho table in our raiding room. The
rescue of all tho crew of tho brig, under ihc circum*
ces, seems almost a miracle.
tsr The Br. hark iiolon, from this |*ort (or
Liverpool, was fallou in with on tho 4th of March
in lat. 40 N. long. 20 \V., with loss of rudder,
■trained and loaky, and tho crew taken oft and
carried to Liverpool by a vcssol which arrived
there on tho 12th of March. Tho II. cleared at
this port-for Liverpool on tho 26th of December
last, with tho following cargo: 1,081 bales upland
cotton, 215,585 feet pitch pino timber, and 5,000
oak staves.
What For I—Wo loam that sovcnl men have*
beon for some time aasidoously engaged in digging
up portions of tho earth on Tybco Island. They
have a long instrument, Uko a ram-rod, with which
they probo tho earth, and when they strike any
thing dig down to it. Thoy somo days sinco found
a box containing horsemen's pistols, Ac , and more
recently havo discovered somo china and other
articles, which wero doubtless stolon from wrecks
atid buried.
"The Georgia Prohibitionist,” is iho title of a
Mur Wookly Campaign paper,to bo published in
Marietta, tho first number of which will bo issued
about the 30th inst.; B. J. Camp and S. A. Calder,
Editors and Publishers.
Swindling Clergymen.—Attempt* havo been
made, in Now York, to awindlo clergymen by ob
taining money from them for a book which is re
presented to contain notices of aormons delivered
by them.
Theabip Great Republic, which cleared at Now
York on tho 22nd of February, arrived at Grare®-
end in nineteen days.
Italy.—It is reported that a serious revolutiona
ry movement, lioadc-d by Mazziiii, had been dis
covered in Homo. Both the French and Austrian
Iroopa wore held in readiness to suppress it.

of too finest selection* In aaored ntuaio, and
too wholo was executed in a manner that would
havo mfioctcd credit upon tltooo of much higher
pretension* to mnxlcal aolenco. Tho audlenoo waa
porhapa ono of tho largest over aeon within tits
walls of Iho apacioua Church, made up of mum*
bora from all tho various Christian denominations
of tho city, with a highly roapootablo numbor ol
ladloa and gemtemon not specially Identified with
any Christian body. Wo belluvo thoro wero not Ion
than s thousand persona present.
Commencing with tho openlug chorus t " Glori
ous ia Thy Name," tho audionoo waa uvidontly
taken by eurprlso—notwithstanding thoy aiitioi-
paled a musical treat of no ordinary character, yet,
from tho almost broathloss silonco that porvadod
the house, it was evident tho reality exceeded nil
previous anticipation. Upon tho conclusion of
tho duett: •* Graceful Consort," expressions of ap-
plauso wero manifested; and upon tho conclusion
uf tho chorus: "Como Geiitlo Spring " tho delight
of almost the ontiro nudiuuoo sought relief in
rounds of unmistakable npplnuao, whoroupon it was
announcod from tho desk, by Rov. Mr. Cremloy,
that in tho house oi God, at a Sacred Concort,
such audible manifestations wore not acceptable
to tho choir, and it waa hoped would not bo ropoat-
cd. Notwithstanding this intimation, upon the
conclusion of various othor pieces, among which
wo will only mention: Solo—"With Vorduto
Clad 5" Solo, with chorus--" Et Incarnnlus;" Trio
—"On Theo Each Living Soul Awaits}" Solo
with chorus—" lnfiammnius," tho audionco could
scarcely control their delight, ovidonily joining in
tho invocation of the Sacred Psalmist, wherein, in
tho rapturo of hii soul, ho desirod the Honda to
clap thoir hands, and tho hills to bo joyful togeth
er before tho Lord.
As a wholo, the Concort roilocta tho highest cro-
dlt upon all concerned, in its inception and per
formance, and upon tho liberality and musical taate
of our citizona ; ana cannot pruvo otoorwiao than
gratifying, in a pccuninry point of Viow, to iho

puties to tho Cortoa. Caro should bo tnlicn not to

Bucli n measure would iuovltnhly throw thu island
into tho urm* of thu United Status.
"To declare tho slnve trade piracy would also bo
