Wo would direct attention to the proceedings of a meeting ol tho men of all parties, held in Columbus, Saturday evening last. It will bo seen that tho meeting recommended, that neither of tho existing parlies in (Jcorgia shall hold a convention to nominate a candidate lor Governor; but that the Peoplo shall send up delegate* to Millcdgc- tttle, on the 4th of July, for tho purpose of laying down a platform, upon which all panics may Aland, and selecting a candidate lor whom men of all creeds can vt«io. The object of the meeting is most praiseworthy. If the whole South could be brought to occupy the same position, we might then hid Uufianco to uur enemies. But can this be done f Is it practica ble, even in Georgia 1 Wo must be permitted to doubt it. Tlio revelations of the past two weeks lead ua to tho unpleasant conclusion, that tlm peo ple of Georgia wero never really more divided than they are at this very moment. Thu letter of Mr. Stephens, thn bitter denunciations of the American party by thu' Johnson press, ih« pro- ccedings even of tho Democratic mooting in Co lumbus, held only a fow days before that ol which we arc now speaking, all satisfy us that ilia coun ty is not yot prepared for tho political millen nium so patriotically urged by our friends In Co lumbus We shall, however, offer no opposition t« the policy recommended ; on the contrary, wethall be glad to see it carried out to a successful consumma tion. was the Constitution of Ins country. Next to that, he desired no better wmdmg-ahcot to bu wrapped around him tliHU the principles ol that letter, ami he wished Ills epitaph to be, "Hero lips olio who never deceived a friend or betrayed oven an ene my." Tho Cona'itutionalist adds: "Mr. Toombs was then called for and respond ed in a most eloquent and impressive speech nnd in his happiest manner. " Wo regret our space will not rnahlo us this morning to givo a sketch ol bis very mteroeiiug speech. "Mr. Thomas, of Klbert, responded to loud calls for him in a few appropriate remarks, which wore well received, after which tho meeting dis persed in high spirits, and in good order." The Constitutionalist represents tho meeting to have been very largo and enthusiastic, some two thousand persons twins* present. Llierarr Polices. Wo subjoin the resolution : " Rftolred, That the presiding «fficer of tho Charnh.-r.be instructed to communicate forthwith , with tlit'President of the Washington and Now Orleans Telegraph Company, setting h.r'h the un- resaunabtenesa of the pro|e««d change, and thu claims which this city und if n i lunge fie cffucfed, lo have the Relay station established in Chorlttton." The Charleston Courier, in an articlo noticing tha proceeding* of th« Chamber of Commerce, j not bnly opposes Iho proposed change to Augusta, but contends that Char button is the "proper point for the Relay Station." A simple statement will show, we think, that August* is tho only proper place for tho Relay Station. There aro two lines now In operation between New York and New Orleans: one called the Western lino, by way of Louisville, Ky. ; the oth er by way of Washington, Columbia, Augusta, Montgomery, and Mobile. Tlio Inner lure, from Washington to New Orleans, is known a* the Washington and New Orleans line, and is con trolled by a single company. The two lines— the Western sud ihu seaboard—are connectrd by * wiro extending from J*>uisvill* via Nash ville and Atlanta, to Augusta. Thu single fact would seem to indicate* Augusta as th« P»'»per placo lor the Relay Station, now fuel si Columbia,it being tho only point of connection between ihe Western and seaboard linos But when it is fememberod, that there is * side lias leading from Augusta to Charleston, and another to Susannah, and that Charleston can bo served as cheaply and expeditiously Irom Augusts aa from Columbia, and Savannah much more so, wo are unablo to appreciate the opposition of iho Charleston Chamber of Com merce lo Ihe proposed change. The change w||| work no disadvantage to Charleston, nor any |.>m ' el revenue lo the company. On the contrary, II 1 tho Relay Station were removed from Columbia j lo Augusts, WO feel confident that tho Increased I patronage that would be extended io thn lien hy Um people of Georgia Would add largely to the 1 btttioeae ol tha company. Tl»e mam wire now passes through Augusta, 1 and yet the people of that city ar^frnnpellird to ‘ receive their meeesgir at Columfajgj.over a aide! wire hy way of timtlnmn f Thev same is tlm case with Savxnnalr. Tliere Iwlng no jmrmanrni instrument epowMribfough wire at Augusts, nil the ni swages, fbfBavaarish are taken off at Ci>- lundna, and dlspsfeheii thenre hy e aide line via Charleston sud Augusta, to thn office in this city. If this lateral zig-zag wire should bn ontol older, as It frequently is, we have to go wilhool our die- pstthes, or lake liwm second hand from orlisr «e* pere. The present arreoiemrnt is bad enough hr Georgia, and many of opr lergeei iiousee here have been thinking eerlooely of discontinuing the use of Ihe line. Oet should the Relay fi'etion be ehauged from Columbia lo Charleston, which le off the mala wire, we should f«*l it m be oer Imperativ# duty to cell the attention of our Mute LegieUlure lo the subject- Having granted ihe Company cor- porate privilege# and ihe righi ol way through ihe Hlile,lh4 Legisistnre might Justly interpose tor the proteetion of ear |»eeple agsin*! this end other wrongs, which we have mu alluded in and wlilvh on eocosnl iti their serious iherauter, we trust it wilt not become aeeeeeary to dteuuse.
