r-W*A singular fact bus just been brought to
light in London, iu regard to gas meters, which
w ill interest the people of Savannah, especially at
tic* time when there is much complaint of the
quality of the'gas furnished by the Savannah Gas
Company. A careful examination of the gas
works in Loudon has established the fact, that “the
lower the quality of the gas, tho greater the velo
city with which it flows tiirough the meter—that
is, the quantity registered is increased, in proper- .
tion as the quality is deteriorated." Thus, by the
simple prove.*.* of ,-upplyiug an inferior article, the
bill- of the consumer may be t.iade larger, al
though he burn? the gas no longer than before,
and the iueomeof the company considerably oug- ;
men ted, without any corresponding augmentation
of the actual cost --f production.
The inferior quality of the gas now furnished in
Savsnneh i> the n suit, wc presume, of the unsuit- '
able no** of the coal. If this were accidental, con
sumers would have no cause of dissatisfaction, but
as a little care would in-urc a good article of coal,
and consequently a good article of gas, they have
ample reason to complain.
The small number of Gas consumers needful to
make the business of supplying gas profitable, -
i- shown by the fact that the smallest towns at the
North have now their gas works; and it is just an
nounced that n Philadelphia gentleman offers to;
erect them in the village of Edgartuwn. Massaehu- j
