Prrr.tTEK. bit not SrBDCED.—The Americans of the Eighth District are fur from being terrific by their late defeat, which was accomplished by an extraordinary combination against them of friends and foes. They arc agaiu sounding the trumpet and rallying anew for another contest, it is to be hoped, upon a mo auspicious field. We 4re gratified to sec that meetings have l^cen held in Warren and Lincoln, and full delegations ap pointed to the MiUedgcvillo Convention. Among those recorded as Wing present, we recognize many of the most worthy and substantial citizens of those cjuntics. Let our friends press forward and never be discouraged by past di«asters. We Lave suffer- fed a temporary defeat in the first battle through the herculean efforts of tbe politicians, and the most unfair and outrageous ui:‘representations of our principles and objects. The p-cojde may be deceived tor a time, but wheretruth will finally pre vail, they can never remain in their blindness.— When the great American doctrines of self-preserva tion and self-government shall have Wen properly understood by the freo people of this country, the day of their triumph wiil have dawned ; and it will be a -lay of shame to the miserable slanders of u religions persecution " and “ treason to the Con- ititation,” by which we have Wen defeated. Ttoo “Washington Organ" aud the Slavery (iueatlon. In a late number of the Washinat'-n Organ, (which, eo far as we know, is the self-consiiuteu national organ of the American party) we fiud aotno remarkable, and we think, very ur.-afe positions upon the slavery issue. We should be doing in justice to the southern wing of the party, and at the same time deceive the Organ, did we fail to no- t ee them. A little history mnv he necessary for a proper understanding of the progressive rteps by wh'- h that journal has arrived it its present con- elusions. tor some time, and until very recently, Mr. B irwell, of Virginia, an able writer and true man. Las Won at the helm of the Organ’s affairs, ft be came necessary, for -umc cause to us unknown, but of which we huve our opinion, for that gentleman tu retire, and upon that evunt its present editor, Judge Ellis, succeeded to his place. The next thing we hear of the Organ is that it has entered the lists as a competitor for the printing of the House of Representatives, and coincident with that movemout the public is favored with an editorial article upon national politic.*, and tbe American party with certain advice upon the slavery ques- tio-i, to be taken in the event they desire to pre serve their national organization, or, (which we have no doubt was a matter of equal moment to the writer, and the real meaning of the article) to elect the Organ to a share of the public plunder! Be this as it may, we Wive only to do with the opin ions of the editor as they affect the party for which he presumes to speak. The article alluded to is lengthy, and lest we tire the reader wo present the following extract which may be said to embody tbe substance of tbe whole: "We hold it to W nn unpcniaUe proposition that a national party cutinot be formed iu this country, if an uttompt W made to coerce its members to surrender their views and opinions upon local or sectional questions, tbe regulation of which forms no part of the legitimate purposes of any national party. Dijfertmr of opinion upon inch local and national qncttioni muit be tolerated." This extract involves two propositions, neither of wlicb is true. To tLe first wc reply that it is not true that the South requires of any northern man to surrender his private “views and opinions" upon tBe question of slavery. They uiny think as they please upon any question to far as tbe South has a choice, Lot she does oppose any action on the part of the North thnt infringes the constitution and is subversive «f her rights. She bu. asks that our northern bietiircu let us al- lie, und that they pledge thetuselvg*, not to change their opinions, but to abst-in from any interference wiib the existing settlement of fu« slavery questiou. This is us little as we could oak ; it is reasonable, it is just; we deiiand it, and are resolved to submit to nothing 1. st The T welfib arti ole of the l’kiladeiph ia Platform meets the case. Let our American brethren at the North .plant themselves oa that, or prepare for the tttai alienation and hostility of the southern wing of the party. We sj>enk plainly, for the time has arrived when wc should understand each other, and look ibis question honestly iu the fucc. Har'-ng disposed of the Organ's first proposi tion, the recoud i» easily overthrown, as it relies upon a misrepresentation of the South as it* only support. If the rights of the Southern people to an equal participation iu the common property of the nation be nothing; if the equality of the South- * u Stateii aseonstitncnOparU of the Fedor, i Union be a delusion ; if our qmet and freedom from per petual ouuoy aucc? at the hands of funnies and fiols be an unreasonable cxiu-tiun, then is tbe Or gan right when it soys that slavery is not a “legit imate" question for any uaiionul party, and that tbe south should unite with her cucmica n*. well ns with her friends when the spoils are at stake. Thu man who takes such a position is cither ignorant of what is right, or would sell his country to pro mote his private ends. In either contingency, he is unfit to be trusted ns a sentinel over the rights and honor of a free people.
