fiowroiBD Loss or a Savannah Vksakl.—There
is ground for apprehension that the brig Macon,
an old trader between this port and New York, has
been lost at saa. She olearad from this port on the
28th of January last, with a valuable cargo, nnd
nothing bad been hoard of her at tho latest dates
from Now York. The Macon is a vessel ot u>
bout 245 tons register, and was cleared by Messrs.
Csrieton A Parsons, with a cargo consisting of 50
bales upland ootton, 2,500 saoks of whont.276 sacks

She was commanded by Copt. Griffith.

to his aid, and taking Toney along with
them, made a thorough sotroh of every pine*

They spent several days in searching, and up to
Saturday night last, had succeeded in recovering
articles, such as dress coats, overcoats, punts, vests,
hats, shoes, talmas, shawls, plaids nnd sundry other
articles of wearing apparel, to tho ntnount of
about $500. Some of the abovo mentioned articles
were traoed to Washington, and llurko coun

SaTANNAn Institute fob Savings.—As will
be seen by the publication of this institution, this
morning, its charter has expired nnd its a flairs nro
tube wound up. It would he truly unfortunate to
have such a concern wholly abolished, and ns the
Merchants’ aud Planters' Bank will roccive nnd
pay out deposits on tho samo tortus, the loss will
not be materially felt.
Tho Savannah Institute for Savings has been
managed with signal ability, nnd its Direction
must feelgratlBed that their efforts havo met wi'h
a just appreciation and success. It has been pure
ly a labor of philanthropy to manage its affairs;
and as they retire frnm a position of responsibili
ty, without emolument, the good wishes of those
whose interests they have so carefully And consci
entiously guarded should follow them.
We cannot impress too strongly upon our citi*
lens the importance of suoh an institution. It en
ables the frugal to place their money in a rafo
place, and ut the samo time have it accumulating,
It promotes economy, encourages industry, begets
• habit of saving, and In short offers to the poor
man a chance for investment that he onn find no

how many are there who waste this sum every
week? We speak of those who receive their wa-

looks too little to be saved. This is tho oluss which
this institution will benefit most, and we hope that
in bringing it to pablio notiee there aro many who
will nol neglect so favorable an opportunity to
benefit themselves.

the Oeorgian belongs to that class. Success to oir

tlm two countries; aud that you would always find him
disposed to aid in imdtituiuiug it.
With regard to the ro*t of thu despatch, Count Walew
ski said that lt« would rcliirn an answer to Dm u day or

that h" had no hesitation iu staling nt euec that nothing

within lit* British territories. Hi* Excellency admitted
that he had u*e,l Htrotyt language, h,it it had been sole

never pointed out. or intended to point out, a remedy for
them. It was for the English government and tlm Eng

uhnl measure a remedy could be applied. I have, Ac.,
