The following naw publications hava baen placed
upon our table by Col. William*:
Men or Character: by Douglas Jorrold. Naw
Yolk i Bunco & Brother, publishers.
Douglas Jortold'a keoit satire, shrewd observa
tion, piquancy and humor are unapproaoliabto, and
In nothing from’his pen have those character
istics been more furoibiy displayed than in the
akelchy stories which compose this volume. They
are redundant with comic situations and amusing
advoLturos, and are roplete with that humor which
Rave to wide a populatity to the "Caudle Lecture*."
The bddeal and moat laughter-provoking charac
ters are grouped together. Flights and prodie**
menu,inexpressibly funny, continually occur,and
the reader infrequently betrayed into ipontaneoua
explosions of Uughtei. They are not only mirth'
ful, but sharp, keen, sarcastic, possessing a co'
vert philosophy, snd hot unlrequently making
use oi the jester s liconao to start auggeativo truths.
Tricolored Sketches or Paris, durum the years
1851-9-3. New Yolk : Harper & Brothers.
This interesting volumo cumprisoa a aeries of
letters written by an American sojourner in Paris,
to ono of tha New York journals, and embracos
that important period of French history which wit
nessed the gradual riao and final installation of
Louis Napoleon. France haa made her language
tho court language of Europe ; aho lias made her
literature almost vermicular among other great and
civilised nations around her; in scicnco she leads
tho world; in many arts she equals till oilier*; and
in those especially which refine and embellish life,
aho ia everywhere ihe acknowledged law giver-
While admitting the versatility nnd levity of her
people, wo eannot overlook their cheerfulness,
their tendency to amiable eutialbUillea, their apti
tude for putting tho best lace upon all things,.their
temperance, their industry, thvir amazing frugality,
their forecast snd sell control in the administration
of their private affairs. Whatever, thoieloro*
makes us hotter acquainted with Paris, the social
and political contre of auch a people, as the volumo
belore ua does, cannot bo devoid of inleroal or fail
to benefit ihe reader.
Mammon, or the Hardships of an Hoireas. By Mra.
Gore. New York: Bunco &. Brother.
Thia is the latest production from tho pon of
Mra. Goro, and many of the English pros* accord
it tho high praiso ol being the bast. The London
AthetiKum say*: "The idea intended to l>« work

money. The author shows how it cats out all ge

very power to enjoy the much beloved riches, eveu
when they fall ill gulden showers without stint or
limitation."
Col. Williams haa also laid on our tahlo "Trie
Country Neighborhood,” by .Miss E. A. Dupeny,
it being No. 197 of Harper's library of select no
vels, together with "Foster's First Principles of
Chemistry," adapted specialty lot clashes. It ts a
strictly elementary work, and is from the press of

Coal for Poultry.
Messrs Editors:
During tho provalence of the “Shanghai fever”
throughout ihe country for some years past, 1

ner of raising and treating tho Shanghai and other
■pieces of poultry, but do not remember to have
noticed any recommendation of tho uaeordurcoa!
aa a valuable ingredient in lood, both for health-
fulness, arid for fattening them.
Various modes have been adopted for fattening
poultry tor the (able wlih respect both to economy
and expedition. In many parts in Europe, bree
der* of poultry for market, prepare condiments or
feed their stock with fermenting food, or mixtures
ofSaccharine, matter to stimulate the fattening
process. In France, a more systematic mode ia
adopted, and barrels are arranged in which lowls
•re kept in "solitary confinement," (in darkness
at that) nnd at stated intervals are regularly ‘‘swil
led'' through a funnel, with a broth mode ot sweet
milk and barley, or wheat; and in this country,
various plans have been adopted for feeding poul
try, witn a view of obtaining "flavor and fatness ”
economically and expediiiuunly I have tried
many ol the ordinary expedients of tho "country,”
but havo never known anything equal to ‘coal,"
bo’h to secure period health and rapid growth in
fatness h a!»u gives to the moat a rich aud do!;—
cato flavor.
My attention waa first called to this fact by
noticing the rapid improvement of poultry brought
me from the country. Ordinarily, they are takeu
i from tbo yard and brought tn, without bomg pre
viously cooped, and although regularly fed, and
having tho range ol thu barn and stable yards, and
adjacent fields, they were generally “too poor” for
immediate uso Tnoy were, therefore, put in

anything further than their safe-keeping Tho
