To this thought it may well lie lidded, that a mother still more resembles the Great Father of U9 all, iu tho untiring natiiro of her love, and tho bouutcousucss of her goodness.— It is seldom indeed thnt she enn duuy u request; and when once her maternal feelings arc aroused, no labor Is too onerous for her—no distance too great, to discourage her. The mother of tho story has given to the world a bcuutiful example of ma ternal lovo. Though poor, and unbufriomlcd, she has travelled many huudruds of miles—almost tho length of the Union—to sec, to aid and to comfort of plank of hard wood, and n strung iron kuife with thick blade and blunt edge. It may here be remarked that the " iodel” is not much known in level countries. It is brought out in alphinc re gions, where it is sweetly echoed back from some Grecian Archlpuligo. Its one nud only excellence is a tin*-* harbor on tho uortlicrn side. Tho rest of it consists of inoui.tnins and volcanic forinution, producing nothing but sulphur, vitriol, nnd alum, —too sterile for nuch vegetation, ami altogether too unhealthy for people to livo in. Speaking of the Montgomery nnd West Point Railroad, tho writer says t "Our engagements arc 5.000 bales of cotton ** ahead, for your plncc nnd Charleston, nnd I be- “ lieve, if wo could extend our Road to Selma, it " would draw cotton from tho banks of the Toin- "bigbeo, and we should send you 100.000 bales *• annually. Such an extension " would givo the Central Rond the heaviest bind. ness of any Road in the Southern part of the 14 United States.” Tho foregoing extrnct sponk? for itself, nnd de monstrates the soundness of the policy which led i Savannah to form a connection with Columbus nnd Montgomery. The advantages of this connection, it would appear, may be still further increased by an extension from Montgomery to Selma—a con summation devoutly to bo wished fur. difficulty. Despite, therefore, the popular clamor against tho abuse of the pardoning power. I for one, ntn satisfied, that in this case it was rightly exercised. It is very easy for private individuals to cry out, when they are uot concerned. But put these same individuals on oath, on conscience, on justice and humanity, nnd they will find it no easy matter to do what they call "duty." For my own part. I speak without reference to this case, which, in my opinion, involved not mercy but justice: for own part, I say. I love to see mercy sometimes In the year 1824, tho Emperor Alexander of Ilussiu, in passing through this valley, dined with n Count Tonhoff, whoso house is on tho opposite street from the hotel.
