Wednesday Evening, April 23, 1353. J
Editor Republican: We bnve been visited with
frost, on tho morning, of tho 24th, 2Gtb, 27tb, and
28th instant, accompanied with somo ice. The
frost, until tbi. morning did not appear to do
mjch damage to tbe growing crop, or the great
promise of fruit. But tbe frost of thi. morning
has done great tnisohief. I hnve seen to-day in
my own plantation corn that was eight to ten
inches high killed to tbo ground, and plants of
young cotton entirely killed. Tha fine stands of
cotton that we Lad procured is very uiuob if not
Mriously injured. Our corn we can yet replant,
Tho fruit {.falling off the trees, and will be scarce,
I! any i. left In bless us with thie luxury.
There are but 56 bale, of cotton left in this rr.
glon. In baste, truly your., L.
Brtan County, April 23, 1353.
Editor Republican: There w i. a considerable
fall of ball in mine pvt. of this county nn the
28th, (Monday.) Tbe rain on that night, with
high northerly winds, has resulted in n heavy frost
thi. morning. Tbo therm -muter Mood at 35° at
auo rise. This is certainly a very uuusuul oc«
currence, and as unwelcome as it is rare. C ion
in exposed situation, must certi'nly be injured, if
not killed. I have not heard from any o| toy cot*
Ion planting neighbors up to the time of w hit g,
and hop# the {"jury may be less than I anticipate.
Tbe injury to corn will be slight. The vegotaHK e
in my gnrden have not custuineJ the slightest per.
oeptible injury. The tomato is very susceptible
of cold, but I see no trace, of injury—this is owing
to the protection from surrounding tries. On the
23i inst. wo experienced quite a cool change which
came on very suddenly, and on the m .ruing of
t ie 24th the thermometer sto<> I at 3'J°. Y-*ur pn.
psr contains acoount. of frost in Augusta and v{.
einity. Tbe injury sustaine i in tbe up-count*y at
this time will doubtless be considerable. But our
language ought to be "Cede Deo."
Re*p*ic fully, W. s. II.
A "P. S." to a letter dated Albany, Dougherty
ooanty, April 2Sth, says:
"Wo bare bada killing frott in this section."
Additional information on tbo efforts of the frost
and cold weather will be found in our weekly com
