McNinrAL Election in Acqusta.—'There was an election yeatsrdsy in Auhvmm, and we leant Lira and Death in London.— 1 Tho number of births in London, for tho week ending March 3, was 1720, ol these, 038 were boys, nnd 888 girls.— Tho average numbers for tbo proceeding ton years, in tho ninth week of tho year, wero 791 boys and 759 girls. The number of deaths registered with in the same timo was 1,560, exceeding the calcula ted number for tho week by no less ihnn 884 ; in dicating cloarly, that, though Iho rigorous wuathur had passed away, its c fleet# still continued to bo i fell. Sidon is thirty miles south from Beirut, und contains a population of about ten thousand pbrsons. In the winter ol 1853-4, some Mussolinon who wero digging for treasures in tho old grnvo yards of tho city, un covered throo copper pots, each containing eight hundred pieces of gold. Tho letters are in porlect preservation, and can ho read with tho utmoal ease and accura cy, and the ivholo forms by far tho longest and moat perfect inscription yet discovered in this most ancient language and character., it appears to bo mainly a genealogical history of tho person hurid in the sarcophagus, who, it appears, wan a King of 8idoii. Tho names ol Baal ami Aslitor- odi, die woll-knowu Gods of tho Sidon inns, occur repeatedly iii ilioao inscriptions. Some of die words aro Hebrew, as melelc, king; while tho forms of some letters are so much like lliosu ol die ancient Greek as at unco to indicate the relation ship.
