land, in an assembly ot hie'nobility, knelt at the
fact of Fandulph, the Pope's legate, and resigned
hia crown into his hands, and making an oath of

was nothing more than monarch of a email terri
tory in Italy when, having found milder meant
ineffectual for the extinction of hercay among the
Albigenaea, ho preached a cruaado against (hem,
and half a million of warriors from France, Ger
many, and Italy were led by Simon do Montfort
against these so called hen tics. Languedoc in
France, a beautiful and flouriahing country, waa
laid waste, and beoamo a deaeri, its ciiiea burned
and its inhabitants swept sway with tho aword.
When Lavaur waa taken by atorm, four hundred
were burned alivo. At tho taking of Bexioro, sixty
thousand citizona were slain. This crusnde waa
accompanied by the inquisition, and the historian
ol the war, Benedict, claims lor Dominic, one of
tho crusading missionaries, tho honor ot being its
founder. Dommio is to this day a saint in the
Romish calendar, and no pontiff or council has
ever condemned the inquisition. Cardinal Bellar-
mine contends lhat the Apostle* only abstained
from calling tho secular arm to thoir aid, bccauso
there were in that day no Christian princes. In
tho Low Countries, the Duke ol Alva boasted of
having, in aix weeka, caused the execution of eigh
teen thousand for the crime or Protostanifrrn.
Paolo reckons the number ol those who were mas
sacred in tbo Nuthotlands, on account of religion,
to amount, in a few years, to fifty thousand ; while
Grotiua raises tho iiat ol (ho Belgian martyrs to a
hundred thuuiaml. In tho time ui Philip II. of
Spain, thirty-eight of the Spanish nobility were
burned at the stake for heresy, Tho massacre of
Mermdal in France, almost extirpated the Wal-
denae#, and waa followed in 1562 by that of Orange,
conducted against the Prides'ant#. and in 4572 by
tho wull known massacre of St. Bartholomew, in
which the lowest estimate of the slain is forty
thousand. An Austrian emperor declar'd it to bo
better for a country to bo a wilderness, than to be
filled with heretics. Among tho losti«iuos held at
the coronation ol oiio of the Bourbon Kings ol Spain
wa* an auto de fi, in which five heretics were
burned.
Thouaanda «,f examples such a* the above might
be given, iut I thir.k I have mado It sufficiently
evident that tho Pope may bo a vory insigniiicant
monarch of small territories, and yet Ins temporal
influence, in an indirect way, over distant coun
tries* be ▼**y ■nit much lo be ureaded.
Jn all these ca-t-a his so-called spiritual influence,
over Homan Catholics really comprehended a
temporal power, to that, through them, when
Kings ot administrators of the ictnpor. I govern
ment, he employed the secular arm for purposes ol
persecution.
But, »»y people, all these atrocities can never be
repeated. Tho human race hat progressed and the
general enlightenment ol tho world ins caused
such airocuies t-- be regarded wiih horror 1 have
as much confidence in the general enlightenment
and progress or the race as anybody, but my confi
dence is grounded on the fact, that tho raco hns
beoii so 'orrihly warned by Its past history, lhat it
must tee the danger. I do not thi' k that human
nature hns radically changed, and I do not bclicvu
the results of this progress aro to bo secured by
crying " peace, pence, when there i> no peace."—
Surely, surely, in view of the horrible pass through
whic h the race haa passed, ono must think it safest
io err on the side of too great watchfulness, lest
wo fall back on tboso errors. Now the influence
winch the Pojk» exerted in difiarent European coun*
tries is precisely tho sort of inflm-nco which tho
Protestants in this country wish to keep him from
using hero.
That tho Pope docs now, In tnis country, exercise
some such influence over Unman Catholic slavery
plain. If Homan Catholics never allow their re
ligion to influence their votes, how happens it that
what is called the Catholic vote is *o prominent,
and that Roman Oath dies alwaya vote together I
Who ever heard politicians talk about securing the
Methodist, or the Baptist, or the Presbyterian vote!
•Everybody knows that Methodists never make it
a point to vote together, and (ho reason is evident:
the Methodist Church, aa a body, has no object* to
bo gained by it. I trust we shall in iuturo hear ol
a Protostant Vote ; but bo it noted, had wo never
hoard bcloro hand of a Catholic vote, we should
ant have heard of a Protestant voto. Proteatania
organized for aolf defence because Catholics had
already organized for attack. Long hnlore the
progress of the Native American party had led to
rhis attempt' d organization of Protestants for self-
defence, ft was a noticeable fact, that if a candidate
had, «n any occasion of his lifo, expressed an
opinion derogatory to Romanism, however that

being sent foward as rapidly aa possible.
Tbo Alabama river*, and Ihe tributaries to the

cording to recent advices, from five to fifteen feet.
We may expect, theroforo, that the cotton re

that tho land in cotton la from 10 to 15 per ct. less in

the steamboats lasac Scott and Charles Hartridge

presume that tho same demand for money existed
