The Production of Iron.
In tho days of Alexander n lump of Iron weigh
ing forty pounds was considered a valunblo pieco
of properly. It will, porhops, surprlsu thoso who
lmvo given tho subject hut little attention, to find
thnt the production and manufacture of iron are
entirely tho result of modem civilization. But
little mure than a century ago, tho total produc
tion of tho inotul in England did not exceed 17,-
350 tons; nnd iu tho wholo of Europe tho product
was not more than 100,000 tons, of which 00,000
tons woro contributed by Sweden and Russia.—
Evon this limited umnufuuturo enured such n con
sumption of wood, thnt, bnt for tho discovery of
Dudley, who substituted tho ininornl coal for ehur-
coul, it must havo been considerably diminished.
Tho invention of tho process of puddling by Hen
ry Cort, followed In 1783. Tho wondorl'ul results
of this discovery may ho thus summed up, and
for those facts it is duo that wo should nckuowl-
edgo our indobloduess to n paper recently prepar
ed by A. R. Ilowitt, on the statistics and geogra
phy of tho production of iron. In 1782 tho total
quantity of British hammered iron exported did
not exceed 427 tons. In 1851, the totnl quantity
of pig-iron exportod was 203,071 tons; puddled
anil rolled iron 883,237 tons; to # whieh, If ono-
thivd ho added for wnslo in conversion, tho real
quantity exported will bo 1.177,610 tons—totnl
British irou exported, 1,470,723 tous. During the
last sixty years it is estimated that this invention
of lionry Cort, has snved to tho country £300,000,-
000- sterling, besides feeding nnd clothing four
generations of workmen nnd thoir families, or
more than 600,000 pooplo for sixty yonrs.
Nielson’s invention of tho hot blnst in 1830 had
a marked effect upon production, having doubled
tho production iu a fow years. In 1851 tho total
m:ike4n England reached 3,585.006 tous. This
tremendous product which was uchiovud by tho di
rect labor of 238,000 men, was valued nt $125,-
000,000. But even theso figures, cngpnnus as
thoy may seem, will npponr trivial when wo come
to consider tho gigantic proportion to which tho
iron businoss is yet destined to attain. Tho pre
sent annual production of tho world is sot down
as not exceeding 7,000,000 tons, of which Grant
Britain supplies ratlior more than ono-lmlf. From
1810 to 1855 tho production of Iron increased 7,-
000 per cunt. At tho snmo rates of increase tho
annual make of tho world would roach In a centu
ry .‘rom this, 400,000,000 tonp. But allowing, as
Mr, Hewitt supposes, tho total production to dou
ble only ouco in 20 years, wo will hnvo In 1055,
102,000,000 ns tho product of that year.
Tho miinnlhcturo of iron in tho Uultcd Stales,
notwithstanding tho nlinost boundless extent of
our f took of ore, is yet comparatively small. Our
yeurly product is about 750,000 tonp, nearly ono-
fifth luss than that of Englund. This great dis
parity, howover, is not likely to continue long.—
In England tho most farorablo locations nro al
ready fully occupied, while in tho United States,
tho undeveloped deposits as before stated, hnvo
been scarcely touched. Our ores, says tlio N. Y.
Post, remarking upon tho snmo subject, include
almost every variety found in Europo and some
which lmvo no rival. It is therefore thrown out
us more than n probability, an absolute certainty,
that thu Unitod Statos, stimulated by no unhc'nlthy
or artificial action, but acting in obodionco to tbo
known laws of demand nnd supply, will nt no dis
tant period, not only furnish nil tho iron necessa
ry for homo consumption, but may largely export
to other countries Iho products of its irou depos
its. In tho flnur departments of iron workman
ship wo nro already competing with tho workshops
of England. The importations for tho yenr end
ing Juno, 1855, nmuuhtod to 423,620 tons, nt a
valuation of $15,024,736. It hns boon remarked
as a singular fuct that in tho onrly days of iron
mnking, considerable quantities of irou woro sont
from America to England. In 1770 tho amount
so transported was 7,625 tons, or one-sixth of tlio
ontlro amount importod into Great Britain from
nil qunrtors. Thoro aro now 1,501 iron manufac
tories in tho United Stntos, with an invested capi
tal of $7,416,361.—DuUimore American.

Supper-Table Speeches.—Tho timo was when
tlio supper-tables at convivial festivities woro
spiced with wit, ami afforded a joyous relaxation
from tho dray-horse duties of lifo. That tiino has
gone by, nnd yet not hopelessly so, if those having
tho management of such things will rcnllzo how
completely theso festivuls lmvo swayed from thoir
logitimnto Intent, nnd will uso tboir influcnco in
bringing them back to old paths. Public suppers
u*cd to bo lively; now they are .dull, stupid af
fairs.
A remedy for this dlscnso should bo applied.—
There suppers nro .managed to death. Tlio toast
commltteo concoct their thirteen rogulurs, and,’by
sorlous appointment, designate who shall respond;
and tho business of responding nt suppers Is follow
ed liko tho business of mutes ut lunornls. Any
man familiar with theso things, can guess out be
forehand at lonst ono-hnlf who will muku speeches.
At an editorial suppor in Cincinnati two win
ters’ since, tho tablo mutinied nt 1 o’clock a. ui. at
tho sixth toast. Sovcn speeches were left unspo
ken. At tho bar supper at tho Angler, awliilo
since, tlio lawyers broke over tho formality of tho
programme nnd called for whom they wished. Tho
consequence was a ronring room nnd a good wide
awake timo.
By tbeso set spccclios, which necessarily ranch
into morning, tho guests nro deprived of lionring
strangers who may bo present, to say nothing of
tho many Jokes nnd witty toasts which hnvo no
ohanco of being crowded in. Speech-makers nre
seldom witty; it is impossiblo to study out wit)
and hctico n man, loft to tho impulse und inspi
ration of tho moment, will "get off a good thing”
times without number nt a festival) but if notifi-
cd thnt ho is expected to respond to a particular
toast, will muko a long, prosy speech.
Ono or two speeches nre very well, but wo bo-
