yesterday, front Dr. Andrews of the Gearyfn CVti-
*en, §nd Col. Qaulding of the Griffin Kmpirt State,
twe of the most spirited of our up>cuutury papers.
Kelther has the care-wurn aspect of an oditor, uml
we congratulate them that tKey have just enough
of the labors of the craft to keep them In good con
dition. These gentlemen do business in one of the
wealthiest and most productive sections of the
State, and onr merchants would do trail to consult
them as to the best means of making friends and
customers in that quarter. No doubt they nro pre
pared with a plan !
Our suggestions to the Stroot Committee
•f Council, have generally been so kindly received
that we feel encouraged to presont to them n sad
deficiency, aud we do it with the hope that the
matter will securo immediate attention. We refer
lo the condition of the crossings ou the west side
•f Bull-street. This Is tho only promenade in our
• Uy, and while it is crowded every evening, the
orossings are in many places entirely worn away,
and where they are sound, they are so narrow and
•n contemptible a scale, as to be wholly insufficient
for the accommodation of the pubiic. Beginning
at State-street, they should all bo torn up ami good
solid board orossings, fully six foot iu width, laid
down the entiro route from the point mentioned
to the Park. The walk through Monterey
' square is an insult to the beautiful monuuiout thiit
looks down upon it, and should bo taken uway and
replaced with brick or stone, twico or thrico its
present width.
We throw out theso suggestions, hoping they
may maet with a favorable und early considera-
lion.
Taxes.—Our oorrespondont, “Bub Short”, oo-
copies but very little space, but he brings to tho
publlo notice a matter of sorlnuB import, in which
•very ciliscn is interested. The hardship ana in-
Justloe of the tax law seem to be universally ac
knowledged, except by those that passed it, and
wo would be pleased to bear from those who nro
more familiar with its operation than ourselves.
Let the grievance be clonrly shown, nnd wu are
toady to unite in a demand for the remedy.
Underwriter’s Sam:.—Messrs. Ootarus Cohen
k Co., will sell at auction to.day the chains, an
chors and rigging of bark actress, also tho hulj
and cargo as it lies. See advertisement.
Accident.—Charit-c H. Contes, the first matoof
tho ship J. M. Wood, now loading at iho upper
hydraulic preas, met with a very severe accident,
Friday last. He was engaged in receiving tho
cargo, when abale of compressed cnitou.weiah’nii

turing it about five inches above iho ankle.

Under tho administration of Mr. Buehannm

A oorpi ofomptoyres koowu as “Drummers".—
The system moy give employment to men out of
business, but we feel convinced it is a wrong one,
and besides being expensive, makes no R.hqiiatu
return to the employers. We have a word to bay
in deprecation, and by way of advice to those more
Immediately interested.
These Drummers are notoriously obnoxious to
customers from the country, and especially to
•outhern merchants; and wo beliuva that if they
could be got rid of, the buyer would bo rejoiced nnd
the sellar benefit ted. We can think of no m,.ro
effectual way of abolishing the evil without detri
ment to business, than for firms in tho groat com
mercial marts to pursue a judicious system of ml
vertising in tho newspaper press. 10very body—in
the south at loost—takes newspapers, roads them,
and looks to them for information of the sources
from whence he is to supply his wants. If hut
half the sum now wasted by northern merchants
upon these intolerable posts culled “Drummers’’
were spent in making their business known through
the press of each State, we feol assured that our
northern frionds would secure a better class of cus
tomer* and more of them. It would not only bo
good policy and a saving or expanse, but would, in
addition, protect them against false representations
made by Drummers, and obligations entered into
by them, which their employers find it difficult to
perform without stretching their consciences or tn-
oarring a loss. Such a papor as the Republican,
with it* large circulation among tho mcrcantilo
•las* and other business men, would do a northern
boose more substantial benefit in Georgia mid tho
adjacent States than all the Drummers they could
■hip aouth on the deck of a steamship. Though
aotne may consider the remurk Immodest, it is
nevertheless true. At all evunts, let tho mere
ebanti of Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and
other oities of the north make the experiment fora j

■ome more profitable business thereafter, we are |
