It has been called forth by some editorial remarks ol ours in yeatcr- day'a issue, in which we .undertook to defend the ProtcaUot clergy of Savannah from the slanderous attack made upon them in the Roman Catholic Provincial Council at Baltimore, by tho Rev. John McCafRey: Savannah, May 82, ISM. To the Editor of the Republican Daar Sir,—In one of your editorials this nv>rn* lag, you comment severely, but justly, upon some remark* imputed by the Baltimore Sun to the Rev. John McCaffrey, D.*D., during aVtrmon of hia before thelate Catholic Council at Baltimore. The sermon appears in have boon a eulogy on Bish op* Baron and Gartland, both ol whom died in the discharge o f their sacerdotal duties, during the epidemio which so fatally swept our city, last fall. Now if would be hard for Doctor McCaffrey to •ay too much of these good Bishops, both ol wh«m died martyrs to the heroic chanto-a of religion. But if Doctor McCaffrey haa said what the Sun has imputed to him. regarding the Protestant cler gy of Savannah during that epidemic, then I cheerfully add my testimony to yours, that he haa been greatly misinformed. It ia altogether untrue that they abandoned their posts or left their flocks to the chartgr of oithor Catholic bishop or priest And I am quite persuaded, that such an aseertioo. ia a mistake made by the Baltimore Sun for Doc tor McCaffrey, and not by Doctor McCaffrey tor the Sun. It ia nevertheless true, that the Catholic clergy did administer both temporal and religious aid in many instances to persona not previously of thoir own fold. Some ol theae passed through my own hands, some are now living, and some died in the fullness of Chriatain faith and hope. But ot the Protestant clergy of Savannah, truth demauds of me tbe moet honorable testimony, and that ia, that they all stood by their people, during the whole scourge, with a fortitudo at which even the heroism of a Catholic Pricet need not blush. One of those who saw it all, Edu’asd Qitulzv. Wo learn with pleasure, that during tho epidem ic the Roman Catholic clergy " did administer both temporal and religion* aid in many instances to persons not previously of their own fold H We were hero during the epidemic and never heard of it before: but as Father Quigley, a priest in th»t church, ought to know, and hn says it in so, we gladly accept hia statement and place it upon re cord in justice to himself and Ids associates in regard to tbe sermon of Dr. .McCaffrey, a* published in the Baltimore Bun, we beg loavo to add a word. It was a funeral discourse, com memorative of Biahops Chance of Natchoz; Bar ron of Liberia (who died in this city); Gartland, of Savannah; and Reynolds of Charleston. It was preached in the Cathedral ol Baltimore, in the presence of a large congregation, and was report ed in tbe secular press of the next morniog The offensive expressions in regard to the Protestant clergy of Savannah, wo find reported in two of the Baltimore papers now before us—not in <ho same language, it ia true, but in form and auhatanre the same—the difference of language being proof of tbe general correctness of the report. We conclude, therefore, that Dr. McCraffn-y did eay tbe Protestant clergy of savannah "cow ardly ran away from the scenes of denger,” to u*o tho language of the report in the Balutnere Sun, sod that BUhope Barron and Gartland "attended At the bedside of dying Protcatanta whose pastors bad fled from tho plague," to use that of the repoA loth# Baltimore American. There could have been no inducement for those journals to Islsify his language ; oo the contrary, (hero waa every reason why they should report him correctly, as well out of regard for truth, ae for their thousand! of Catho lic readers in Maryland. We are forced to thie conclusion tho mors irresistibly, by the feet, that we have teen no correction of the reports of the Rev. gentleman's sermon—a circumstance,in view of tbe gravity of tho chargee, which ia not surer p- tiblc of explanation, unleea Indeed he did employ the langsage ascribed to him. We eatmotgbelUve, however, that Dr. McCaf frey would have mado ao acrioua a charge except upon the report of others. Doubtless he was mis informed, or deceived by some thoughtless or ma licious individual ; and we predict that this will be hia explanation. We trust hnwavar, should he offer any explanation, its wo think ho should 1 , that be will accompany it with th# name of hu Inform ant, If f It shouldgfppoar that wo are right in be< lievioglie has been imposed upon by a fa (mi state ment. We agree with Father Quigley in th« remark thet th* Proteaunt clergy displayrd "a fortitude #1 isAick eeen ike heroism of a Catholic pneel need not blush," nor indeed any other kind of prieat»orofficial, or Individual. Perhaps w# should also have agreed with him if be had changed hia language, and arid that they eh»wed " a fortitude worthy iheadmirdflenolaCaiholicpriael." Whs tber tills Isnguago would have been in as good taate es that which be employed, Is a matter we leave to rhetoricians.
