Terrible Mutiny on a New Hertford
Whaler.
The Sidney (Australia) Empire, of tho 12th .Tan
nery gives en aoeount of a bloody mutiny tbnt oc
curred on board the Amerioan wbalor, Junior, of
New Bedford, on the whaling ground off tho cuu.t
of New Zealand. The following extract embraces
the mpst important particulars:
On Christmas night, or early on tho following
morning, while the ship was horo to undor n duublo
reefed topsail, flvo of tho craw, one of whom was
the enrpe ntor, went down into tho cabin with load-
ed muskets and pistols,* hero tho cnpti.in und offi*
oers were all sleeping, and nothing but n bom’s
orew had charge of the ship. The.o men, tho
ringleader of whom appeared to boa person named
Plummer, went down Into the cabin, opened tho
oabin doors andsllflredsimuUaneuusly upon tho offi
cers, killing the captain and third mate, nnd wound
ing severely the other officers. This outrage was
no sooner committed that they continued thoir
bloody deeds, by chopping off the captain’s head
with an axe and stabbing tho third officer until ho
breathed no more. The following mornimg they
hove the two bodies overboard. Tho second offi
cer received a ball which struck him n litilo bolow
tho breast, and it Is expected there will bo n great
deal of difficulty In removing it. Tho chief officer
had a narrow esenpo ol his lifo, tho balls crossing
the oheek and lodging In his left shoulder ; two
balls have, been extracted, but l)r. Nathan is of
tho opinion there are several remaining. Tho chief
officer slowed himself nwny in tho hold of tho
Junior, hut having discovered him, nfter starving
for five days, the mutineers promised to spurn his
life if he would oonduct the ship whero they could
land easily with tho whale boats. Archibald Mel
lon, jr., of Edgartown, was tho enptnin. It whs
hie first voyage as master. Tho first mute was
Nelson Provost, of Nantucket. Thu sccuiid mate
was Henry T. Lord, who, wo believe, resides near
Boston. The name of tho third tnnto was John
Smith, whose residence we aro unablo to ascer
tain.

Risen.-—Letters from Mhoho to tho 12tb of Janu
ary give the intelligence tbnt ns iho number of
exportations of Chinese ooolios to the islnnd of Cu
ba was daily increasing, the United State* Consul
nt Macao had transmitted to Uib Spanish Consul
Genera) a communication from tho Atnerioan Min
ister, Mr. Reed, saying tbnt the laws of bis coun
try prohibited United Slates vessels from trans
porting to States where slavery existed individuals
who wore to remain thoro for an Indefinite period.
In oonsequenco, the Amuricnn Minister requested
tho Spanish Consul to refuso authorization to tho
despatch of coolies to Cuba in American vessels.—
The Spanish Consul prudently replied thiit lie could
not do othorwise than obey tho orders of his sov
ereign and protect those who under Spanish laws,
entered Into a legal traffic, and that if tho Atnori-

must appeal through the agents ot his own gov.
