SAVANNAH, HA.
Friday Morning, April 2S, 1858.
Tho Propeller Thomae Swann arrived nt
New York on Tuaulajr morning, not Wed.
nesdajr |M reported in the Hepnblican, yesterday.
A despatoh to the agents in thin city an
the arrival of the Alabama in New York,
of Wednesday.
jBP* A negro, the property of D. L. Cole, was
seriously injared yesterday afternoon, while at work
in the hold of the steamship Ilunteville, hy the fall
log upon him of n hale of cotton from the hooks
while U was being lowered into the bold of the
vessel.
JHT’ A white mao, we learn, bad three of his
Ungers taken off yesterday afternoon by the small
discharging .engine, at the wharf of the steamship
OunteriUe.
Wo bad tho ploasurc, yesterday, of a visit
from our cotemporary of tho Brunswick Herald,
B. P. Griffin, Esq. Wo wero pleased to find him
in good condition, nnd to hear of the brightening
prospacti of the Brunswick A Florida Rail Itoad,
which, ho informs us, will soon ho entirely free
from d^t, and completed to the point of junction
at an early day.

Tho next presidential election la h good way off,
but politics being about tho only subjeot on which
our people look Into the future, it may not be un
interesting to let our readers know wbat is said
In reference to tho next Presidency. Several
suggestions nro mads In tho following paragraph,
which wstako from tho Pennsylvania Inquirer:
The Carieravipe (Gen.) Exprtee nominates the
Hon. llowcll Cobb os a oandiuate for tho Presiden
cy lo ISrtU. At thie the Charleston AW* takes
exception, uud say* that “Mr. Cobb baa noil Iter
brains nor principle enough for the bigu
office." Tho AW# then proceed# to discuss tho
chnncos, and argues “Hint none but n Northern
tuan nnd a Democrat, can boat the Opposition
c.imtidaio for tho next Presidency.' H a confess
that there is something In this. And yet it Isquito
probable—Mr. Buchuunn having been taken from
the North—thnt nil attempt will ho mude at t ie
next struggle, by the Democratic porty, to satisfy
nnd conciliate the South, by selecting one of her
own sons. It is however, entirely too soon to dis
cuss tho subject of tho next Presidency. Tho pros,
ent incumbent has been liitlo more than a year In
office, oud nllhough ho has committed many blund
ers, there is no telling ithnl ho may yet accomplish,
by way of unitiug his own friends. Immediately
after his nomination, it was understood that bo
would bo siitistlcd with a single term. But cir-
rumstnticos altor cases, nnd it Is quite n common
thing for parasites and flatterers to persuade nn
iucuinhuiil of (ho Pre-idcnlbil chair, that he is the
only man who, by conscuting to o ro electiou, cun
save tho country.
fSSS* We givo up the Morning AWs in despair.
There is no way of reaching a press that sets at
naught common propriety, bids defiance to the
recognised rules of tho | rofession, and is insoosU
ble to shame when convicted of tboir violatiou.
The editor speaks of “chagrin” in connection
with ourselves. Wo have felt none, nor hod cause
for such an emotion,in tho publio sentiment of this
community. We shall always feel proud of tho
“ridicule” of men holding such principles as ap-
pear to cuntrol the columns of tho AW«.
Verily, our geological friends are nfnst concern.
They not only writo their own oouipliinonts and
eanrass for signatures, but carry along wiib them,
as part of tboir travelling paraphernalia, a com
plete nssorttnent of syoopses nnd puffs, ready cut
and dried, to be put into the mouth* of indolent
or aeoomoii*ting editors! There is no end to (bo
ingouulty of man.
Gov. Koihxsox ox Kansas.—Mr. C. Robinson,
tho Topeka Governor of Kansas, now in Washing
ton, bns written n letter showing most clearly bio
preference for tho admission of Kunsns under the
Luemnptou constitution, rather than no ndutls-

Railroad Sim it it at Sr. Maiivs.—Tho citizons
of St. Marys and Camden county, are much In
terested on the subject of a railroad connection
with Savnnnnh, nnd on the 4th of next month are
to have a meeting to e .udder iho ways nnd means
of forming it. See the advertisement uf tho com

IIunoarian Winns.—We received,yesterday, n
call from Mr. Freund, of tho firm of Freund A
Grossinger, the well known Hungarian Wine
merchants, of Water street, New York, lie is on
n visit to thu S.iuthorn States, nnd thence to the
West Indies, for the purpose of introducing hi.* de
licious wines, which have recently acquired a deserv
ed celebrity ntnong connoiseura in other portion* of
the United States. It is so difficult now to obtain
tho pure juico of tho grape from France, that these
gentlemen are doing the country a real service in
supplying it with a perfectly whulsowo beverage,
and at pricca that show to what uoconscionnhlo im

Mr. Freund will remain in tho city for a few
days, at the Pulaski House, and wo confidently
commend him to our citizen# as u fair dealer and u

Pbale’s Coutit or Death.—We made a short
visit to this celebrated painting last evening, now
on exhibition at tho Atbonmum. Wo were toui-h
gratified by tho general appearances of tho work,
though wo are unprepared, from a hasty inspection
by gas light, (ogive an iotei.igont opinion of its
merits as a work of urt. It ovidently possesses
some striking beauties, both of conception nnd ex
ecution, and is well worthy of a visit. We shall
■oo it again and speak of it more in detail.
Ax Artificial Stork.—Among tho curious
things to be witnossed at tho St. Andrew's Hall
panorama exhibition, is a representation of the
terrible storm that pnssod over tbo Crimea and
Black Son oo tho memorable night of the 1 ith of
November. The hissing of the galo, the .loud
poals of thunder and its reverberation la the dis
tance, with the Hushes of forked lightning, aro ad
mirably executed, but by what peculiar mechani
cal process we aro uninformed. Our sheet iron
etorms at thu Athontuum are not a “circmuhtaucu’
to It. The attendance on these exhibitions is welt
kept up, and, indeed, the points we havo alluded
to mako It well worthy of u visit, in sp'to of the
luck ofurtidlie conception and finish in tho paint
ing itself.
The Mac«»x “TBLEfiRAtui” ani» Savannah
“Georgian.”—Somo most interesting compli
ments are pussaing just now between these two
brethren of tho “Harmonious Family.” We gave
a spocitnon of tho Telegraph’* suavity a day or two
ago, and n/e enabled this morning to furnish thu
umiahle response of tho sua-hourd brother, as fol
lows:
“We would In justice to our friend Clisby, re

of ono accustomed to the management of u res

Good News rott G’apt. Durham !—The Paris
correspondent of tho X. Y. Commercial writes un
der duto uf the 10th lost., as follows :
One of the brothers Gauthier, owners of the
screw line of stenuiurs to New York, nnd of the
Lyonnais, which was sunk by the Adriatic, Is now

have occurred oo board this vessel einco her arrival
at Now York. Tbo health of her crew, however,
has materially Improved, all the patients now in

.Mr. A Hoop n ml IiIh Proposal to the l£ng-

On Thursday last we announced that Mr. Tims.
Allsop, for whoso apprehension a warrant has been
Hsnud. charging him with conspiring to assassinate
N tpoleon, had offered to snrrcndor if tho govern
in ent would guarantee the expenses "f Ms defence.
This announcement lias been copied into all tliu
principal newspapers i f thu country, and has been
placed before the government. N-xiuswcr bns yet,
however, been received, although wo helievo one
may bo expected in a few days, thu government
having tho matter under consideration. Since thu
at tielu in which wo mudo known Mr. Allsop’s in-
ten lion wa* published, a relative of thu accused
hu# corroborated our in format ion, and has voiitiud
our belief that Mr. AIDop knew nothing of the
Conspiracy to kill Napoluoti. Tlm gentleman who
has thus confirmed our anticipations and our nn ■
noiinrcinunt, writes:—
I have n«w to slate unhesitatingly, nnd with all
tho uinphnsia of which languugo is capable, that
Mr. Thomas Allsop is entirely innocent of tho
diurgc* laid against him ; that lie had no coutpli-
iry in the attempt of thu llth of January- nnd
not only that ho had no complicity, but that he
had no knowledge that that or any other attempt
was to I>o undo; and that ho derivol his first in
formation ol it tram tho newspaper placards when
on hi* way to his office on tlm following morning.
All this can ho fully substantiated by proof, nod
Mr. Allsop is willing to come forward at unco nnd
answer any charges tint may he made against him;
hut hu is not prepired to undergo a gratuitous and
lengthened imprisonment previous to trial*, nor i*
ho willing to tttin hiutodf pecuniarily in defending
himself against tho power of two governments,
both de.-irous of sacrificing him to u presumed ne
cessity of statu craft.
If means can ho found to obviate theso two evils
by a day being named for his trial, nnd hi* ex-
ponsos guaranteed to him iu tho event of hi* in
nocence being pravod, ho is willing to surrender
on tlm day named, and abide his trial. A comtnu-
Motion on this subject has, I believe, been made

kn »wn in a few days. In the mcnntiino I havo to
request that tho publio will suspend their judg
ment on tlm whole affair until tin opportunity of
exp'aontion shall ho afforded. To his personal
friends and numerous acquaintances, I feel that
any appeal of this kind i* unnecessary. Mr.
Thotiin* Allsop is nut an unknown individual, nor
n man of yesterday. For now nearly forty years
be has led nn active life in this tnutropolis. E*
sentially of a kindly ond warm hearted nature, his
sympathies ext*nded beyond the narrow hound#
of creed or country, and no plan or movement hav
ing for its object to rescuo mankind front tho
thraldom of tyranny, ortho still more degrading
ynko of debasing ignorum-e and superstition, hut
has numbered Thomas Allsop among its f«»ronio<t
nnd most zealous supporter-; hut ho would he. us
