The Administration In Gtsr|la<
During the late canvass in this State tha demo
cratic organs did not dare to give out a single
whimper about the Administration. For reason*
best known to themselves—bnt of which wc have
a shrewd suspicion—it was passed over tub tilt
tio : and though often attacked, and brought to the
bar of public opinion for iu inefficiency and dupli- :
city, it had no advocate, no friend or apologist be
fore a Ooorgia tribunal. This no one will have the '
hardihood to deny.
Recently, however, the party baa become bolder. ,
No election bwing on band, and other circumstances
favoring, if not prompting, a few of our democratic
cotemporaries have ventured cautiously to insinuate I
a word in behalf of their fnllen chief. Some have j
gene so far a* to say. Mr. Pierce has made a “good ,
president” and proved himself “a true friend of the i
Eolith,” but in every instance it has been said in a j
heartless sort of manner, and, m it ware, with a
cautious casting around of the eye as if to see if j

I knew him best, he might have been some sixty
year* of age, tall, robust, with n fine head, white
fit snow, eyes twiukling with fun, but with no re-

aquiline uose. His favorite newspaper was the
London Times, aud yet he was never beard to make
the must reuiuto allusion to his own country, or his
own family.
“None saw him hut to love him,
None uarnrd him Inn to praise."
“Uncle Iliruin" was evidently a Bachelor, and
many a maiden and widow wondered at his living
uloue, with no inmates of his household but his
servants. He was wbut some people call a charac

own. and tinged with the most amiable eccentricity.
What be believed, he expressed, with the most up
right and downright conviction, without asking
how bit opinion squared with the convictions of
other people, or troubling hiuifclfin the least, with
their popularity. He was the kindest heurted man
in the world, us honest as the day was loug, and
as tru* as steel. “His words were bonds and hit
oaths oracles." No tuan in the village ever paid a
dollar to a lawyer, who first consulted him, and
no widow or orphan ever regretted trusting their
all in his hands. Uucle Hiram was it is
