It will be seen that the National American ton*
vention el Phllsdelnhln baa Adopted the national
platform or the subject of tlmry reported by a
majority of the oommlttee, and that 99 oat of the
84 Northern de]«|ctee Ir attendance have with*
drawn (torn the convention.
Thin is the beet thing, •• well for the party, the
Ueloe end the South, that ooeld have happened.
The order ie thee purged of lie cnliralavery end
Uoeooaablf elements. The rank fungus of aboil*
tlenlim has been cut off, nod the party is left
■troeger than it was before. The South, even ep*
on n satisfactory platform, ooeld never have co*
operated In \ho attainment of national objects,
with such malcontents as Wilson and his Mesas*
chusstts folioware. Thqy ware millstones about
ths necke of national man evtrywhsro, drawing
thsm down to certain death.
The 91 National men from the North, who re
mained in the convention, and who abtds by the
platform, are the representatives oi the conservative
and loyal sentiment of ihe Iras States. These mon
will encounter the bores opposition of the party
in Massachusetts, and of Seward, Greoly, John
Van Burcn, and the present imbecile administra
tion at Washington. Every effort will bemado
by their opponents, both at tha North and tho
South, to raUreprotent them and to under
rate their strength. Hut with tho assistance of
the wholo American order and or national
men at the South, backed by tho States of
New York, I'onneylvsnta, New Jersey, And por-
haps Connecticut, Vermont and Illinois, they will
be able to organito a party for tho ensuing Prtsl*
dooitaUlootion, which may defy all opposition.
With euch n platform ae that adopted, and a suits
ble candidate, it will bo an easy matter for New
Yotk, Pennsylvania and tho Southern Stales, lo
carry the election.
We repeat, that tho Convention has done wnll
to take a position which would drivo from tho
party these distutbers of the public peace. Llko
strong man purged of disease, it will gain fresh
strength and renewed hoalth.
The following ie the Platform adopted upon
the slavory question:
Resolved, That tho Amerioan party, having
arisen upon tho ruins and in despite of the opposi
tion of the whig and democratic parties, cannot bo
held in any manner responsible for tho obnoxious
acts or violated pledges of either} that tho system
atic agitation of tho slavery question by thoso par
ties has elovated sectional hostility into a positive
element oi political (rawer, and brought our Insti
tutions into peril. It has, therefore, become tho
imperative duty of the American party to inter*
pose lor the purpose of giving peace to tho country
and perpetuity to tho Union} that, aa experience
haa shown, it is impossible to reconcile opinions
so 4-xtremo as those which separato the disputants;
and, astheru eon be no dishonor in submitting to
the laws, the National Council has doemoa it the
best guarantee of common justice and of (uturo
peace lo abide by and maintain Ihe oxi’ting laws
upon the subject of slavery, as a final and conclu
sive settlement of that subject in spirit and in sub-
stanco.
Resolved, That, regarding it tho highest duty to
avow these opinions, upon a subject so important,
in distinct and unequivocal terms, it in hereby du*
dared, as (he aeuse o( this National Council, that
Congress possesses no power under tho constitu
tion to legislate upon the subject oi slavery in tho
States, or to excludo any State from admission in
to the Union because her constitution does or docs
not recognise the institution ol slavery ns a pail
oi her social system, and expressly pretormitting
any expressions of opinion upon the power ol Con
gress to establish or prohibit slavery in any territo-
E . It is the sense of this National Council, that
ingress ought not to legislate upon the subject ol
slaver, within tho Territories of the United Slates,
and that any inicr!cr«-nce ol Congress with slavery
as it exists in the District of Columbia, would bo
a violation ol tho spirit and iniontion ol tho coin-
t act l»y which tho State of Maryland ceded tho
hstriol to the United States, and a broach of the
national faith.

At a rocont Siato convention of the Know

form was unanimously agreed to:
WherouL wo, tho delegates ol tho American
party of Punnsylvania, io convention met, at
Harrisburg, in obedience to tho call of the Btnto
Executive Coinmlttoo, do hereby declare our per

constitution oftheUnitod States as our political
principles and tho laws of the sattio, for our gov

Rrsolved, That we believe tho only mm, safe

tho naturalisation laws should be repealed, so that
only Americans born (or persons horotoforo natural
ised) Ira entitled lo the sacred right ol suffrage or to
hold ofheo—that our general system of public edu
cation should not omy be fostered and perfected,
but well guarded against the sworn enemies of mo*

for national, Siato and municipal candiuatos for
office should be public, and that, under the consti
tution ol -rar country, It is and ought to bo tho right
of each State to pass upon ita own local institu
tions, without encroaching upon Iho constitutional
rights ol other Mates.
Resolved, That, with the foregoing as our politi

Americans, "knowing no North, no South, no
