History «>r Turkey. By luimartino, author of

Frenclt. Throovola. Vol. I. New York: D.
Appleton & Co.
This is tho first volume of tho lung promised
history of Turkey, by Lntnartino, llto great French
author. It embrace# tho earliest period, and of
uourao the most obscure nnd least familiar, and
carries it down to tho death ol Mahomet 1st, in tho
fifteenth century. Tito work haa evidently* heen
prepared wilh gieat pains, and ovineva a voty ex-
tsnded und careiul research into the hidden reeea*
sea of the past. In its style it Is Ittoro composed
and sober than Lamartine's earlier writings, but is
still finely, oiton eloquently, written. Its introduc
tion contain* an Interesting account of the presont
Sultan of Turkey, nnd an earnest nnd eloquent ax
preaaion of tho writer's sympathy in behalf of
Turkey of tho present day, and of its part in tho
Eastern war. The work is a valuable contribution
to the histories of modern Europe.
Tins WoNDKarur. Adventurer of Captain Driest.
New York: Redlieid.
Tho chief part of this volume is filled with a
wild, extravagant story, of considerahlo humor, nnd
very considerable smartness—two qualities with
which American readers ul ways sympathise. Tho
" I agenda of City and County," which concludo
tht volume, are also pleasant reading, in both proso
and poetry.
Kenneth ; Or tho Rear Guard of tho Grand Army,

Tho appenranco of this book has been expected
with impatience by tbo many adntireta ol tho gift
•d authoress, Mias Youge, ever since ilsnnnouneo-
tiicnt. It is not considered equal to the Heir of
Redclyffe. Possibly, it is an earlier prodticiioni
and may not have been clabornlcd with the sumo
rate. It is however, quite dillorcnl iu its charac
ters, scenes and incidents, front tho domestic life
portrayed in ttiat exquisite fiction. The retreat
from Mosco.w tho sotloringa ot tho troops, and tho
death scenes of many of tho earlier characters oi
the story, are well narrated and interesting, hut
the interest is not unmmgicd with regret at patting
with them so soon. Yetthotnio is well written,
and will, we doubt not, enjoy no small popularity.
Thu integrity, endurance, and triumphant pcn»o-
versnee of Kenneth are linely drawn, and will not
tail to be the attractive feature ol the volume.
