keeping up the impre«.-ion that the salarie

vastly important, he must be permitted to ludd

duly also, to show that the College was in no
danger of suffering seriously from tbe occasional
resignation of an officer—that good and competent
men could he obtained for our salaries, and that it
might even ho nn advantage at times for an officer
to retire. In airing some reasons for this assertion,
the Dr. supposes I intended, covertly, to insinuate
that his resignation might l>c u positive benefit to
the College. I stated distinctly, that my object
was not to injure the feelings of any one. The
arks were made to sustain a general proposition,

referred, first to lho Prudential Com

unanimously decided against him. The whole of
my offending in this matter was, tlint I would not
consent for Dr. J. to omit what I knew tlie Trus
tees considered his duly, and I believed wa* fur
the interest of the College. Dr. Jones is the
brother in law of Professor Mel’iiy, ami the eousin

the Hoard, after Dr. Jones, as they any, wa* *o
badly treated by me, Dr. J. LnCootc’* brother is
elected to till Dr. Jones’ place, ami to he associa
ted with ine. And the next year another Protestor
was to be elected, urn! the brother-in-law of Dr.

College had become a somewhat fuiiiily concern,
and that for luo to oppose the inters! or wishes of
thi* clique wms high treason.
Prof. Seherb is next appealed l<>. He never wn*
hvreuny thing but ii teacher of Modern Languages,
had Ho connection with the Faculty, was utterly
unworthy of being connected with any institution—
as any one may know by inquiring tat the Univer
sity of Alabama, nud ascertaining with what con
tempt he was treated by students, officers nud
trustees, lie suddenly, and in the grossest man
ner, lutault.-d me in lho preseuco of the Faculty,
when I uttered substantially the expression at
tributed to me, and immediately made the apology
staled. Hut I did not ray 1 would do it agaiu.—
I might have said, ami probably did say, that
under oxn-tly the same circumstance*. I feared I
might: ami if any man. saint or sinner, can feel
■ onfideiit that he would Uot, helms reason, I think,
at least "to take heed."
Dr. Irt-l’onte’s last witness is Professor (now
