The lecture beforo tho Uiatoric*\ Society iatV
evening, by Stuart Elliott, was « very creditable
performance, evincing much research and thought,
and drew together one of the most intelligent au
diences wo have seen assembled in Aimury Hall
this season. We had supposed that tho taste of
the lecturer preferred to revel in the pleasanter and
more enticing walks of lighter literature, and that
the hard, sober facts and figures in which hietorv
and philosophy aro wont to deal, possessed but
few attractions for him. In thia wo wero mistaken,
however, os wae amply demonstrated by his essay
last night. Hi« subject, as heroioforo stated, was
“Los! and Unwritten History,”—a subject which
presents a wide field, in Ins rambles, through
which it it impossible tor us, at the late hour at
which wu write, to follow him It it lutlicicnt to
say, the audience manifested its gratification in
frequent applause, and to all appearance was
highly pleased with the performance.

1 will show that this idea la based upon false
premises, and neglect of the cuneCquencee which
follow Immediately alter a shower whether natural
or artificial. Everybody must havo obeorved the
sudden cooling caused by a shower of rain suffi
cients wet tho surface of the ground completely,
but this cooling may possibly be attributed to some
unexplained atmospheric change; now the ox-
phmetjon follow* rigidly from the following ex-
perlmrfbt:
This evening at six o'clock Fahrenheit’s ther
mometer stood at ninety degree* and nine tenths; a
precisely similar instrument having its bulb cover
ed with fine muslin and being dipped into water of
the tamo temperature as that of tho air, lit four
minutes after being taken our, full to seventy de
grees and ■even tenths, a reduction of twenty de
grees aud two tenths, which indicates a force ol
aqueous vapor equal to twelve tnlllimotera and two
tenth*, or almost halt an inch of mercury (tho
Barometer standing near thirty inchos,) and a re
lative humidity of thirty two per cent of saturation;
that Is,a cubic foot of tho air contained in solution
five grains and fifteen hundredths of water, which
is a little inoro than fivu drops, whereas at the
temperature of 90.9, n cubic toot of air will take up
sixteen grains mid nine hundredths of water huforo
tho drying process will ccaio. Therefore if the
whole surface of the city wuro sprinkled with one
hundredth of an inch in depth of wator, tho intol
erable boat of ninety degrees at sunset would lie
reduced nearly down to seveuty, and tho parching
aridity ot the air would ho greatly mitigated in
these circumstances; moreover, the surface «>ftbe
ground lining cooled lothat amount, wnu!d put a stop
to the generation of mulnrin which is produced in
tho ground ncarthe surface whenever itatemperature
is raised to seventy six degrees, and laying the
dust would, alone, bo a rohel to the lungs by no
means insignificant, tho finert dust being com
posed of the most filthy part «>| tho eurfaco.
It has boon said tfi-nt when the street is wetted
from thu hydrants, a very olletmivo odour is pro
duced, and that therefore it must bo nn unhealthy
process; but a shower oi ram although as pure aa
distilled water,uomingsuddenly upon tho heated
dust witl ciiuau it to smell very disagreeably, aud
nothing is added by tho hydrant water but a quan
tity ol catburrcttca hydrogen which is tho conse
quence of tho water being permitted to remain in
tho iron pipes too |«>ng without motion, forming
an ochre by decomposition of water, and oxidation
of iron aud the minute amount of vegetable matter
which remains.in iho water slier settling. Tin* com
pound gas gives tho odour peculiar to fresh water
swamps ** *
It is true that wator standing in pools in tho
streets or lots lor three or four day* without renew
al, when the weather is very not, will do great
mischief, but this n caused by tho rapid growth and \
destruction of conlervm and other microsoupio
vegetation, and perhaps amm ilculr, and not by
the humidity arriving fr.'tn those pools. A very dry
air i« more intolerable to the feeling and injuri
ous to tho health than that which contains more
than half the amount of moisture it is capahlo oi
containing, especially iltha force of vapor ho at
the same time nhove n medium
