The Perils of the Border.
While raiding rooently an account of tho fright-
ful maacaore ot aoveral white lutnilioa by the Black
foot Indiana, we were reminded of a thrilling even,
which occurred in the "Wild Weal," « short timo
aubsoquont to tho Revolution, in which a highly
•eaouipiishod young lady, tho daughter of a distin
guished olftoor of tho Amorictn Army, played nn
important part. Tho aiory being of a moat thrill
ing nature, and exhibiting, in n striking manner,
lha "Parila of Iho Bordor," wo have concluded
to give aa extract from it, as originally publishodi
aa follows:
The angle on the right bank of tho Great Kannvr-
ha, formed by itajunction witu tho Oii»», is cullod
Point Pleasant, and is a place of historic*! note.
Here, on the 10th of October, 1774, during what is
known as Lord Duntnoro'a War, wjs touitht one
of the tierceai and most deiporal* battles that • vei
took place between tho Virginians and their lores!
foes.
After tho battle In question, in which tho Indians
were deloutod with great loss, a furl was hero
erected by the victors, which became a post oi groat
importance throughout tho sanguinary scorns ol
stnlo which almost immediately lollowod, and
which in this section ul tho country were continu
ed for many years after that ostatiltslimont of poaco
which acknowledged tho United Colonics ol A-
merica a Iroo and indepundctu tiatinn.
At tho landing of tho furl, on iho day our s'ery
opens, was fastened a fl it boat of the kind used by
Iho etrly navigators of tlto Wostorn rivers.
Upon tbo deck oi this boat, at the inom-ni we
present the scone to the reader stood fivo individu
als, alike engaged in watching a group ol pets .ns,
mostly females, who were slowly approaching tho
landing. Of those five, ono was a stout, slock no
gro. in partial livery, and evidently a house or
body servant; threw wero boatmen and borderer.*, ns
indicated by their rough, bronzed visages and
coarse attire; but the fifth was n young man, s.unu
two and twenty years of age, of a tine command
iog person, and a clear, open, intelligent counte
nance; and in the lolly carrtag-t ol his head, in tho
gleam ol his large, bright, haz I eye—ihoro was
■omethiug which denoted ono ul superior mind ;
but as wo shall havo occasion in iho course ol
our narrative to fully set forth who and wh it Eu*
geno Fairfax wa9, wo will leave him |,*r the
present, and turn to the approaching gr-up,
whom ho seemod to bo regarding with lively in
terest.
Ol this group, composed of a middle aged mm
and four females, with a black female servant l«»|-
lowingsomo five orsix paces in me rear, there was
uno whom the most casual eye would hive sin
gled out and rested upon with pleasure, The (•••
dy in question, was apparen ly about twenty
years of age, ol a slender and gncetul lucre,
and of that peculiar cast o' leaturc, which be-nte?
bning beautiful in every lineament, rarely tails to
affoc; the bohoidor with something like a chirm.
Her traveling costume—a flue brown habit, high
In the neck, buttoned closely over tho bosom and
coming down to her small pretty feet, without
trailing on the ground—was both neat and becom
ing; and with her riding-cop and its waving os
trich plume, set gaily above her flowing curls, her
appearance contrasted forcibly with tho rough,
uupolUhod looks of thoso of her sox beside her,
with their linsoy bed-gowns, scarlot flannel petti
coats, and blenched linen caps.
' "Oh, Blnncho," said ono oftho more venerable oi
her femalo companions, pursuing a conversation
which had boen maintained since quitting the open
fort behind them, "I cannot boar to let you go;
for it just soians to mo ns if something were going
to huppon to you; and whon I feel that way, some
thing generally does huppon."
"Well, aunt,” returned Blancho, with alight
laugh, "I do not doubt in the loast that something
Will happen—for I expect ono of thoso days to
reaob my dear father and blossed mother, and give
them such nn embraco as is duo from a dutiful
daughter to her parents—and that will be some
thing that has not happened for two long years at
lout."
"Bat I don’t mean that, Blanche," returned the
other, somewhat petulantly; "and you just laugh
like agny and thoughtless girl, when you ought
to be serious, Becnuse you hnvo cotuo safe thus
far, through a partially settled country, you think,
perhaps, your own prolty face will ward off dan
ger in tho tnoro perilous wilderness—but I warn
you that a fearful journ »y is before you ! Scarce
ly a boafdescends the Ohio, that docs notencouu-
ter more or loss peril from tho suvugos that piowi
along either shore; and somo of them thnt go down
freighted with human life, ure heard of no more,
and none ever return to tell tho tale."
"But why repent this to mo, dear aunt,” return,
ed Blancho, with n more serious nir, "whon yon
know it is my destiny, either good or bad, to at
tempt tbo voyage? My parents have gout for me
to join (bom in tbefr new borne, rind ft is my duty
to go to them, bo tho poiil whnt it may."
"You never did know what it was to fear!" pur*
cuod tho good woman, rather proudly. "No," rlu
re pea ted, turning to the others,"Blanche Bertram!
never did know what it was to fern, I believe!"
"Just liko her father!” joined in tho husband of
tho matron, tho brothor of Blanche's mother, the
commander of tho station, and tho middle-aged
gentleman mentioned as ono of the party; "a true
daughter of n true soldier. Her father, Cotoucl
Philip Bertrand, God bless him for a truo heart !
never did seem to know whnt it was to four—and
Blanche is just like him."
By this timo tho parties had roachod tho hont:
and tbo young mnn already described— Eugene
Fairfax, the socrotury ol Blanche's father—at once
stepped forward, mid, in n polite nnd deferential
manner, offered hi# band to tho different females,
to assist them on hoard. Tho hand of Blanche
was tho last to touch his—and then hut fdigh'ly,
ns she sprung quickly nnd lightly to tho deck-
hut n close observer might have doturteJ tho slight
flush which mantled his noble, expressive features,
na his eye for a single inatnnt met tiers. .She might
herself have seen it—perhaps sho did—but there
was no corresponding glow on her own bright,
pretty face, ns she inquired, in the calm, dignified
tone of ono haring the right to put tho q tusiiun,
and who might also have boon nwarn of the ii o
quality of position bolwcen herself and him rhe-
addressod:
"Eugene, is everything propnrod for our depart
ure? It will not do fur our hunt to spring a leak
again, as it did coming down the Knnnwtiu—fur it
will not be snfo for us, ] am told, to lou-h cither
sboro between ilio ddlereut torts and trading-p-rts
on our routo. this Bide of our destination,—the
Fulls of the Ohio.'*
"No, indeed!" rejoined her mint, quickly: "it
will be as much m your lives o:« worth to veuiurc
n foot from tho main current of the Ohio—fur news
reaohed us only tho other day, that many boats
had been Attacked this spring, and several lust,
with ail on board."
"No ono feels more concerned about tho safe
passage of Miss Bertrand than myself," replied
Eugene, in a deferential tone; "and since our ur-
rival here, I have left nothing uudono that 1
thought might possibly add to hor security nnd
comfort.”
"That is true, to mv personal knowledge,” joined
In the undo of Blnncho; "and I thank you, .Mr.
Fairfax, ia behalf of my fair kinswoman. Tl oro
will, perhaps,” lie pursued, "bo no great danger,
■o long as you keep in the current; hut your watch
must not bo neglected for n singlo moment, either
night or day; nnd do not, I most solemnly charge
and warn you, under any circumstances, or m,
any pretence whatsoever, sutler yourselves to be
decoyed to either shore!"
"I bopo we understand our duty hotter,Colonel,"
said one of the men respoctfully.
"I doubt it not,” replied the commander of the
Point; "I believe you aro nil faithful and truo tnen.
or yon would nut hnvo been sclootol by the tigent
of Colonel Bertrand, for taking down tnoro preeioii-
freight than you over carried bef ire; but still the
wisest and tho best of mon havo lost thoir lives by-
giving oar to tho most earnest appeals «f humani
ty. You understand whnt I mean? While tnen,
apparently In tbo greatest distress, will hail your
boat, represont thorns elves ns having just escupod
from tbo Indians, und bog of you for tho love id
God, in thn most piteous tone*, to como to thoir
relief; but turn a donf oar to them—to each nnd all
of tbom—even should you know tho pleaders to
bo of your own kin; for in suoh a onse your own
brother might decoivo you—not wilfully nnd vol
untarily, perhaps—butbocanso of being gomlod
on by tbo savages, themselves concealed. Ye*,suoh
things have boon known as ono friend being thus
used to lure another to his destruction; and so b
cautions, vigilant, brave und true, and may the
good God keep you all from barm!”
As he fluished speaking, Blancho prooeodctl to
take an nffuotionato leave of all, receiving mnny a
tender metingo for her parents from those who
held them in love and veneration; and tbo l>uut
ewung out. nnd began to float down with tho cur
rent, now fairly entered nnnn the most dnngerou-
p or lion of a long and perilous journey.
Tuo father **f Blanche, Colonel Philip Bertrand
was a native of Virginia, and a desoci dam of nn*
of the Huguenot refugees, who fled tro n their
native land after the revocation of dm olid of
Nantz In 1095. Ho Und been an olik'iir of n»mc
noto daring the Revolution—a warm politmal on
personal friend of the author of the Dccaratlo
of Independence—tod a gentleman who had at-
of his associates

and ootemporarles.
Though at one time a man of wealth, Colonel
Bertrand had lost much, nnd suffered much,
through British Invasion; and whan, shortly after
tho close of the war, he had met with a few more
serious reverses, ho had boon Inin tonccopt n grout
of land, near tho foils oftho Ohio, now Lotii-ville,
toiidoreii him by Virginia, which then hold juris
diction over tlm entlro territory now constituting
tho State of Kentucky.
Tho grant had decided tho Colonel upon reeking
his new possessions and building up n now homo
in the theu Far Wort, mid as hi# wife had insisted
upon accompanying him on his first tour, ho had
assented to her desire, on condition thnt Blancho
should bo lull among hor friends, till such time ns
n plnco could lie prepared which might in sotno

Blancho would glrdly hnvo eono with her pa

ns ho was n man ot positive diameter, and u rigid
