Tho waters aro distinguished for their curative qualities, and in many chronic diseases their efficacy has been placed beyond doubt, l’amphlets containing an analysis of the waters, and a lull account of their virtue in particular cases, may be had at our office. Having enjoyed the care oi Mr. Coleman, the proprietor, at the Astor House, Hew York, and the Coleman House, Knoxville, we are enabled to give our personal recmnmondatiou of his excellent character as a landlord. jy Yesterday was a dismalulay—full of sud den showering* and melancholy shadows. To ur sols evening the weather soitooed, and about ■unset—the most gorgeous sunset we ever beheld— there was promise of a golden morrow stretched out in tho west, which thoaotrest ascetic or boldest sceptic dtTtd not doubt. At the hollain'* verge, snd strelcipng half -round tho borisoo'a sweep, was a long arc of burnished gold—above it, rose and crimson bands, engirdling the earth—next above a broad bar of deepest bine—not tho blue of the sky, but a cerulean cloud, to deeply blue as almost to darken the gold benoath and the radiance above) which stretched far up towards the aonith, and shod a rich gilding upon roof, and street, and troe, that lay benoath, basking in its light, and hushed and placid as if overpowered and awed by its trancend* ant tpondoN Looking on this sunset througn one of tho city's narrowing lam*—the best point of observa tioo— was like gsaing down tho long vista ot futu turity upon tbe bVissiurisfes, which smile tor tho yoilog, the gentle, snd tho good, and seem to beckon them to como and dwelt amid thorneeron ity .forever! A lovelier sunset never smiled upon the earth. In all tho blue immensity of heuvett there was not a cloud that did not rejoice in its gulden light, and tho very air seemed impregnated with hope and joy. Pent up within the city’s walls, it is tint ours to enjoy these splendors from tho mountain t<*p—to sit by purling streams that ’twixt tho m»aa grown banka discourse their trickling melody—to list the winged choristers of the groves, chirping their prayers and warbling gratitudo. 'Til not ours to, roam through meadows of sweet-scented clover, to hoar iheploufhtx.)-whistling as he walks, nor catch the fresh odor of tho up-turned glebe. Yet in the veins there runs a sweet delight; in Sabbath bells Wb may discern a prayer; and even from tho city's heart the eye may pierce the golden burs snd tho vaulted dome of blue, beyund which heaven lies. He who "draws tho drapery of his couch about him," and sinks to rest, as did last evening's sun, may woll forgot the clouds and »t«rms that ob scured tho earlier hours ot his short-lived day. tST Col. Ku good ru- lilt to believe that the sale of thJ Canadas tojho Government ^f the United Statoe is about to be taken Into oonaideration by the British Cabinet and to be submitted to Parliament. This impor tant step, It says, has been euggeetod by- the aeeu> ' mulating debt of England, now amounting to about eight hundred millions of popnds sterling,or four bllliont of dollars) the- amount ol new burdens which the war la caating upon an already over taxed people} the financial embarraiamenia entail* ed on the mother country by unproductive ooloqle*, end the formidable attitude pf opposition recently assumed by the coinnitrolal olssses against the rule ol the aristocracy, and tho evils of their political aapremkoy. It ia Mated that many of the leading statesmen and <politioal economiata or England advocate the sale of aotnaof tho principal oolonlot, with ihoir own oonaent, or the concession to thorn of national independence. Tho Times quotes Me- Cullock, who says: • " Our colonics Jn America anil the West Indies have never furnished one farthing towards defray- ing any pan of tho general uxpondhnro of tho United Kingdom ; tltuy aye indeed, exempted by express statute, from any such charges; at tho asme Unto that .tho fleets and armies required fur tlioir protection in war, ami their security in poaoo, sro all supplied by the British nation, and cost thorn nothing.. lira only advantage, in a national point of view, derivable from them, must, tticrolure,«f U exist at ail, bo found in tho trade or intercourse wo oarry on with them. But it haa been shown over and over again, that tho trade with colonics .diflera in no important respect from that with foroigu countries; that units* it be naturally advantageous for both parties, it cannot be for tho mother country lo engage |u it. and that it it bo nainrally advan tageous,It will bo earned on to tho samo or grenier extent wero the colony an indoponuont State. Tho great and glowing intorconrse wo havo eontinuod to keop up with tho U. States ainco they achieved their independence is n practical proof of the truth of what haa now been stated. Our trado with Canada' is, on the other hand, a proof of the nut- chief occasioned by forcing an Intercourse whoro there is no natural aptitudo lor one. While, how ever, tho forcing a trade with colonies is no ad vantage, but the reverse, tho effort to keop them in an unwilling stato of dopendeuco after they aro desirous to ho independent, entails a very heavy expense on tho mother Countries. Our ascendancy in Canada, hi this moment, ia wholly dependant on tho presonco of a largo military force, occasion ing coo wnv nnd another a direct outlay of Tttrlo less than £'J,000,MHI a year, and this enormous di rect and indirect uxponso ia incurred without any equivalent advantage, and with a lull conviction in tho mind of c»ery matt ot sente in the empire that, in sumo ten or twenty years, Canada will be inde pendent, or an integral portion of tho U. States.' Thoro aro swmo objeetions to tho above arrange ment, s.iya the Richmond Dispatch, which do not •com to have occurred to our contomporury of tho Times,or to hi* chief authority, McCullock. Ai- sitming that Greht Britain ia willing to sell out the Canada*, of which wo havo soon no proof, and that the Canada* nro willing to bo sold, which is still more doubtful, it rottmins to ho shown that tho United tastes will consent to buy. That is n con sent which will never ho given, unless the North consents to « simultaneous acquisition of Cuba* with its prosont institutions. Tho lice States al ready havo an overwhelming preponderance in the Houso of Representatives, and a majority in tha Senate, with a prospect of adding twemy or thirty more free States from the present territories in s few years. Yet, even under these circumstnnces, the prospect of adding one more slavo State in Kut»as, creates tho greatest excitement and oppo- sition among Northern free-soilors,whu have raised (ho cry that not auothcr slave State shall ever ho added to toe Union. Do thoy supposo that the South, under such circumstnnces, will consent to tho acquisition ol Canada, or would remain In the confederacy, if that reeking mass of abolition wero added to tho existing freo-soil preponderance ? The ides is too absurd to be thought of. Ship Canal Across the Isthmus of Sun.—M.
