healthy region, ami convenient to the railway,

OF Wo would direct the attention of persons
intending to visit the Virginia Springs, to the ad
vertieemont of tho Virginia Central Railroad, in
this day’a paper.
ISP We learn Irom a friend who has recently
Visited many of the rice plantation! on tho Ogco-
cheo and Altamaha rivers, that the prospect of the
rioe crop in those sections ha* improved very
much within the past two weeks. Tho samo is
true of the crop on Savannah river. The lato co
pious rains have done much good, especially on
thoss plantations where the rice was suffering from
•‘salts." m
The cotton and rrovision crops along the sea
board of Georgia, are also very promising. The
•otton is aomowhat backward, but is doing well.
A friend writes us from Bryan county, that the
lata rains have started the gran to growing as well
as the cotton, and that it is all the planter can do
tokccplt In subjection. Tho provision crops in
lbs Southern portion of Georgia were never more
promising than they are at present.
The same remark will apply to tho crops through
out this Stats. Less land has boon planted in cotton
and more in grain, than in lormer years, and the
prospect of an abundant yield is most encouraging,
•specially of the proviaion crop*, notwithstanding
the backwardness of tho reason.

nee presented by the late Democratic convention
They have not nailed the namo of Hurschell V.
Johnson to their masthead. It ia not our habit to
pry into the affairs of other people, yet we have to
confess ton feeling of curiosity to know tho reason
of our contemporary** unwonted silence.

Editors of tie Snrannah Republican ;
Dias Sir: I see in the last weekly Chronicle If
Sentinel an extract from a letter published in your
paper, la which l am reported aa saying in Augus
ta, on Monday night tho 23tb May, "that it waa
ausceptibleof proof in a court of justice, that the
chief officer ol tho Know Nothings in Georgia
was the son of sn Irishman, who was sold to pay
his passage to this country." What 1 did say, to
the best of my recollection, was literally this: "/
am told it is susceptible of proof in a court of
justiee, that the father of one of the head Knou>
Nothings in Georgia was an Irishman, and teas
told topity his passage to this country*—adding as
correctly observed by the CAronrcJc ^ Sentinel,
"of course / Ante onothing of the fnett^mytelf
I am positively certain 1 said nothing about any
"chief officer," for l never heard even a aurmiso,
who the thief officer is. 1 should like very much
to know.

any gentleman fee’s that be ia entitled, under the
description, "one of tho head Know Nothings,**
to call for an explanation, I will prove tho
troth of what Lsaid, or lake it back. I did not in
tend it as a slur on any one’s lineage, but only as
a reason why we ahosld bo kindly dHposcU jo-
wards Irishmen, instead of persecuting them ; for
they sve the near kith ami kin of many of us.
1 also aaid on the same occasion, that for one, I
Would never hide myself, in a bark room in the
dark hours, to defend those rights and liberiirs
against foreigners, which my ancestors bad wrest
ed from foreigners sword in hand on tiro battle
field<—and I believe in this short letter you have a
pretty full report of all I did say.
I did not dream that l was putting tho " chief ol
the Know Nothings in danger,” and to relieve Ins
fears, please say to him if you know him, that I
have nothing against him, and would ’not harm a
hair of bis head for tbs world.
As an act ol justice, please publish this note.

li is tho honor of Know Nothlngiam. in thissgo
of enlightenment, to rebuko tho wisdom ol our
fathers, by seeking to undermine tho pnnclplo of
religious toleration, to proscribe nion on account of
tho accident of birth, and reduce thorn to tho do-
gradat ion of serfdom, by compelling them to en
dure the burdens, without enjoying tho privileges
and immunities, of the Government. This sense
less cruude—tho offspring of fanaticism, aboli
tion and uemagogueiam—challenges tho co-opera
tion o| every true friend of tho Constitution to de
feat and rebuke it. It ia fraught with consequences
tho most dangerous; and ita triumph will bo the
signal for riot, bloodshed and revolution.
Tho chiof plank In the structure erected at Mil-
lodgevlilo Is what ia known as tho Fourth Roaolu-
lion of the Georgia Platform. That platform waa
adopted lo 1850, by a solemn convention of tha
People of Georgia, and containod a pledgo that
tho State would resist certain wrongs therein onu
niorated, oven to a disruption of tho Union. Tho
convention was composed almost exclusively of
Union men, Gov. Johnson not being one of them*
but belonging to tho Southern Rights parly.
Many of our roadors will remember that, when
tho Platform of I860 had been adopted, and tho
convention had adjourned, or was about adjourn,
mg, Gov. Johnson was aakod what he thought ol
it, and that hia only reply was .* "J Aore a contempt
for the whole pack*
In his loiter ot acceptance, ho now informa us
that he has "carefully examined the resolutions"
adopted by tho late Democratic convention—one
of which ia tho fourth resolution of tho Georgia
Platform—and that ho "cordially approves them."
He nys: "Tiijy are eminently ‘suited to toe

waa originally adapted, (1850) he not only con*
ordered It o( no account, but giving way to hit has
ty and bitter temper, he denounced those who
framed it, and visited his contempt upon "tho whole
pack."
Now, our reason for recalling this incident in
the file of his Excellency, is, to ask the pooplo of
Georgia whether thoy are ready lo cast their suf
frages for a candidate who denounces a certain
policy at on® time, and at another says ho "cordi
ally" approves of it I Is consistency a reality or
a figment of tho imagination t II he was right
in i860, is ho not wrong now f and if he ia right
now, was he'not wrong then T Do principles
change with the ifionn, or aro they real, substantial,
abiding I Above all, will Union men in 1855 kiss
tho foot that spurned them in 1850 ? Will honest
Southern Rights men, who believed the resolutions
ol I860 fell short of the exigencies of th* case,
longer follow tho lend of one who now exhausts
the vocabulary oi pancgjric in hia eulogium upun
those resolutions t
Iiot this is not all. True to his bitter, implaca
ble nature, Gov. Johns m denounces the American
party a* "conspir atois"—"the offspring of fanati
cism, abolition and dnmjgogueism," and says its
triumph will "bo tho signal fur riot, bluoH-shcd
and revolution." Having on a former occasion
expressed hi* contempt for a largo majority of the
people ul.tnu Siaio, he now stigmatises another
large and rcspcctablo portion in terms little ahurt
of treason.
Who is Hcrschull V. Johnson, that ho should
thus pour out the phial of hia wrath upun men as
good and as truo as himself 7 IDs tho' Almighty
Commissioned him to sit in judgment upAi hia fel

Ho it a man of ability and high political position,
but w« have yet to learn that this gives him the
right to impugn tho mntitea of his pours, and to
denounce them in terms of vilification which, if
■run, ought to call down upon their heads, tho burn
ing indignation of all honest men. Tho people of
Georgia will not tolerate such presumption. Unless
we overrate their spirit and inteliigonce, they will
yet teach their complacent calumniator, that
neither he nor any other man can thus denounce
and stigmatise them with impunity.

lot tho quostion bp ro for rod to tho people, and a
convention called to rovioo the conaiilution and
provido a new one, if tho old ono wilt not answer
the purpose. It Is vory truo that tho preoctit com
dilution waa framed by wire and prsoliesl men,at
the cloou o[ the Revolutionary war, when every
faculty ol iholra was in full play, and llioir wits
roused to thu utmost dogroe. But at the same
timo tho country then contained but throo mill inns
of pooplo. Tboir inieroata wore of far leas tnagni
tudo and less exciting than ours. Wo now count
ovor twenty-five millions and thirty-one States —
Hence our circumstances are very different from
whal they were at the time tho present constitu
tion waa adopted.
Uuloss the elavery question is disposed of in eomo
practical friendly way, by a reviaion ol tho consti
tutlun, and adaptod to tho growth and increase of
tho country, angry feelings arc sure to arise, aliena
tion will tsko place between the North and tho
South, and the ultimate result will fw Insurrection
and civil war. Hcnco the proposal we havo heard,
il tho difficulty cannot bo sullied in any other wuy,
to call a new convention of the States and form a
now constitution.' If the roprcacntatlves of iho
various States cannot agreo upon a compromise
that will sutt tho present time and givo a promise
of durability, then tho North and thu South had
far better soparato amicably, and urganiioseparate
republics with separate governments.
Ono thins is certain—tho adoption of thia lino of
policy would compel real patriots and buainrse
men to reflect on tho approaching crisis. The
mere opheinorel politicians who have used this
slavery question for their private corrupt purposes
would ho floored and thrown overboard.
It is absurd to expect that the Ireo States can
uvur bo pro-slavery, or Ihu slave Slates anti-alnvo
ry. Such a thing is ss utterly impossible as that a
Catholic will undertnko a defenco ol Protoatarn-
lam or « Presbyterian of Episcopacy. The two old
parties lung acted on thv principle of dragooning
tho North and the South into an apparent uni
formity of sentiroont on the subject, and the conao-
quenco has been that they are now both disorganiz
ed and ruined.
Il any such plan ae this could be adopted, the
parly might bo completely organised, and with
pro-slavery principles in the South and anti-slavery
principles in the North, might ga into tho noil
State and Presidential elections—leaving it to tho
meeting of Congress or to tha national convention
to bo cal*od for the purpose, to settle tbe question
ol slavery forever.
