In the hurry of preparing for Saturday’s issue
an answer to the remarks of the Georgian on-the
Main Trunk negotiations, we committed tho verbal
error of stating that tho Main Trunk charter con
ferred “brandling powers,” inatend of reserved
tho power to connect, for the benefit of othiff road*.
Either wilPanswer tho purpose of our argument.
The latter gives both Savannah and Brunswick
the right to connect with the Main Trunk any road
they may think proper to build, and it is utterly
itnmaterial, so far as tho purposes of trade arc
concerned, whether those be independent roads or
extou»ions of alrendy existing lines. In fact, we
are not sure if the former are not preferable, for wo
question the policy of mammoth corporations.
They Lave never failed yet to become n power in

dispute tho democracy of this sentiment.

For several years past tho sugar crop has boon

Louisiana. The severe and long continued cotd <d
the last winter, while't nearly destroyed tho crop

mifchiovnu* insect, and tho oilier causes of disease,
whatever llioy wore. With rare and unimportant
exceptions, tho sued canes now being planted are
in the best possible condition; and, n* an unusually
large quantity of seed has been put up, tho hreudth
of laud planted will exceed that of any previou*
year; mid, with anything like a fair season, more
than mi avurngo crop will surely be made.

Tlia Pretended Senatorial Kloctlon In

Tho mail yesterday furnished us detailed ac-
counts of n very ridiculous proceeding nt Indian-
aptdis on Wednesday. Tliu farce lias been played
out and hus resulted only in tho mention of ono
oat iu tho 8tuto Senate claimed try Mr. Wood, ns
a Democratic member from Clnrko county. Tho
<o.culled joint Convention was held and proceeded
<• tho electron of Fitch and Bright ns United
.'oimtors from Indiana. There wue present in this
pro-tended joint Convcutioo no quorum of cither
branch or of both brandies of tiro Legislature.
There wns trot n quorum of tho whole Legislature
Itectively. There was not a quorum of tha
House of Representative*, and tli>ro vrus not a
pioruin ol the Somite, for the Senate refused to go
mto joint Con vent ion and continued iu separate

tion.
nis protruded election is a gross absurdity.
Kvtii according to the argument* of the Itamo.
rutic Senator*, tu regird to lire decision iu Wood's
a*e on Monday, tiro proceedings of this shimmied
,oi«t Convention ure totally invalid. It was de
clared by the Democrats that tho proceedings of
tiro Senate ill vacating tiro scat of Mr. Wood wore
irregular und invalid bccuiisu there was not a quo-
Him of tho .Somite present, although that fact did
not nppoar upon the records of the Senate directly
nor iudireetly, and tlicso records alone are cmipe-
tent evidence of tiie fact. But the records of Ilia
Senate show (hut there wav no quorum of theNru-
ate iu tho fareiral Joint Convention and also that
the Semite, in its official capacity, us one of tho
branches of tiro Indiana Legislatarc, had nothing
whatever to (Ju with tho election of United States
Senators.
There is no necessity to look fur precedents to
estabUsh tho invalidity nf this pretended election.
The elections of United States.8routers i« an act
of logiiintion. and thare can ho no legislation with-
out the concurrence of both houses constituting the
Legislature, in tide instance tiro Semite did trot
directly nor indirectly concur, und consequently
there hns been no election.
Tho revolutionary ooiiduct of tho Democrats in
tiro Indiann Legislature, their attempt to force nn
eleetioii indctlum-cof all constitutional provisions,
of all laws, nnd of nil cstahlhhcd precedents, even
of those which have hitherto been fixed by tbe
leuders of their own political faith, evince not
only nn utter disregard and recklosviies*for govern
ment, but a desperation which can only be felt by
n declining party. They know full well that their
ill gotten power is runidly waning, nud they are
seeking by every imaginable artifice, in these last
momenta of it* existence, to make tiro most of it.
In tiro hillertievsof their despair, they have passed
the bounds of discretion und have effected nothing
except to make liroiiiiolvei supremely ridiculous.
