presented through bibs. They, however, have re
mained silent. In ana case it Is worse than alleftCt,
for we perceive one of those presses has copied a
long article fn ma Tbomssvill# paper, severely
reflecting upob our people, without- taking the
trouble tree to remote the false impression under
which it was written.
We have no authority to speak for the Presi
dent of the Main Trunk Company, having never
been favored with bis views on the subject. We
know something, though, of the sentiments of the
people of Savaunah, and should consider our*
reives remiss in a high duty, did we fell to vindi
cate thorn from mUrcpreeeutaUao,oome from whet
quarter it may.
There is no doubt that tbs present sentiments of
despondency—or we might say, opposition—>f th!
people of Thomas and Lowndes, to the Alain
Trunk project, is the work ot designing men, who
have bccu sent through those counties to create
the impression that the ei y of Savannah desiicd,
from considerations of financial convenience to
herself, to delay the construction of the Main
Trunk Road. The Tbutuasville editorials are
evidently based on such an assumption, and the
refusal of the Main Trunk Directors, In the late
negotiations, to obligato themselves to complete
their road to Thonjasvillu in a specified period of
lime, has been seised bold of at an argument In
proof of the position. This is tho true secret ef
all the present dissatisfaction in that quarter, and
to this point we desire to direct a tingle positive
ictnnrk.
A e shall not say that Mr. Wells, in his 1
peregrinations through that country, lent him*
self t<* the propagation of such a r* port, for we
should be unable to prove it; but ibis we do say,
come from whence it may, so far as the people of
Savannah are concerned, it is utterly destitute of
truth. There i< no such desire on the part of Sa-
vannab. She has the same interest in the earlye
completion of the road as Rrunswick has, and if
the Main Trunk Directors declined to bind them-
selvesunconditi nally to fintsh tho work by aspect.
Red day, they did it to resist an improper demand
upon them, a compliance with which might be*
come imposribic even though they might use the
greatest amount of activity and dilligcnce.—
Such, at least is the sentiment of the people
of Savannah, and wc have no doubt the same

fyndnd, That Francis 8. Edwards be end he te
hereby expelled from the Uouio.
Mr. Edwards remarked (bat be could say honest
ly, and with a clear conscience, that ha never gave
a votcaa any hill which was nut sanctioned by his
Judgment. In bis iutcrcourse with members of
this House, he had unirtrfally sought to be on
terms of friendibid with theta, and if be bad un
wittingly glvou offence, to any one, he asked hla
pardon.
He could say that tbe hours spent bare In assoel-
atlon with gentlemen, were among tbe most agree-
alls of hi* life, and ho should carry with him lulu
his retirement tho conviction that hit bad uever
Bought to do any one an injury. He felt in bis
qwo heart that he had oarer intended to wrung
any main her.
He bad, however, become satisfied, from the
Votes taken in the other eases, that, although
gentlemen on all sides sympathised with him in
hi* position, he could expoct to share no better fate
than the others charged with grave offences. Hi#
answer to the committee having been disregarded,
and the case standing on the testimony of Mr.
Paine alone, hi* owu statement of his innoconcu
availed him nothing. Nor could he at this time
make such explanations as would relieve him from
the effects of Mr. Paine's testimony. He wished,
to relieve his personal friends from the pressure
which had been made upon them in their own im
mediate localities, from all embarrassmont, and
therefore he had determined to resign his scat,
having already informed the Governor of New
York of thnt fact.
On motion of Mr. Ritchie, the resolutions in the
case of Mr. Edwards wore then laid upon tbe
table.
The resolution fur the expulsion of James W.
Sitnonton was then taken up.
3!r. Kelsey said if he had succeeded in obtain
ing tho floor at an early stago in tbetcproceedings
he should have presented his view.* relative to
Ibcso reports, somewhat at length. He now wish
ed simply to remark that the only difference in the-
Select Committee had gone out of contrary opin
ions as to tho proper report# to be made* to iho
House. At this late period of the session he would
ho inexcusable were he lo consume the time of the
House, and unless some friends of Simonton de-
sircil to he heard in his hehttlf, he should content
himself with moving the previous question.
Mr. Sage moved an amendment including Mr.
Triplett in the expuUion resolution.
Mr. Houston wished to exclude all person* en
gaged in tho prosecution of claims from th* floor.
It was but temporary relief, to expel one man and
let (hu hundred others remain.
The .Speaker said no reporter had been admitted
to the floor excepting on condition that he w.i.«
not engaged in the prosecution of clnimr, aud in
every instance without exception, they have re
plied that they were not »o engaged.
Mr. Jones, of Tenn., remarked that the door
keeper should keep out all persons not entitled by
right to the floor.
Tho Speaker replied that tbo door-keeper had
such iiiftructioti#.
Mr. Jones said—If so, the door-keeper ha
enforced th* rule.
Mr. Humphrey Marshall remarked that Vr.
Triplett obtained the right to occupy a reporter's
sent on his re-commeudatlon, but bo had not exer
cised the privilege.
Mr. Burnett said, thnt a# Simonton had been
heard iu his defence, Mr. Triplett should bare the
•am* right.
The resolution expelling Simonton and Triplett
from the floor of the House as reporters, was then
adopted.

An Atrato shin canal ia do new projeoL It long
sinee attracted tbe attention of Humboldt, and at
first etenee the only question of Interest iv, wbnt
additional light is Mr. Kelley prepared tu throw on
e very old subject ? We are distinctly informed,
however, that bis tenn entirely "new route,” ex
celling all others, previously projected, in Its
practicability. It commences on tha Atlantia
side in tbe Ray of Candelaria—thence ascend-
Ing the Atrato sixty.throe miles to its June,
turn with the Truando. This whole distance, ex
cept at the month of the Atrato, tbe depth of water
is no where less than forty.seren feet, with a chan,
nel varying from 350 to 1,000 yards. From th*
junetion, tb* proposed canal follows along the bed
of Truandn, which can easily ho deepened by
means of dredging machines, a distance of thirty*
eight miles, thence straight across the country,
tunnelling the Cordilleras, to "Kelley’s Inlet,” a
further diatanco of twenty-four miles, making in
all 125 miles from the waters of tbe Atlantia to the
Pacific shores, half tbe distance, however, being
already cut by the band of nature. Tho canal is
lo bo of rufficient capacity to pass abreast from
sea to vea two or tbe largest class ocean steamers
or sailing voirels at any state of the tide.
As to tbe Cordilleras—always tbe great stum
bling bloek to the.Atrato ship canal projects—Mr.
Kelley ran a regular line of levels frbm base to
base, showing the highest point to be bat 500 feet,
with a steep water shed, through which he propo
ses t* tunnel a distance of three miles—hut two-
thirds the length of the great Ilooine tunnel in
Now York, now In succeasful progress. “The
deepest cutting,” he says, “would not exceed 120
feel, and tho average over .rutting 80 feet. The
summit level is at the juuction, from which, each
way, tbe water would flow nl the rate of two mile#
■ ud a half per hour, and in sufficient volume to
bear on its bosom the commerce of the world.”
Mr. Kelley's surveys—made at his own ex
pense—were begun, if we rightly remember, in the
summer of 1851, and prosecuted with vigor, in
four sepnratv parlies, a period of four years, to the
fall of 1855, He has himself, undoubtedly, strong
faith in the work—if practicable, one of the grand
est tho human mind has ever conceived—and we
await further developments with interest.— .V. O.
