Jury of Fulton county, in this State, in speaking
of lotteries, say that "the system is dangerous to
the interests of tho community and demoralizing
In its influence.”
Mechanics Wanted.—Tho Homo Courier says
that there is at Ibis time a groat demand for me
chanics in that city. A largo number of buildings,
which were destroyed by the late eon ting, ation, are
being re-built.
Anniversary of the Union Society.
The hundred and eighth anniversary of the
Union Society wnscelobratod in duo form, jester*
day, nt Ueibesda, the sent of thoir eelimil. Tho
occasion was a most interesting one and enjoyed
by an unusual number of mouthers nnd patrons nl
the society, a very lurge proportion of whom wire
ladies.
A few minutes after twelve o’clock tbo Society
convened in the Academy building for the trans
action of business. The minutes of tho lust nnt.l-
versary meeting were rend by the Secretary, I'M*
ward O. Wilson, nnd confirmed.
The President of fho society, Joseph S. Fay*
Esq., then road his annual report, us follows:
president's annual r it pout to tre members or
TI1K UNION SOCIETY.
It is again my duty as your President, under
the 7th Rule of the Society, to report to you "its
progress and the statu of its funds.”
The property of the - ociety is tho same ns here
tofore reported, with a slight exception—say about
941.600. This includes the cost of Bethesdn, its
out fit and servants, which, of cour.*o, produce no
iueame. The productive pro petty is as follows:
The Pavilion Hotel, oo South Broad-street; Two
lots and improvements, in Vork street; seven
•bares of Central Railro-id Stock; ten shares of
Bavannab and Augusta Railroad Stock; one Rond
of the City of Savannah for $600; six shares
South-Western Railroad Stock.
Besides this, is n quarter section of land. located
in Iowa, The late Mr. Wtn. Stnrr occujicd a
house on the western half of odo oi tbo Society's
lots in York-street, fur a long period of years, nt
a ground rent of $60 per annum. The house be
longed to him, and as there uppenred to bo no
lease or contract fur the occupancy of the Society's
land, he was considered, and considered bitOMilf,
I believe, a tenant at will. No irtue was ever
made with him, and from respect to his advanced
age and limited means, ho was never disturbed,
tboagh the ground rent was not more than half
the legal interest on the estimated value of tho
lot. Under these circumstances, though it mny bo
that the bouse, both in law and equity, should
revert to and belong to tbo Society, on whoso
land it stands, the Board of Muuagurs have
thmght it proper to agree to ullow thu heirs of
Mr. 8tarr$5U0 for the improvements. This seetned
to the Bourd liberal, yet to hove done otherwise
might have savored of upprc»>don. It is better
for them than tbo removal of tho building*; relieves
any apparent hardship iu the case, and gives the
Society at ones an increase of annual income of
$260.
The late Mr. Henry Hnupt, I havo been ered.
ibly informed, bequeuih*»d, among other lega
cies, (be sum of $600 to this Society ; but in some
way the will has been lost. This good intention
may be frustrated by tbu inability to estnblirh the
will on the part of tho Executor, Mr. George S.
Frierson. I hopo it may not be m; tut even if if
is, I trust that so thoughtful an act on his part, in
bis hours of feebleness arid sickness, may bo ap
preciated by tbo Society, and his example not be
lost upon others.
I submit herewith the Treasurer's ncuount.rbow*
ing a bulame oi $10,08; also a statement snowing
the source* of our receipts and the details of our
expenditures. The total of tho lutter is $1,945 1)0,
showing the cost of maintaining our boys, the nr.
•rage number for tho year having been about .10,
not far from $165 each. Tho iucotne appears t«
have been $8,981 99, showing n deficiency of
$063 91, which has been mnde up by special con
tributions. At the timo of my lust report there
were twenty-five boys in tho churguof tho Society,
since which, there have been nineteen admitted,
and four withdrawn by parents or guardians, leav
ing forty, thu present number dependent upon
your caro and sustenance.
We have now reached the maximum number
that we can shelter, oven if our pecuniary ability
were adequate to support more, oii.l ns many as
can be thoroughly instructed by one teacher.
It may reasonably be asked by you, why, with
this inadequacy of income, the managers have,
continued to enlarge the operations of the Society?
The answer is: that we have had to feel our way
•nd gain our own experience. It bus been an ex
periment, and though our expenses tuny be beyond
oar income, a successful one. The sulurios, cost of
Buildings, and specifio expenses, are no greater
for forty boys than for twenty-five. Tho only
addition to tbo cost is for food and clothing. If the
Society and the community will not sanction what
we have done, we cannot go back to twenty-live;
wo mmt go book to a small family of twelve which
one person can superintend, manage and touch.—
But when you consider tho advantages conforud on
the community, the reliufto the suffering, tho good
inpllshed, there seems only one course to pur-
It does not seem a question of how we shall
• onr expenditures and restrict our chnritins,
hot bow we shall inoresse our resources and per-
feet and extend our operations.
My last report showed the society to be In debt
tbe earn of $1,200 49. Ao active effort nt your
anniversary meeting resulted in n considerable ad
dition to the number of members, nnd some dona
tions were made to the funds of the society.—
Among them was one for $176, from an unknown
*1 liberal friend, with the promise,nn certain con-
Mods, of a like sum annually. All this, however,
****ti sufficient, and last winter a further move-
was msde to relieve tbe socioty fiom debt nnd
add to its permanent funds. The appeal was not
a general one for want of lime, but a generous re.
apooie baa been made and about thirty Indies and
gentlemen have contributed upwards of $2,600.
Unquestionably more would havo been obtained
by more extended applications, hut it is Imped that
•11 Interested will como forward and follow up this
beginning with snob voluntary aid ns they may
feel able to render. Our debt is paid for the pro<—
an),'and about‘$500 addod to the property of 11 o
Aoe'ety. nnd-tbe sains amount set npnrt for the
‘‘BoUdluf Fond." Too will perceive that tbe bouse
occupied by (lie superintendent and his family Is
very much decayed and wo must bo providing
means to erect eubetRulUl, permanent and mnro
extonsive.bulldlngs to noernmnodate more extend*
ed operations on the pert of the soolety. We should
also steadily Increase our permanent funds, so that
our Income mny be of sufficient amount to be in
dependent of tho nnnuul fluctuation in the nuiu
her of members. This should bo the fixed policy
of the sooiety.
At the last nnnlrersnry meeting, tbe suggestion
ta separate the officos of President and Treasurer
met the uppruval of tho society, though it wns not
finally noted upon. The Board of Managers there
fore felt nuthorixod to adopt tho ohango. and elect
ed Mr. J.M. Prentiss temporarily as Treasurer,
but bis oilier engagements cmnpollng him to give
up the appointment, it wus transfered to Mr. J. A,
Cuurvolsle, who holds it now. Both these geutie
men have ronderod acceptable sorvice.
At tho same meeting also, lho rules of the so
olety were rolered to tho Board of Mnuagore for
eatiro revision. They huvo performed this duty
and now submit » draft of mica or by-law* con
formable to thonitored position and operations of tho
socioty. I hopo they will lo approved and prompt*
ly adopted.
With regard to tho ungrnnted lands of Chat
hniu county, nothing lias yot boon accomplished,
and without the co-operation of tho Trustee* of
Cbnthntu Academy, who seem quite indiflbront lo
tho matter, I fear nothing will ever uccruo to the
Socioty .‘roiu them.
I submit a report of our suporl* tondent nnd
farmer,Mr. Murphy. Our farm has gained some
what iu productiveness, and lia* added tnoro than
in any previous your, to tho support of tho family.
I hopo that this progress will continue. Much has
beau d«nc, but more remains to bo accomplished.
It soems hardly needful to comment upon tho
state of things here; they show for themselves to
th«»o who visit Uuthesdu. To llioso who do uot,

well and in a suiiifuetury manner.
Our school has been more successful than over,

amined it as second to none of its viuss in Chat-
hum county, or perhaps risen hero. Thu teacher
of last year, Mr. Tasker, left us, ns contemplated.
f«r tho West, soon after the Anniversary, nnd was
succeeded by Mr. W, II. Shepuid, whoso report I
submit with this, lie tins proved hitnsulf very
competent, and bus given entire satisfaction. Thu
boys liavo progressed admirably under hi* enr*^
mid continue to maintain a high character for
their deportment. They usually attend, when the
weather is suitable, tho Isle of Hope church, nnd
are indebted to some ladies and geniletiien of that
district for valuable suiwiiy school teaching.
The Superintendent's report shows a continuu m
of health, for whien we should be grateful to the
Giver of all good. During the three your* nnd up
wards that we have occupied Hothcsdu, there has
been iio occasion to cull a physician to tho b >ys
under our charge. Tnis is also evidence of good
cate uud judicious superiinon-leuco,
Tho iiiunhcr of members reported nt tho lust
Anniversary was 260. Some havo removed to
other sociion* o| thu country, and others have gone
to “that bourne whunco no traveller return.-;" some
havo resigned, liut enough havo been added t»
bring our number at present up to 363.
I congratulate you on tho prosperous condition
of our Society. If occupies a position in fho af
fections and interest of the community which in
surcs its vigorous maintenance. To ilia Boar 1 of
Managers I owe many thunk- for hearty co-opera
tion and kind nssititaneo at all time-*. You owe an
acknowledgment to them lor tho principal cost of
un addition to thu sleeping accommodations of tho
boys, aud to others fur many tokcus of friend

I close, with this, my term of mtvL-o ns your
President. Its rememhranen will ho full of pleas,
tint associations to tuo, and I am thankful to you
for your o •t.fidenco nod for tho cncoiirug ‘iiicni
