The Prospeeta of Kanawa.
As important u» it is to tho pence of the country,
it is impossible to say, with «uy degree of certain
ty, what will be the result of tho ni «veuiont now
before Congress for the admission of K inms into
the Union. We have never trusted in parties to
pan the bill and put an end tu the dWgncuful agi
tation, but we have all along churubod the b pe
that tho Administration wa* strong enough, coin-
binod with n united South, to carry the inensure
successfully through. Notwithstanding the symp
toms that present iberasuives, we trust that such
may yet bo the oase, though we confess that opp ..«i-
tiun to the bill bus corno from quarters which wo
least suspected uf unfriendly intentions Tho few
Ainerioan members from tho South who have ni-
lowed themselves fo be governed in tbeir estimate
of the peace of the country and the bo^t means for
preserving it, by n long cherished hostility to the
Democratic party—a fouling that is well founded
in itself, but illegitimate when it blinds men to the
force of truth—we think have been guilty of a
grave and dangerous error. Nothing could bo
more painful to us thun the spectacle, which wo
hare recently witnes-od,of tho great Kentucky Sen-
atcr reoonciliug himself, under a false system of
reasoning, to a position friendly to a class uf mon
who have for years kept the country in trouble by :
their wieked and fanatical conspiracies ngninst its j
laws and the integrity of the Union itrelf. it is a ,
strango ntM painful spectacle, and we des-ru to j
any that let him who may occupy such h position,
he can receive no sympathy, no apology, at our
hands.
There are some features in the Kansas cons'llu- j
tion that we hare as little fancy for a* Mr. Ci ,t« ;
tendon possibly cun have, and we are quite ns «r
a* himself from approving tho injustice and
fraud of either party in tho Kansas elections; yet
these points have tholr own peculiar arbiters; they |
belong not to us, nor should they be allowed t, de
ter Congress from getting rid of a question hat
has already done so much harm, and must contin- j
ue to irritate and embroil the two great divisions
of the eouutry so long as it ahull remniu a bone of I
contention in Congress and with tho party press in 1
every section of the country. We love the Union |
better than we do Kansas, and more than we hale j
the Democratic party, and we desire to rid it of
the foul, festering sore that lias bo long preyed '
upon Its peace and quiet. We believe the speedy j
admission of Kansas in the only remedy for the j
grievance, and as a patriotic press wo aro willing
to stand shoulder to shoulder with any tnan or !
party whose efforts aro honostly directed to such n {
" ov>!M r,ltT1 w'-re." *^ ur *b»U we be (deterred in •
coarse by the opposition 6rf)afiy - *wft7i'Js, or the
character of the company in which we may tem
porarily find ourself. A press that will not adhere
to truth and the causo of the country under all
circumstances, is undeserving of tbo confidence
and support of honest men of all pnrties.
We have digressed somewhat, however, from
tho design with which we not out, which was hi j
enlighten our readers, so far ns wo ourselves ure j
illumined, on tho prospects of tho Kansas bill.— |
Tho New York Dally Newt, on Administration or- j
gun and in the way of correct information, in it* J
j H «uo of tho 22d instant, profosses to havo received
"reliable information Irum Washington, that iho
"admission of Kansas into the Union as prop**, d
"by the President, is sure and certain! The Sen—
••ate will pese the bill to-day or to-morrow, by h
"decisive vote. It will go through tho House of
*• Representatives by a majority of twenty or more:
•‘and within thirty days the Stale of Kiin-na will
"have become the thirty -wound State oi tho A-
"morican Union.”
We trust this may be so, and that we shall
toon have the pleasure of chronicling the end of i
this digrncoful contest.
The Philadelphia Prett, a Douglas orgnn, on
the other band, has very different information, and
is eqnnlly confident of n defeat of Jhe bill in tho
House. "Let tbo vote bo taken immediately, next
•‘week, in thirty days, or ninety days," says the
Prut, "and the result will bo tbo snino. It will
“be bent’n, and badly beaten. ” It even nueutnos
to make oat a lift of the yeas and nays In advance,
