But, notwithstanding^ Mr. Stephens’ prnnun-

It evidently fears a consummation will bo brought
about through the agency of the order, which /ie
aptuohotuL is difficult, it not impossible—namely’,
a luaion, or rather an obliteration; of sectional ani
mosities upon one common, patriotic, national
ground. Speaking ol his totter, to winch wo have

that thu American order, North and South, will be

With such no assurance it strikos us Mr. Stephens,

opinion* and his private conduct had alienated
many of his acquaintances, Jea«y Irewars, with
her brother and*i«ter, becamo the more unremit
ting and constant intireir friendship.
With such opportunities of judging of tire poet's
sentiment* ami character, and herself eminently
qualified, hy her strong religious opinions and
menial capability, to speak on such a subject, it
become* interesting to know that "Jessy Irewars
licquciilly stated that there never w«i a man more
maligned than the poet, and that especially he w a*
by no mean* so intemperate a* he wa* said to ho.”
She visited hi* death bed both by night and day,
ami scorned tbo idea that the poet died a sceptic.
"He died," sire said, "in tho faith of a Christian."
At lire poet's death Jessy irewars possessed a great
mnny manuscripts and letters of lire poet. These
she gave to Dr. Maxwell, of Dumfries, to be for
warded to Dr. Currlu lor tho biography, and it waa
often n cause of great regret to her that nono of
them were returned.
She possessed tho MSS. of "The It'uo-eyed
Lame," two vetses on the back of a hill b*r an ex
hibition of wild boasts i* Humphries, and a pre
sentation copy ol Johnson's Miscellany, with ver
ses in the handwriting of tho pod. Two large
glasses, referred to in "Tho Lite of the I’oct," on
which be wrote miw verves with n diamond, were
unfortunately broken into a thousand pieces hy the
carelessness of lire servant who w.v. carrying them
from one house to another in Dumfries. Few havu
lived morn respected nnd beloved than Jessy Le
nta, nnd so long n* the human heart Ire
