At the lime the Isabel left, the Jamestown was the only vessel of the squadron in port, the others having gono to Havana on a cruise. The Jamestown was daily expecting orders to sail for the coast of Africa, to take the place of the Constitution— This laat named vessel had arrived of Koy West from Africa. Tha city was visited with a copious fall of rain last afternoon and evening, h seemed to be general in this portion of the State. fSF Bishop Elliott was to have administered the rite of confirmation at St. Paul's Church and the Cbtrrcb of the Atonement, yesterday, in Augus ta. then starling j at ouo tlraa dealing in Insinuations and at another In direel charges without founda tion In fact i rendering Itaell an object of ridicule one moment and ol pity tha next—and all for the purpose of proving that black ia not black, but whita *, In other word*, that It was not tha Gtor* gian, but tha RkpuiKceii and nnother morning paper that suppressed tbs foul slsnders hoaped upon tho hosds of the Protcatunt ministers of Ss- vannsh. Wo havo heard of tho ’holght of Impu dence'and tho 'depths ul folly,' but this effort ol tho Georgian attains so altitude in tho one and a'low er deep,'in tha o'hor, lotaHy eclipsing any thing ever recorded in the history of tho pres*. A simpto statement ot facta will act tho matter •right. On tho 10th lost., tho Rev. John McCaffrey, D. P.. President of Mount St. Mary's Collego, Etn- .nitsburg, Md., the Roman Catholic Provincial Council icing In aoesiuu at Baltimoro, preached a Atnurnl discourse, commemorative of tho char actor »nd services of curtain Catholic prelates who had Jicd the preceding year, including Biahopa Barron sud Garitaml who fell at this ptaco. Speaking uf Bishop Barron's sorvicce hero during tho epidomio of laat year, Dr.McCaffrey ia reported in tho Dal* .imoro Sun to havo said: "Whilst a boat of other ministers cowardly ran away front tho sconce of daugor, he was at his poet." Spunking of Bishop Gartland, ho ia reported to havo said: "Ho was at tho bedside of dying l’rotostnnta, whoso ministers had tied trom their Hold of duty." In ita issue of tho 15th inst., tho Georgian pub lished so much of i lie Sun's report of Dr. McCaf- ircy’s sermon as rolatcd to Bishops Barron and Gartland, except the cxtrals we have juit given, which it omitted or suppressed. Yet on tho 26th inst., (Saturday last) it lias tho moro then Arctic coolness to aay . "It bus ln;on insinuated by tho Republican and Morning AVirs that tho Georgian sought, for no good uioiivo, to suppress tho chorgca above men tioned. Now, the pi-oplo of Savannah, who havo boon treated to absurdities like this, will bo nut* prued to learn that eo lar trom the Georgian, it is the Republican and Morning News, aluuo, that ato uhuoxiuuato this accusation." This certainly does not call for comment. Uut tho Georgian seeks to relieve itaell by saying its editor called aitontiuti to the slanderous charge ol Dr. McCaffrey, "boloro two Protestant clergy men ana other respected citizens," and adds that 'tho editor of the Georgian is tho very first that called public attention to it.” If to mention a thing to a few individuals is to call "puMic alien* lion" to it, then we do not see tho uso of newspa pers. Tho charges in tho Baltimoro papers wen* read by thousand*; the oditur of the Georgian mentions them to a fow friends, and affirms that this is calling "public attention" to them, "and in (ho proper way." We did not know before that a paper could bo guihy of so great an abeurdity. Fueling tho weight of tho odium it has brought upon ita bead, tho Georgian strives to drag us down along with itself. It says tbo Republi can * Did knowingly, for a time, euppreae them (Dr. Met ufiioy'n charges) till, indeed, tho subject was urgently pressed upon thuir attention" It adds further, speaking of tho Republican, that wo had confeaaed in our issuo of Thursday, that wo **wero aware of the slanders some days ago." Now, neiihor of these assertions is true. Wo did not" euppro-e " tho charges till our attention was called to them, and wo never said that wo "were aw.re of tho alaudcra some days ago." What wo did say, was, that wo ware awnro of the dttciepaticy, between what tho Georgian publish ed a* Dr. McCaffrey's sermon and what we pub- listiid, but that we did not care to lie the first to sail attention to it, tho discrepancy—lor ail which ♦t should thank and not misrepresent us. This was satd in our issuo of Thursday, having already, in our impression of Tuesday, oxposed tho slan ders referred to. Wo do rxrhango with tho Baltimore Sun, but tailed to examine tie report ol the proceedings of :ho Roman Catholic Provincial Council, suppos ing it Mas u local, nr at all events an ecclcsitisii- cut matter, in which our readers could have no Inlet*si- On the 21st inst., however, ft highly to- fighting the battle of the South in Kansas, asserting tho right of Southern men to emigrate to that terri tory with their slaves, denouncing all official inter- feronoa In tho contest now wagingthtTSi assorting tho right of Kansas or any other territory to como into the'Uniou with or without slavery as may suit themselves, approving the Nsbraska-Kansss act, expressing regard for the northern men who nru disposed to do juellce to tho South, and declaring that tho peuple uf Goorgia ought not to affiliate with any party at the North which will nut recog nise these principles. Tho resolutions declare also, that tho insults offered our flag by Iho Spanish au thorities of Cuba 'Montand tho moat prompt and energetic attention of our government." Tho eighth resolution is as follows : Rrtnirtil, That tho 4th Resolution of tho "Geor gia Platform" ol December I860, ought to ho firm* ly maintained by tlm whole South and tlint wo recommend the Convonrion at Milledgovilli'to re affirm it, and make it tho lundamontal basts und guide ot Domocrntio action in all figure cntcstH between tho North and South in which thu inaii- tut ion of slavery may bo involved. Tho llllt, 19th, and 13th resolutions denounce tho American party in tho most unsparing terms, and urgo "our brother DemocraU" who havo con nected thomsclvcii with tho order,to return to their early luvo. Tho 14th resolution is in thusn words: Resolved, That without relorenco to old party divisions, wo aro williou to ulfilinto in party nsau- elation, with all rnon who will take position upon tho principles and tho platform embraced m the foregoing resolutions, aud respectfully invito tlu ir co-operation. Wo shouldn’t wonder. Old Domocrnta nnd old Whiga, Northern nnd Southern men, Abolitionists and Disunionists, would linvo been "willing to affiliate in party association" on tho saino terms- In othor words, llto party in Columbua are ready to teceivo all mon who will subscribe to their prin ciples. Uut tho story i* only half told. Mnj. John II. Iluwsrd, an old Southern Rights Democrat, pre sented n minority report. Ho was unwilling to denounce Southern Know Nothing*," teho could be counted on in the struggle with Northern Abo lition." Hu thought it " bad policy to insult men whoso nid wo need." II*i offered, therefore, tho following preamble and resolutions as u subhtiium: Whereas tho history of the pn»t fin* convinced u*, that wo whom intercut nod affection ntlaoli os to iho South, havo nothing to hope, hut everything lo fear at tho hands ol tho political organization* of the non-slsvehidding States, from the spirit of Abolitionism which pervades Hnd controls nil ol them: And whereas, the action of these States upon the question ol slavery conclusively allows that a large majority ot tho people thereof arc ac tuated by one common sentiment ol hostility to tho mstittiiion* of the South: And whereas tin* gallant band of Patriots within those Slat*-* win, are tnends to the South are faithful to the Consti tution, end wlm wo remomber with gratitude, have lu-on routed, disbanded nod almost annihilated, we believe the exigency imperatively requires us t<> bo one people m d one party. Bo il therefore Resolved, That Iho time lias arrived when the differences which have divided our fellow citizen* should be forgotten, and n com mon enemy, and a common danger undo us(*»r iho common safety. 2 Bo it further Resolved, That to attain this end, the delegates appointed at this meeting t*< iho Convention to ho held nt Millcdgovtllo, on the-——day ol Juno next, be, nnd they aro hereby, instructed to make n<> nomination tor Governor at that Convention, but to advocate the publication by the Con von: mu ot a call upon iho people ot the State, without distinction of iwrtv. whether Deni- ocruts, Wings, Know Nothings, Temperance men and tho opponents ol all, to vend delegates toju convention to t*c held at a place and time therein named, lor tho por|io*o *>l nominating iv G«»«< r- nor, and unluriing a banner under whose folds, all Southern men may array themsolvcs. Mnj. Howard's resolutions were lost, only one vole being cast tor them, the Know-Nothing Do moeratM having withdrawn. Tho original res dn- timis repotted by Judge Iverson wero then adopt- ed. Tho action of tho meetingsponka far itself, and requires no comment. The reader may now un derstand how utterly worthlost aro tbo profoksmns of col tain leader* und journalist*, who call upon 45 utbern men to unite ns one party, and yet tlatly reject a proposhion which seeks to accomplish what they pretend to desire. Tho Columbus Tillies affects to havo discovered a Grecian horse in the alleged third degreo ot in* American party.
