Crops In Western (Srorgla.
We give plaee with pleasure to tho subjoined
interesting letters, the first from a friend in Mua-
cogee county, and tho second Irom one in Coweta.
In laying them beToro the reader, wo would again
oall the attention of plantets and factors to the fol
lowing inquiries, to which these tetters aro respon
se* :
1. What proportion do you think tho land plant
ed with Cotton this spring, hears to that of last
jreanmd tho fear provioua in your own neighbor
9. What it your opinion of the "atand," now ob
tained and the condition of (ho new crop as com

UrATotc, Muscoosk County, Ga., )
31st May, 1855. f
Messrs. Editors .—In your paper of tho 26ih
ulul find tho requou to the Planter* and Factors,
to which 1 hasten to reply
| In mv own neighborhood, 1 think tho proportion
of land planted in Cotton this year, as compared
with last year, is nnQ-ihira I.
Tho stand of Cotton was considorod bad until
within the last'threo weeks, when we hadj light
•howors ot rain, which brought up the remaining
seed, causing tho stand to be uneven, aomo stalks
being fifteen inchosaud others no: moro than three
incht-a high. I think the crop more backward ih:a
season than for the averago of former years at this
date.
There is not a single bale of cotton of the old
crop left over in tins district.
Wheat crops are excellent and partly harvested.
Some crops ot Oats are tolerable, others inditlur-
out. The Corn crop ts promising, and if wo should
be blessed with propitious seasons, it will be an
abundant one. In haste trely yours,
i. A. i.. L.
Nrwnan, Ga , May, 30ih, 1955.
Messrs. EditorsTho farmers in Wesicm
Georgia aro rejoicing,—alter having good rains—
at the prospect* ol the growing crops. Tho wri
ter presumes that there has not been so good a
general prospect in five years. The late rains have
improved the Corn nnd Oat crop* very much. The
latter will not yield so much as it would have
done il rain had have come ten days earlier—but
there is no doubt that the crop wij| be a fair one.
Tbe Colton, though very young, is doing well, and
is much mnro forward thnnat this timo last year.
The Wheat crop, now ripe and ready to be har-
vested, ia a good one. In fact, the proa|>eeta aro
very flattering, io iho counties of Coweta, Heard,
and Troup.
The Cotton crop of this (Coweta) county of last
year, bos nearly all gone to matket. I presuno
there is not more than 800 or a 1000 bales now on
hand in tho county. This estimate ia baaod upon
the optuiona of others—and 1 have no doubt but
that it correct.
The price of Flour and Com Meal have been
higher in this section than they were over known
to be. The former article has been very scarce at
#12 to fill per barrel,—while the latter bat gone
op from $1 to 91.37 1-2 and 91 ^ per busnel.
Meal can bo bought now at the mills at 91 25 cash.
We are anxious for the good old days to return,
when we may sell the m-ccwarics n| life, and find
but fow buyers, and those at low prices. Let the
rains continue, and with the largo quantity of land
planted in corn, wo will bo sure to see better times
Yours truly, Cowita.
Cholera in New Orleans.—A privato letter to
a merchant in this city says, “the cholera has
made its apnearanco in. New Orleans, and has
created considerable alarm among tho inhabi

The largo and elegant ateaniabip Quaker City

Charleston line.
Haivat Last in. Arkansas.—According to wr*.
tern papers, there have been copious rains through
out Arkansas, ninth to tho relief of the planting
and steamboat interests. The rivers, it is now
believed, will be navigable for tho rest ol the
season.
The Slavery KxrirE*ir.NT in Mtasot-iir.—A

and rsviow of tho proceedings or the meet
ing were prepared with much hssto, for our
evening edition, and the proceedings being
vory long, wo ovurlokod in tho hurry of
writing tho resolution to which our attention
is now called—iho only one, I: soems, which w^dld

now givo tho resolution, as follows:
lie solved, 'That we consider tho union of the
8outh upon the foregoing pisiform, essential to the
salcty of the South, and the porpetuity of a con
stitutional union ot theso States, and wo reedm-

and party association as will secure tho supremacy
of tho constitution, tho tights of every Mellon
under it, and tho administration of the govsrnment
upon true Republican principles.
During tho progress of tho meeting, Maj. Howard
offered a series of resolutions, the object of which
waa to induce all parties in Goorgia to forego sepa
rate partisan nominations for Governor, and to
prevail upon tho Ponpto ’to seed up delegates to
MitledgovtUo,"far tho putposi. of nominating a
Governor, and unfurling a banner, under whoso

Tho resolution* of Maj. Howard, sustained and
backed by tho Know Nothings of Columbus, wore
voteddown by tho unto meeting which adopted
tho resolution given above, l'hie (act vory naturally,
and wo muat think, very justly, led us to the con
clusion that the meeting could not havo acted in
good faith, and that its professions in favor of
Southern union wero not sincere.
NVo aro strengthened in this conclusion by tho
following pregnant fact: Immediately after adop
ting tho rcaolution quoted above, tho mooting pro
ceeded to denounco, in tho most offensive and In
sulting terms, a large and rospcetablo portion of

matised them ns "secret spies." Not contont with
thig, tho Times, in tho name issue in which theso
degrading chargoa were made, indirectly accused
the members of tho Amorican parly ol "treason to
tho Stnto of Georgia/'
Now wo submit, in view of these nccuutiona,
that tho meeting was »*ithor insincere In ita pro
fessions in buhalf of Southern union,«»r was in
fatuated and blind to th# legitimate consequence*
ol its own action. It could not expect, and conse
quently could not desire, tho American party to

Wo need only say, in reply to thi*, that wo have
never justified or delendod tho "oath," as tho Times
calls 11, as eminently right nnd proper, far tho
reason that wo did not know whether it was cor
rectly given. According to tho Times, tho Know
Nothing ol tho "third degroo" takes upon himself
an obligation "lo uphold, maintain and dofand
the Union; to discountcnanco every attempt,
eommg from any and every quarter, which
is designed or calculated to destroy nr sub
vert it, or to weaken iia bonds." This obliga
tion, it is contended, conflicts with tho 4th resolu
tion of tho Georgia Platform, which pledges tho
Suita to raaist curtain enumerated wrouga even to
a disruption of tho Union. As slated on a former
ocasion, we seo no such oontlict as that alleged.
Tho object of Iho "third degr#®," supposing it to
bo correctly given, is, if wo undorsfand tho Rng-
Jfah language, to defend tbo union against tbo ut-
tack* of fanatics, to discourage ovory attempt
which is designed or calculated to destroy or sub
vert it, or to weaken its bonds. It docs not pledge
tho Know Nothing against a dissolution ol tho
Umotj, or bind him to maintain it under all cir
cumstance* ; it tequiros him only to ducountcn-
aflbe whatever is intended Ut overthrow it, or tint
is calculated to bring about its subversion This,
to us, appears very plain, and we aro surprised that

But that wo may not ho misunderstood, wo now
lecture far the information ol tho Times, that we,
and so far us wo know, thu American party in
Georgia, w ill stand by and maintain thu Georgia
Platform in its lull integrity. Nay further,—should
the North prevent tho admission of Kansas or sny
other tcrntuiy into the Union as a slave Htato, wo
ofamld tevl tfiauho time had arrived when tho
Noiih and the South, like Abraham and 1>>I,
should tnko different paths, and thus beluving, w*
should feel it lo bo our solemn duty to advocRtu a
diM.ilutiori of tho Union.
Tho Times will now see that it and its aytnpa-
thiseri do not posses* a monopoly rd Southern
patriotism, and 1 hat it is possible notwithstanding
their assumptions to the contrnry, that other peoplo
can ho as irue to the South .«• themselves. Tho
soldier who is r?cr braggingof his courage, is tho
surest to run away when the fight bruins ; and it
suiniMimcs happens that politicians who aro fond
of .{eroding iliCrir superior farostght und loyally
