Mortality w New York —There were 479 deaths in New York last week. The Mitrk and the Press.— 1 Tho controversy between Erastus Brooks, Editor and Sma.or, and John Hughes, Roman Catholic Archbishop, waxes warm. The editor and senator has the brat of tho argument; but the hierarch beats him hollow in bitterness and vitupuratmn. Ono of tho charges of Mr. Brooks was, that the archbishop owned a large amount of real estate in tho city of New York, transferred to him by Church trustees. This the prelate denied in Into, whereupon hut mtago m*t published hi# proofs from the city records. The former next attempted to quibblu out ol the dilem ma, by stating that ho was not iho owner of the property alleged to have been conveyed to him inasmuch aa it wss leasehold, and the leases only were trsosforred. It appears, however, that tho leases or some of them, were for between 1WU nnd 1000 years, and the consideration in rent, one cent per annum! If this doe# not constitute owner ship, it would bo difficult to say what does- But in the last letter of Mr. Brouki, publtahed Saturday morning, e« en the qutbblo ol tho reverend dignitary ia demolished, by citations from the records show ing that he holds, aa ou>"tr t largo and valuable tracts of real estate, in varioua parts of the city. It is difficult to concoive of any dodge by which the archbishop can escape hi* extremely delicate posi tion. Tho vast extent of the United .States i« illustrat ed by the fact that whilo iho inhabitants of Now Orleana are feasting on straw burru-a, peoplo in tho Northern extremity have snow three feet in depth, in thoir forests. The reader will remembsrl that wo repro duced some dayt ago, from the Macon Telegraph, tho * ealo or aoixuro" (of Cuba' plat form which that print said had been laid down •t a "social gathering" in that pity. Inasmuch as it appeared, according to the Telegraph, that two gentlemen M very widely known in iho political wot Id” figured at tho gathering, we were disposed to attach somo ituportanco to thoir proooodinga.— It turned out, however, that wo wore mistaken. It •eems that the gathering took plaoo in an “ eating house"—that the odltor and hit friend, “ Mr. E. Such being the ease, wo frankly confossed in uur issue of the !8|h, that, had wo known tho cdito r waa present, and " Mr. E. Isaacs waa tho ehio^ cook," wo should nover have fallen into tho egre gious error of attaching any importance to the duck and oyster platform they erected. Wo oven acknowledged oursolvoa "sold, ” and took toav* of thu savory platform, tho "chief cook" and tho bottle holder. Our dyspeptio contemporary returns to tho sub ject, ** like a giant refreshed with now wino,” and ia highly delighted, ii wo may judgo (rent his last iaauo, that wo should cun less ouraolves *’ sold," but ho does not aooin to are that a was at hit exponso. Like the man in " Charcoal Sketch es," who waa always ptedictmg evil, and who was overjoyed whon any of his propbucio* cumo to pass, even though ho lumsolf was tho cliiei sufferer; so with tho editor of the Telegraph, ho grins u ghastly, horrid smile, (he never laughs) bocauso wo have fallen fnto error, and that error wrts in attach ing importance to anything that At had said or could say! Ho charges us also with lolly and vanity. Now if wp have been foolish,(and wo must confess to thn soft impeachment,) it was in plncing too high nn estimate upon uur accuser; and il wo aro vain, it ia chiefly because we have not been ao unfortunate as to deserve the admiration ot 4he " Dismal Jemmy” who presides over tho Macon Telegraph All Ina parade, therefore, of quotations from Swilt, and Pope and Hudibras, goes for nothing, (micas it be to remind ua of those pedants who go about like peacocks, admiring their own prodigious tails, and at whom, whilo they aro coniornplating themselves through a glass ol compound magnifying power, tho world's looking, when it looks at all, through an inverted telescope! Uut to return: Was the "ealo or Beixure**plat form erected by tho editor nmJ his culinary patron (pur nubile prat rum) composed of good honest Cuban oak, or of saucc-pana, champagne hottlct and merry-honca 1 If of the former, then it should be so declared, to the end that Spain may not be taken at a disadvantage by this modern edition of Don Qulxolto and Saneho Panza. And if con structed of tho lattor, then common honesty re quires that the peoplo of Macon should bo advised of it in itmo to look to their chicken coops and smoke-houses ; for tho Barite endo of morula which would lead ono to seize the territory ol a neighbor ing nation in preforcnco to purchasing it, might also induce him in a moment of hunger, to invade the roposo of nn unoffending Shanghai. It be comes those gentlemen, therefore, to show* thoir hands. Persons so "very widely known in the political world," have no right to steal n march* undor cover ol steaming clisfing-dishcs, either upon Cuba or the unsuspecting people of Macon. Abovo all, wo trust our cotemporary will dismiss the Idea that he can ever be funny, or amusing, or witty, or humorous, any m*se than could the tremendous Mr. Pott "f the celebrated Eatanswil! Gazette who rejoiced in an aspect "in which•nlentn impor tance was blended with a iookof unfathomable pro fundity." We would admonish him moreover, to cultivato a cheorlul disposition, and not to grow angry whenever tho shadow of a fellow creature happens to fail across iua path. And ho should never forget, that tho gall and ill humors and acrid jiuccs an<l liquids which go to mako up tho mis anthrope, may he elaborated and intensified to •uch a degree, and may flow back upon the heart ot the possessor in such angry currents, as to embitter his wtiolo nature, nnd in tho end utterly destroy hint.
