We bad the pleasure of un interview yesterday
with Mr. Hnrrough*, one of thu assistant* ol it. S.
Hunter, K*q., in hi* survey of the Okefenokco
Swamp, Toe survey and exploration, it will be
ri'cdloctud, worn authorised hy the Imd Lcgi»lului-o
of Gootglu, with n view of determining npo» the
practicability of the drainage of tlm Swamp. It
will require, perhaps, lour weeks longer for thu
engineer, Mt. Hunter, to coiupleto his labors; yet
enough ha? boon done to establish the fact el thu
feasibility of tho proposed undertaking.
A canal smeii miles in length will connect tho
St. Mary's river at a point two mile* uhove Trader's
Hill, witli thu Okufutiokeo. Along this line there
is u fall of 105 feet from the Swamp to the river,
enough for all thu purposes of drainage.
.Mr. Hunter's party commenced operations near
tho Northern etui of the Swamp, running thence
Southward along tlio Fasturii border. Alter hnv-
ing made perhaps half tho d stance South with hi*
explorations, lie moved round to the West side.
From 11 point called thu “Fockct," lie then struck
across tho Hwninn In it North-Uasterly direction.
Hi* route took him by Floyd'* Island. It is erro-
iieou*ly marked both n* to location mid sir.o on
Homier'* Map. It la placed too far South and K i»t
un the Map, and instead nf being ten mile* long
and three wide ns there represented, is hut two and
11 half mile* long and n half a mile wide. ‘‘Hilly’*
Idaiiil," about two nnd a half miles from thu
••F'icket" is four mile* long nnd one mile wide. It
wu* found to contain 1111 imiiiunce nu miter of deer.
Iu*t(-ad of being impeded by water, one of thu
chief difficulties of the parly in crossing the swamp,
grew out of the want of that Very important ele
ment. They had to sink three wells to obtain a
supply for drinking ami cooking. A* Kiev advanced
toward* the eastern margin the thickness of the
undergrowth ofierud almost insuperable obstacles
to their progress. It became necessary to cut their
way with knifes, ami tlu-y were so much delayed
as to ho in serious danger of starvation—their
supplies having been entirely exhausted.
