with Franco thu vxporta arorix and u halt millions
less than thu impirts, thus oinking it evident that
our commercial relations with England arc more
favorable to us thin our commercial relations with
Franco; and also showing that England is, of all
countries, our best customer. Our exports to Cuba
arc loss titan one-third of our imports, who runs
there should bo an excess on thu other side; and
there would ho, hut for tho almost prohibitory du

With China and Urniil our exports tiro but a
small proportion of thu totul trade. This is owing
less to auy obstructions to coiuuierco than to our
dupundunoo for silks, tens, and coflco upon the

Wo absorb tho greater tiart of tho cnrrylng trade

An unhappy ant) scandalous controversy baa

Jishop residing at Chicago, and tlm French con- !

consequences to (he Papal eburoh in Itnil quarter.
Tho fasts of the case, os we gather them from our
IWNf wmk I
corrsspondMee,from an address and resolutions
adopted at a publie meeting, held recently at
Chicago, aud from tho press, aro substantially as
£0ll<tWS!
Bishop O’Hsgan, upon his appointment to the
dittoes# of.Cbloago, found tho oburob uf Bt. Louis
iu • higblj prosperous state, with a popular and
offloiont pastor, aud a largo congregation, among
whom Wore many Germans and Irish. The pscu-
niary profits of the church, It Is charged In tho ad
dress to whlob wo havo referred, first drew the at-
lantiuu of tho Bishop towards them, and led.tn a
•ories of munaauvre* on his part wbioh resulted in
diverting the revenue* nnd property of thu church
from the hands of tha pastor and congregation
to those of thu Bishop, so that the congregation
(bund themselves iu the end without pastor or
oburoh. >■
The Bishop commenced operations by removing
tho pastor, nnd putting an Irish priest in hi* plnne.
Upon the remonstrances nf tho congregation, he
J iromised to give them n priest who could spenk
heir Intigungo, on condition, however, (but he
•bould not receive into bis church or countenance
there any persons who were nut French. The con
gregation accepted this condition, and endeavored
to fulfill itt but it woa found impossible to prevent
Ibe attendance of Irish and Germans, and the
Bishop, visiting tho priest in person, forbade bim
to exereDo his functions longer In that diocese.—
Tho priest begged to bo a I In we’d to remain with bis
congregation until alter Lent. Tho Bishop said—
So ruub tho address—"I will consent to your ra-
“quest ii you will pay me u hundred dollars.” “I
“will give you tho sum as soon a* I can collect il,
“and will givoyou my nolo for thirty days,” an
swered the priest. “I want tho money cash “do* n,”
said the Bishop,
This sum was paid; but the samo practice' bar
ing been repeated nt thu church, tha priest was
again called upon to explain them. Unwilling to
buy thu right of officiating, a second time, ho re
tired from the contest, leaving the congregation to
battla with the Bishop alone.
Thu lease of thu land ou which tho church nud
tho pastor's homo stood Lolng about to expire, the
congregation wore advisod by thu IL»),<>p to pur
chase a lot elsewhere nnd reuiova the church
thither, and sell the home to help to pay for the
luL This was done; hut tho Bishop insisted, in
addition, that they should purchnse another lot ad
joining their now purchnse. Wo quota trout the
address tho account ol what followed s
“Wo went immediately und bought the lot on
ninety days time. But ho objected to this again,
saying that be would not allow u» to touch the
church, unicss we hnd the whole lot paid for, and
put tlie deed ill his hands, and that the deed should
bo tnado to him privutoly.
“This bad tbo effect desired by the Bishop. We
had collected all tho money that could !.« collected
then iu ottr small congregation; il was impossible
for us to do any inorcut onco, so wo concluded to
gi vo up tho battle. The Bishop then went on, took
tho muney we had sold tho house for, ($ 1,200.) A
Catholic indy, whoso huthund bml bought the
house, lmd subscribed $10o fur removing the
church, provided the Bishop would promise that it
would remain in the bands of the French and at
tended by a French priest. The Bishop proffered
again to that lady tho lie, which he hnd so often
uitorcd to us. every whore even from tho altar,
thnt upon his word of Bishop, it would rctnniu a
French church, nn<l thnt they should havo a French
priest. (This wu shall call lio No, 1.) Hu then
moved thu church to another lot of his own, sent
an Irish priest to officiate iti it, put tho money in
his pocket, nnd made tho congregation, which is
now Irish, pay for the lot, tho moving nnd repair
ing of thu church, utid he takes quarterly tbo
revenues which nre not less than $2,000 u year.
"This ij the way wo have licen swindled of our
church, of thchouso of our priest, nnd of mtr all,
by the tyrant Bishop O'Uegnn; and when n French
priest vi*its our city lio forbids him to address us
in our cherished mother tongue. And this is also
the way that we French Catholics, ns n society,
have been blotted outoftho book of the living!”—
