The Democratic Convention,
We publish at length tho proceedings of tho to-
•tlloi Democratic convention, which mot at Mil—
Jedgeville i uesday last.
Tho convention haa committed several grave
errors:
1. Tho nomination of the present incumbent.
9. The adoption of a resolution approving of
Guv. Johnaon'a administration.
3. The adoption of a resolution approving of
President Pierce's admin titration.
4. The aubterfugo by which it attempts to make
it appear that tho party is ready to conso all af-
filiation with Northern Freesoiiers, while it per
sists in keeping up ita connection with them.
5. The abrogation of the "oystor platform" for the
*eale or aeiiure" of Cuba, adopted at AIncon by
**Mr. E. Isaacs" and his friend, and the substitu-
lion of a rickety plank, with a dolphlo inscription
upon it.
6. The denunciation or the American party.
With these millitonea about Uia neck, Guv.
Johnson will sink so deep that tho hand of re*
•direction will never be ablo to reach him £1
It remains to bo soon whether Mr. Stephens and
his ooadjutous will co operate with a party which
persist* in keeping up an organisation that ho as*
sens i* afflicted with "dry rot,’’and which blindly
endorses tho administrations of Gov. Johnson and
President Pierce, both of which he is understood
to condemn. Without Mf. Stephens' assistance,
the party can do nothing, and with it, it will be
l mposaihle to elect Gov. Johnson.
The convention expresses itself in fsvor of "the
annexation of Cuba, to this country, at the ear
liest period compatible with our national honor
and treaty obligations." It is of no consequence
whither the manner of the acquisition is "compati
ble with onr national honor and treaty obligations."
90 that the period, at which it is accomplished, is.
Now we submit that the "oyster platform" erect
ed at Macon—viz: "the sale or seizure of Cuba;
may the first be last, and last be first—" is more
direct, moro manly, and altogether a moro sub-
auntial structure, notwithstanding ‘ho peculiar
circumstance* under which it was constructed.
The Incorporation of 'the4th resolution ol iho
Georgia Platform ia*implr a trick. It is n spring*
with which to catch Union woodcocks—nothing
more. After denouncing tho Georgia PUtforui
as rotten and worthless after stigmatising its ar
tificer* as “base aubrniasionists," and threatening
them with "the grape vine," the harlequin alacriir
with which members of the convention mounted
it, can deceive no one. "Surely in vain iOhe net
•pread in the sight of any bird."
In fine, the covention ha* done its work well—
not for Gov. Johnson, but for hia opponents.

lord to go to enormous oaelasa expenditure, and to
make ope portion of hia customers pay far the ex-
oe*eee end gormandising of the rest. Tho iron bod
of Procreate* must have been, after alt, a hole)
dining table. He wfio dine* temperately. and ra*
tlonidly upon soup, nod a tingle alio* ol a single
dish—eschewing with just and wholesome horror,
the crowd of greasy 4n(rms«(«, the indigeatlhls
tort*i plea and patiriea which do service in making
up the impoalng bill of fare In bad French, which
nobody can rend—pays exactly tho sains aa tha
glutton who bogina at the top and eats resolutely
and oontoientiously avorythlng on Ilia bill, winding
ofT with "attothor piece of mince pie, and another
saucer of ice cream." For the first, a dollar ia too
much—for tho lattor, It la too littlo. But by charg
ing all alike, tho landlord just managoa to make
one hand wash tha other, and to keep square with
tho oxtortionato demands of tho huckster*—thoae
cormorants without bowels, thoso minister* of
starvation and high price*.
Now, what I* tho remedy t A very simplo ono.
Lot tho landlord |*V in a fair and varied supply for
hi* larder, and serve up a wu||.selected and sea
sonable bill or fare, at so much for eaclf dish. Let
tho guest eat when ho plonsca, nnd the waiter who
sorves him, keep an account of what is ordered,
and.nt tho end of the meal, present tho guest with
a little ivory chock, with tho amount marked on it.
Thus, adding up hia cheek* { ho knows, when ho
wishes to leave, exactly what hia bill is, and has,
besides, the gratifying consciousness that ho is not
going to pay seventy-fivo cents or a dollar a day
for what some other guest has eaten.
By tho* uniting tho principle of tho hotel with
that uf the restaurant and the cafo, every guest
would be served with exactly what ho tfeslrcd.and
rnado to pay only for that j and tho landlord would
find that h« could Iced tho aamo number of guests
with one half tlto expense of marketing, rare game,
fruit* Mid vegetables, etc., etc.,a* at present; whilo
hi* per coinage of profit would he handsomely in
creased over the avorago rate by the present sys
tem.
Tho adoption of this plan would possess another
most desirable advantage, in doing away with tho
terrific and disgusting rush and scramblo of the
prosent dollnr-apiece tablo-d’hote, the military nta-
nccuvering, tho marching and countermarching,
tho hell-ringing, (he banging and clattering of the
head waiter, and hia grinning army of volunteers,
who tramp about with thoir tin dish-covers, ns if
they wero on their way to a tnrgot excursion, and
especially with that systom of bribery nnd favorit
ism, by which a few guests got everything, and
others little or nothing.
Hi’publlcan Itlovenieut in England.
h is a cheering sign for the poople of England
to hear tho democratic sentiments now uttered by
the press, at public meetings, and in Parliament.
When public meetings insist that government shall
bo conducted and tho laws administered on the
principle of the greatest good to tho greatest num
ber, public sentiment is ready to sustain such a
principle, and class privilege and oligarchical rule,
have nearly lost their influence. The resolution
in tho House of Lords, of which notice of motion
Was given, declares "that it is only through the
selection of men lor public employment, without
regard to anything but the public service, that the
country can fo»pe u> prosecute the war successfully,
and to obtain its own legitimate object-a secure
and honorable peace." Tho ttotico of motion was
rejected; but its introduction and the sentiments
elicited in the debate are very significant ut popular
feeling. I,«rd Bllenborough is reported as utter
ing tho following sentiments:
But, my lords, how can we, sitting hero by the
hereditary right conferred, for tho most part, upon
our ancistors, lur their services lo tho State, lor
