Grand Triumph 1 Tho Country anil tlie
Consttuition Saved by the American
Party.
Wln» would look for a triumph of tho American
pvrty in this, tho day of thoir woaknoss nnd dis*
astor? Who would huvo supposed that tho illustri
ous "Sam," who bos longsioco been regarded as
doubly defunct, nud whoso funeral has been
proaohod hy every democratic parson in tho hind,
Would rise from tho tomb in nn hour of peril to
his country, throw off tbo pallor and inertia of tho
grave, nnd whon crory other hopo had failed,
bravely throw himself in tho breach nnd turn
back the tide ol ruin ! Who would have supposed
it! With what supernatural vir'uu must
bis gigantic limbs bo endowed, that ho should
thus rally from the corruption of his "loug home,’’
nnd, coming to lifunguiti, achieve u victory which
his triumphant enemies and persecutors woro pow
erless to win 1 Tot, it is even so, and tho world
lliould stand muuzed at the sepectnclo. Wo havo
the very best democratic authority for all we suy.
To tho proofs:
A few weeks ago, tho Senate's Kansas bill was
lost in the Ilouee by a small majority. It wna
considered a triumph of the freusoilers over the
South. Tho DoiU'icrat8 had a in'uj >rity of s«mo
twenty-six in that branch of Congress, yet in look
ing over tbo list of yens and nays it appeared that
» few southern Auieriouna wero voting against tho
measuro. Straightway nonrly every democratic
press in tho South oponed tho batteries of their
denunciation aguitist those few Americans, and do-
dared that they alono woro responsible for tho loss
of the bill—tho shame, tho disgraeo uud the trea
son were theirs.
Well, a few dnys ago a new project, tho English
bill, came up, and we woro told that the snfety of
the South and of tho constitution dcpond».d on its
passage. It did pass, by tho small majority of nine
Votes; but upon tho list of yeas, wo find recorded
tbo names of eight American*. Had they voted
the other way, tiio bill would havo been lost, tho
Administration disgraced, tho constitution over
thrown, tho rights of tho bouth trampled upon, and
tho country ruinod. Now who U entitled to all
the credit for the passage of tho measure? That
is the question which wo desire the democratic
press of the South to answer. The Americans were
■ololy responsible when tho measuro of deliverance
was iosq is it not their triumph, and is not the
country solely indebted to them, nnd not to tho
democratic pnrty, now that it has passed?
Wo cnll upon tho Morning JVeict, tho Augusta
Constitutionalist, the Columbus Time*, tho Atbons
-Banner, and other democratic prossos, to como
forwurd and do tho Americans justice in this latter
voto, or frankly acknowledge to their readers that
their denunciation of tho Americans for their con
nection with tho Senato bill was a slander and a
wrong.

Whon tho Fronuh' woro in Egypt* Sir David
Baird, with n British forco from India, «n bis way
to join Sir John Hutchinson before Alexandria,
occupied Be rim nnd partially fortified it, and tho
works remain in tolernblo condition; hut tho D*
land is barren ami uninhabitable. ItB importance
is derived from Its being thu hoy, the Gibraltar ot
the Red Sou, and Sts command of tho omratico
through the Straits. England has a vory nieo ap
preciation oT such places us these. It bus tho hoy
of tho Mediterranean und sovural small koys be

pretty little spot iu tho North Sou, called Iloligu-

Tho l'uritu question tnkos this shapo : By tho
oitaldishmeut of tho ovorinnd route* t» India, first
oy Lieut. tViighoriqand now tho rapidly approach
iog completion of the railway from Cairo to Suez,
the proposed Euphrates railway to tho Persian gull
by English capitalists, uud thu canal of Suez by
Lounops and tho Frenchmen, the trade of tho East
is likely to take a new direction. The voyages to
India, usually occupying from four to fivu months
via tho Capo of Good llopo, will bo less Import ant
upt-u tho completion of llioso transits hy rails or
canal. Indued, it is thought tho vast saving in
time will divert tho trade of the East immediately
from its former tracks. Tho advantage ol this
would not he u-mfiued to England alone. It is sup.
posed that Russia, Turkey, Austria, Italy, Franco
and Spain will all cumpciu for a share in Mich
irade as this route may offer; and should tho canal
bo uecimipiished, which tho English engineers (lor
good reasons, perhaps) say is i.»p'i«?ildc, there is
no doubt whatever that these nations would at nnco
attempt tho trade. A writer in nn English maga
zine, not long since, contemplating the results of
this proposed canal of Suez, remarks:—"Tho navi-
gator after having followed the usual easy routes
of the Mediterranean, would disposo ol a part of
his cargo in thu canal of Suez or at lljeddc; would
purchase Ivory nt Massarra, Souakuit or Derhorn,

would bo accomplished rapidly nud without danger

hy reducing tho time necessary for tho operations,
uf commerce, we roduoo tho gonornl expense,
\Vunmake a greater number of these changes fuusi
hlu in a given time, am) faeilltalo them tu small
traders, who arc by far tho mast numcious. By
affording un easier and surer ruuto to navigation
wo find it may be nccompliscd by vessels of small
tonnage, provided with bills of exchange; in short,
it opena tho route to India to coasting vessels and
renders eotntncreo and navigation general. Tur
key, Russia, Austria, Italy and Smithum Spain
might then lit out vessels for India, and these
Fowors would find their maritime resources increase
in invurcu proportion. Marseilles would become
moro important, and tho ports on tho ocean—
Cadiz, Lisbon, Havre, Rotterdam and Hamburg—
would increas their shipping like England, sud
denly brought near Its p iwerful oniony like Spain
and Holland with respect to Manil a and Batavia;
in short, thu inorcasco uf trade competition, oi|m«
hand, and thu vast diminution of expense on thr
othcr, would dnuhtiess lend to lessen tho rates of
exchange. The produce of Asia would abound iu
our markets; tho Asiatic maikets would, in their
turn bo rich in ours, and u general I would he
tho necessary result. All nations would tako ad
vantage of the importance of the trade with India,
China nnd the isliiuds or the ocean.
if this bo true, and if these results urn likely to
follow thu construction of the Canal of Suez, or
oven partially tho completion of tho Cairo lliil-
way, wo mu.-t expect to ecu ati European interest
r- used to this consideration, notwithstanding thu
London '/'*«»•* asserts that "any other Stato (than
England) will inso its time nnd temper by inter-
luring in the question." Wo can porceivo by iho
foregoing extract from an English periodical, the
product ion of a writer who is personally familiar
with the subject, that thu "Cnnlineutul politicians”
have "an interest in those regions of tho world,”
and that "an outburst of spite from tho Continent
al pro-s” Is not very muott to he wondered at.

Bruce, the celebrated Scotch traveller, d.-scribus
I’erim as a low island,with a good harbor fronting
tho Ahysdiiinn shore, live miles lung and two
wide, dividing thu channel into two parts, tho in
most with from 12 to 17 fathoms water; the outer
with from 20 to 110 fathoms. The passage on the
Arabian shoro "though narrowest ami sli.illnwest"
is safest, because Iho other is "endangered by a
great number of low small lands.” The itnpor-
tu two of the position is ihoreforo indisputable.
Wo imagine thu exclusive policy Indicated liy
the L'lndon Time* will not ut all lie rulishcd by its
neighbors, who, already perceiving iho importance
of the opening facilities for ruuching tho Eastern
world, nnd tho absolute control of its trade over

Inkstands to mnlcti.
To sum up the whntn matter, a new impul.-o is
about to bo given to Eastern commerce. England
has the large-t interests to gu*rd and foster, and
she lms seized upon a po-ition in tho Straits of
R ibelmnmlel which gives her the cmiunnnd of tho
commerce of the Red Sea; site ha* taught Europe
the value of this commerce, nnd they now desire to
share it with hor. Franco in particular has nn in
