It will be seen, that tho Athenaeum will be re* oponed thi# evening by Mr. Criap and his popular dramatic corpe, strengthened by several new and important additions. The pieces selected for the •veatng'B entertainment are of a popular and amus ing character, being tbo inimitable comedy of "Married Life" and the laughable farce ol "Raising the Wind." Returning to Savannah after a successful engage* ment elsewhere, we trust the manager's friends at home will accord to him, at least, at generous a support as that which he has received at the hands of strangers. Having ronWed the Athenmum, as it were, and striven to establish the Drama here upon a respectable mid permanent footing, it is tho doty of the public to do their part, and to cooperate with him to the extent necessary to render ins el* forts fully eocceeaiul. We have always considered a well regulated Theatre a benifieent institution. If it did no other good, (be fact that i; in many instances wins, if only for so hour, the young Irom the haunts of vice and dissipation, and renders them familiar with tho noblo virtues and patriotic sentiment* which il- lumine the pages of our best dramatic authors, ought of itself to coijinicud such establishments to public favor. And if mon and women of tho first social position, and of tho best intellects, would frequent such placet and thus raise tho character of the performers and the performances, and restote the Drama to it* ancient respectability, they might soon purge tho stage of whatever was improper, and render it, next to tbo I'ulpit, tho Press, and tho Bchool-room, one of tho most efficient intrumon* Uiitice for tbo improvement and elevation of the muses. Such it was in tho beat days of Athens, when Euripides and Sophocles, those master spirits of the Drama, spoke to tho rnultitudo from tho forum of tho stago; and such it may bo made again. Tho Theatre is not so proper a placo to visit as tho Church, but it is far bettor and safer than iho bar-room, the gambler's den, and the many other place# of Iniquity and death, with which all cities more or Ires abound. And if it is out all wr would like to hsvo it, let us endeavor to tnako it such ; and If wc fall, then let us eh*vato it as high as possible, if for no othor reason than that it is more harmless than other resorts and pastimes which unfortunately po*s.;aa greater attractions for the vicious and thoughtless. It is for such reasons u those that we have here tofore endeavored to sustain Mr Criap m tho ef forts which he and his friends have made ; and it is for the same reasons, that we would again invoke tho co-operation of the public. I.atsai from Tybre. We are glad to learn that tho Ur. barka Glas- gets and Clermont, announced by ua as having gono ashore near tho mouth of the river in the gale of Saturday morning Iasi, have been got off without damage, and will proceed on their voyage. • r/Pho ahip Southport still continues ashore, and tbs probability is, that it will be found necessary to abandon her. We learn from tho captain thi^ he cam# lo over the bar Friday evening, at twi light, and came to anchor, the weather, at the- time being fine; that the gale suddenly sprung up during the night, and that the ship dragged her anchofli sod went ashore at 7 o'clock Saturday morning. The writer goes on to slate that lire Democrats have evidently chosen ire tlreir favorite candidate lor the Presidency ire other than tire tillibusiero,Gen. J. A. Quitman. "We have believed," says the writer, "that this porsonago aspired to tho lira\ position in the mi lieu, and also, this ambition was what induced him to become Chief uf tire lillihusturiug expedi tions, holieving that ho would thua become popu lar with classes most powerful nt tire elections in that country, whore lists and slung alrets are tire must eloquent arguments employed." Tho JVensii states that tho commerce of Ha vana and of tire entiro island has miflinrcd much during the two past months.of February uml March, in consequenco of tho condition of tilings in which tho island was placed, but tliut American commerce lias also suflurcd.snd thnt it i* ns much tho interest of tho American as of thu Cuban mer chant to put an end to the confusion arising from reports of invsdiug expeditions. Another New Yore Presidential Candidate — Com. Vanderbilt, of New York, has addressed a letter to soveral members of tho New Jersey legis lature, who arc desirous to bring him permanently before tho country for tho Presidency. The object ol tho letter nppears to bo to "define hi* position," nnd he proceeds to say ho is agnin«t extravagance and corruption ; in favor of applying lire surplus revenue to iho liquidation of the national debt and the cunstructiunota navy somewhat commensurate wi^> an existing and prospective commerco.
