in regard to Bishops Barron and Can land, it
affords us pleasure to say, that so inr as «ur knowl
edge extends, they at well as other resilient Ro
man Catholic priests, did their whole duty lo their
fl«ck. They wero engaged day and night in
visiting their sick and administering consola
tion to their dying- This it notorious,
is cheerfully acknowledged. But wo havo
JTe: to learn that they offered any
whatever lo persons of iho Pmtosnnt faith,
dood, they could hardly have d<»no so, ns th<ir
time wjs almost wholly occupied with their own
people, who wero greater sufferers than the na
tive Protestant population. It is woll kuuwn, how
ever, lhai Prutostani clergymen did give every
attention in their power to persons of thu Homan
Catholic pursuasion.
■As to the charge that Protestant ministers
"cowardly ran away from the scones ol danger,"
and "fled from their field of duty,” wo pronounce
it,upoo our own personal knowledge, nn un
mitigated slander, without one particle of truth lo
•attain it. Wo remained in the city until the epi
demic had spent its lury—long after the death ol
Bishops Barron nnd (Jartland—and know that not
one Protestant clergyman loft after the appearance
of the fever. They all continued nl the post of
duty and danger, as bccamo Christian heroes, and
every ono of them, with a solitary exception, had
the fever.
These are facts known to thousands, and can
not bo denied; and being such, w# call upon the
Baltimore press to give Ida Protestant clergy of
