He died Ht his residence, in this city, a few minutes alisr uvo o' clock yesterday afternoon, afier a long and painful illncea, aged aixty-fivo year*. Some sixteen months since, the deceased re ceived severe injuries front a fall, subsequent to which, while in the porlorniance of hia professional duties, he waa attacked with yellow lever. On his recovery, he again put hia hands to thu plough, and turned not back until the epidemic had disap peared from the city. Enfeebled by disease und exhausted by hia labors, but little strength was left to carry him through tho winter, and whon Spring came he suffered a still further prostration from hemorthage ol tho lunga, which wan succeeded with fearlul rapidity by similar attacks. He continued to sink until yesterday sltcrnoon, when he Ivil gently to sleep in tho bosom o| his fumily. Dr- Habersham belonged to nnn of tho oldest and most respectable families in tho Statu. Hia ancestors wero ol that heroic band who ac companied Oglethorpe to these shores and assisted in layingtho foundations of the Colony ol Georgia on the apot where he breathed his I t.Eminent in hia profession, courteous in his manners, geninl in his nature, and generous in hia sentiments, liu carries with him down into the gravo thu rospeut and regrets ol all wboknuw him. Wo aasuro them we do not intend to make a chargo, or indito a word that would grate upon the ear ol tho moot fastidious among them. Wo intend to epoak of the Roman Empire, of Roman cilisona, and what little we intend to nay shall not touch prophet, prieet or king of the Papal dynaety, though these, were we to philosophise on the picturo wo intend to preeont, might bo held up as roaponaiblo lor much of both ita ground-work and coloring Our worthy associato hits recently accomplished tho wonderful lent of a voyage to Sevastopol and back, all in a day. That ia a mero " circum - Btanco." Wo have achiuvod, during the present week, a atill moro wuudurlul tr'emph: Wo havo inadu a trip to Romo, in a singlo night, and had enough ol spare timo to ettjoy our usual comple ment of “oaturo's awoul restorer.” We have done oven more: We have visited the Eternal City and its depondoncica, within a few hour*, at two sepa rate periods of ita oxiatence, themselvce ovor two thousand years apart, and, unlike our etoam-sped associate, all on foot! This looks paradoxical, but it is oven so, as will more fully appear. A few evenings sinco wo sauntorod up to tho AthoiiBum, arrived in the midst of a play, and lound oursolvos in tho prosonco of Roman Sena tors, decemviri and lietors. The Tribune was there ; Claudius waa thoro and upon it, dispensing tho borrowod laws of Solon and tho legislators of Groeco. There was Rome—Romo tho mistross of tho world, powerful abroad, though rent by faction at homo—Romo when Palriuian arrogance quailed, and the pcoplo triumphed in tho Tribunes,—Romo when a Virginiua led his armies, and tho proud titlo of "Roman Citizen" loll upon tho ear of kings with awo, and was a shield and buckler to tho man who boro it—when public virtuo ruled as law, and a woman’s wrongs cost tbe Stato its head—that was Rome—as aho tana. Variety is tho spice of life—so the enmo even ing lound us,—for a moment only, we protest—at Armory Hall. There, too, was Nome, tho same for which Virginiua blod and Virgil sung; yet Romo, in the ovoning of hor days, shorn of her power, struggling on—nay, hardly a struggle—with imbe cility, dotage, and degeneracy, tho pity and the ecorn of all mankind. The sword of Virgintus, Marius, and Lucullus, havo been moltun into chains for an ignoble race ;—tho cloquenco of Cicoro and Ctusar changed to thu tenors and trebles ol an op- craiic chorus, and the pearly toga of Virginia, nil emblem of the spotless purity within, gives place to the rags ol tho mendicant, or tho tawdry attire ut the wnnton. The genius that had reared to tho skies the Coliseum and the I ompleE of the Cssars, is now whittling tho lava of Vesuvius into trinkets and emailing-butties, or up to ita elbows in clay and alabaster, to tickle tho fancies of the nursery. Thus, wo hnvo scon Romo—Romo as sho was, and Romo ns she is. A'aa! "how aro the mighty (alien !’’ \V ith u sigh for hor fate, and a prayer lor hor luturc, the record ol our journeyinga ia brought to a cloau. Wiiat the War Costs Us—Rise in the Price of "Materials.”—Tho pretty little gnmo winch is now being played by the grout Europeun Powers costs ovurybody something, not only thoro but horo. Many articles of which immonso quantities aro wasted in war. aro used for the arta of poaco, und every manufacturer suffers from tho extra demand, tho consequent limited supply and increased price. In tho articles of saltpotrojead, gunpowder, naval stores, hemp, and some kinds ol iron, the advance in prices sinco tho war broke out lias been an nve- •ago of thirty por cent. Saltpetre has advanced •rom six to fourteen cents pur pound, and nono is to bo had ut tho latter figuro. For a long time our markeis havo been active on Europoan ac count, and a great deni of saltpetro comas horo font India, in|order that it may bo ro-shipped to German ports. Sumo shipments have arrived hero and been immediately ro shipped to England. Gunpowder, lor shipping, which was worth ton rents |K*r pound whon the war broko out, hns ad vanced to twenty, and tho market is close. Galena load hns gone up a cent a pound sinco 1953, and tho riso in ouvul stores is ubout twenty-live per cent. If the war should cominuo several years onger it may take all tho inflammables nnd com bustibles out of the country.
