£0* The card of thank! to Captain McNol-

sertion in yeaterday’d paper. Wo cheerfully give
it a place to day.
Acoidmt.—Yesterday, about 2 o'clock, as Mr.
Edward Padelford, ir., and bis s-.n.Dr. Geo. Padel-
ford, got ioto their buggy, mar the counting
room of the former, and bef-ro the reina were
fairly In band, the bora# turned suddenly to run
up the inclined paved road leading fr»tn the bare
of the Exchange, and np«et the vehicle, throwing
the Messrs. Padelford on the stone pavement. Mr.
5?., we are gra'itled to state, received nn other in-
Jury than a severe bruise near hi* right temple and
another on one of his wrista. The Dr. escaped un
hurt.
Taa Golf Roan.—An adjourned meeting of
the stockholders of this road was held yesterday
in the Council Chamber. Stock to an amount ex
ceeding $1,300,000 was represented. The pro.
eeedingt are in another oolumn. The President!
report is to be printed in pamphlet farm and dis
tributed amongst the stockholders.
Tax No* Eccrxtiuc Exoixb.—This remarkable
intention has been perfeoted by Messrs. Stacy A
Way, and will to-day be exhibitel at H. II. Li <-
Tille’e Machine 3b-p. It is one of the urnst re
markable inventions of the age: and if successful,
of which tho«o who have examined it seem to en
tertain no doubt, it will cause a complete revo
lution in the present style of building sterna ma
chinery, and induce its application to many pur
pose* from which it if cow debarred by the ex
pense attending it.
£33* Wo regret that we were mistaken in our
articloon Insurance, yesterday, in stating that the
Southern Mutual Company had been removed to
8outh Carolina. Tho Life department alone was
moved there; the Fire remaining in Georgia, The
Marine was dieo -ntinuod, an experience <>f several
years having satisfied the S "ithern Mutual that
tho established rates for Marine Insurance are n«-t
adequate to the risk undertaken; that branch of
business has been abandoned, at least, for the pres-
cot. The S-uthern Mutual, however, still con.
tlnues to insnre produce and merchandise in steam-
boati running onjthe riven of Georgia and between
8 irannah and Florida. We would also remark, in
in this connection, that the Southern Mutual and
tho Augusta Insurance Companies have been noted
for their liberality in settling claims. The former
has long bad ao agency in this city, and d<<no
Ih-s largest amount of business of any offi-e loca
ted here. This goes to prove, that our merchants
w iuld prefer to pat oni-e h one institutions, ami vre
h m- may lo.d to the establishment of other Com
panies.
Tho Carmichael Mills at Auguwu. commenced
grinding Q tur from now wheat on the 2lst. On tho
l ime day eight barrols were forwarded to Charles
ton by railroad, shipped tbonco to Hew York by
ate uner, where they will bo shipped by tho Persia,
to Liverpool.
Life Insurance.
The life of Ira. D. fiagi.ee, of Apalachicola, was
Insured by John C. Ru-e, of C<duiuhu«, in tho
Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co., for $2,000. It
was a life policy, and tho nnnual payment was due
on the 10th April, 1347. It wa« not paid by that
day. On the !l:h April, 1817, liugbee died. When.
R ise hoard i' he tendered to the agent the annuel
payment of $97 40, but the agent wuuld n«; ro>
eeive it, nor would he pay the amount of the in.
snrance.upon which Ru<e brought suit against the
Company fur $2,000 and rested his cate upon a
dauto in the prospectus of the Company, which
was blinded to him by the agent at the time the
insurance was effected, which reads as f .Hows :
Every preoaution is taken to prevent a forfeiture
of policy.
*‘A party neglecting to settle hi*annual premium
within thirty days after it is due, Ac.; forfeits the
interest ho has in the policy.”
Tbe company set up as a defence that the "pre
mium was not paid on or before the 10th day of
April, according to tbe terms of the policy.’’
Judge Davis, presiding, decided that tho do-
fendants were estopped by tbeir own net and de
claration in the prospectus, from settiog up this
plea against the plaintiff’s claim.
“If the defendants by their "prospectus” indue*
cd tho plaintiff to net ns he did, and re#t upon its
assurance of o credit of thirty .'ays from nud nftor
tho lOib of April fur the premium, then the for.
felture was caused by their own nets; and it cer
tainly would not be right or legal to permit them
to take advantage of a forfeiture which they were
the oause of.
"It is quite immaterirl whether the "prospectus”
of the Company is held to be a waiver of the forfeit-
are or to estop them from insisting upon it in this
case, in either view they have no defence; and
the plaintiff having tendered the second year's
promium within tbe thirty days is entitled to re
cover.”

No More diatom Hniua Duties—Direct
Taxation.
In Congreii, Mr. lluyrc, of South Carolina, hat
tnado a report, aa Chairman of a saiaot Committea,
recommending i
1. An immediato resort to direct taxation.
2. Tbe tatiff to be used, simply as a fiscal in
atrumantality (?); not aa a means of protection.
3. Entire abolition of duties nn imports.
j 4. K ich slate to pay its "quota” of the Fodeia)
Government expenses.
5. Navigation laws to be repealed ; so as to put
all ships of all nations and races, white, block, yel
low, on tho same footing aa Amaricao. Coasting
trade equnlly fiee.
j This w iuld seem to bo the future Democratic
theory and platform, Mr. Toombs, in bis sapient
! letter to tbe Southern Convention, held in Savan-
| nnh, ' ffen-d n similar panacea. All these schemes,
look to therqu lity of tbe S.u h with tho North;
Or rather, they nre cogitations in this wi*e:
! the South cannot huvo big ships and white mtllui.*
| it 1* better that the big ships and white sailors of
| the North should be jlnbergatltd, by foreign na*
j lions. A capital conception f
j If this platform heed pted, it may turn out to
I be ns great n gain for tho South, as the repeal of
, tbe Missouri Compromise) iherc is suah a thing
as a mao idling uff bis own peso. The prediction
(is now made, that tho North will lie perdu—or lie
: p.w—on this subject. Aud when the vo'e is tnken,
the Democratic party will have to boast of an im*
| memo majority in Congress.
| But before wo bite iff our own noses, let us seo
j what the State of Georgia would annually pay, as
{ her "quota,” under this brilliant system of direct
taxation. Representation would govern the rate
of taxation. Even so) Then we have 500,000
whites, and three fifths of 500.000 black* (300,000)
j rooking a toxable total, of 800.000 constituency.—
I N»w, if the twenty five millions of people in the
| Uuitcd States pay sevonty-fivo millions of revenue,
ias nt present, it follows mathematically, that each
‘one of the 800,000 taxable subjects in Georgia
would pay three dollars. Or in other words, every
! nigger baby, man, woman and child, would pay $3
n year, t ix to the Federal Government. We pay
to tbe State Government about 40 cants a Ifead.—
The Federal Government would thus tax our no-
gros, only one million of doll-re annually. The
I N»rtb would chuckle over slavery then, and to
mistake. Tbatisuil! Abracadabra.
Crop#. 4k c.
Upsun Co., May 2itb.
Editor Republican : The crops in this portion
of Georgia uro looking remarkably well. There
are excellent stands both of cotton and corn, and
but little grass or weeds to Interfere with the op*
eritious of the piautor. Indeed, tho spring,
though backward in sumo respects, has been un-
iusu.liy floe tor the cultivation of crops, and
the pro-puot at this time is highly favorable.—
Wheat and oats ure not doing so well on account,
hero un i there, of rust. Tho prospect of an a-
bundant yield of ruit and garden vegetables, is
mmt cheering.
i The breadth of land devoted to cotton Is tucni-

This is the genoral rule, to which there is hardly
t ever an exception. They almost invariably plant

The Accidents on the Churlcaton Oar*
A writer in tho Charleston Conner, over thealg-
naturo of Piloti, givos the following explanation
of the causes of aix acoidents which occurred in
crossing the bar at that port:
"1st, the ship Fidei, in crossing the Bar in tow
of tbe steatn-tug, after having crossed the Bar and
was on the inner edge of the shoal, was struck by
a heavy squall and driven nshorv, in spite of the
tug nnd ship's anchor. 2odly, tho ship ('alHmbi
ana, in attempting to sail in over the Uur with n
leading wind, when she hud gotten into tbe nar
rowest and shoaled place in tho channel, was sud
denly struck aback, there not being room enough
to box the ship uff and fill on her again, there waa
no remedy in the power of the pilot to prevent tho
ship fmm going nshoro. 3dly, tho ship Moultrie,
it boirg spring tides, high water, smooth bar nnd
a free wind hut light, in tho pilot's judgment
the ship would coiue in, the pilot boat whose du
ty it was to have sounded the Bar, not knowing
that there whs nny ship boarded off the Bar, she
living so far away was n-*t aide to get to liie Bar
in time to sound for the ship, consequently the id
iot was left to his own judgment in the matter ;
whereas ibere not being a* much water ns he ex
peeled, there living su.*h variations in the tides
ns no human judgment cm always foresee, the
consequence wus ihv ship stopped on tbe liar.—
4thly, the stdp Raltic, standing in fmm sen just
before daylight, the light un the lighthouse being
«ut, and no other lights to be seen but those un
Sullivan’s Island, the pilot of tho ship took them
f«r the lighthout on rnttlem-ko shoals, and the
pilot ordered n cost of the lead token, when Incor
rect souudiiigs were given him, giving mure water
than they really had, as was proved by the sh>*rt
distance‘ho had gone when the second cast of the
lead was ordered and five fathoms wbb given hiui,
there beiny not more than fifteen minutes between
tbe twn casts of iht lead ; the pilot ordered tho
wheel hove hard up for wearing the ship round,
alien in the net of wearing the ship struck. Next,
the barque Veletta. coming in Maffitt’s Channel,
properly called Beach Channel, with n free wini
but light, after getting inside of the ou'er bu-y,
the wind diod away nud left her becalmed, so that
she became altogether unmnnngeble. Thcro re
maining no remedy for bettering the condition of
the vessel, tho channel being so very narr-.w she
would have sailed ashore before she could have
swungtoher nnchor.the pilot thought the best thing
would bo t» let the tide diift her in ns far ns it
would, there being no other alternative. Then tho
barque Pollock, in tow of the steatu tug going our.
tho vessel steering badly, getting « sheer »o the
port side of the steamer, just in turning the point
of tho stone breaker, before her sheer could bo
broken, stopped on the point, notwithstanding the
pilot had the speaker and muiutopsuii set to aid
the vessel in steering.”

The Catholic Church and the Slave Ques
tion.—The Arcbhi#hops and Bishops of the Cath.
lie church, who recently assembled in provincial
Council in Baltimore, hove issued ii pastoral letter to
the clergy and laity of that denomination. Among
other tulg.-cts to which it refers is (ho slavery
question. We make tho following ex'met:
Tbe peaceful and c*»n*orvative character of our
principles, which nro ndnp ed to every form of
government and every state of society, has been
tested and made manifest in the groat political
struggles that have agitated the country on tbe
•uhjeci of domestic slavery. Although history
plainly testifies that the church has always be
friended the poor and laboring u1h*s»-s, and effec
tually procured the mitigation of tbo evils attach*
ud to servitude, until through her mild influence it
passed away from the .unions of Europe, yet she
lias never disturoed established order or ei-danger-
ed the peace of society by following theories of
philanthropy.
Fd'hful to tho teachings and example of tho
-ipustlos, she has always taught cervanl# to obey
their masters, not serving to the eye merely, but
ns to Christ, nnd in His name she aointnnnd# mas
ters to treat their sorvunts with humanity nnd jus
tice, reminding them that they also have a M iner
in heaven. Wo have not, therefore, found it no
eussary to modify our teaching with a view of a
daptiug it to local circumstonces. Among us thcro
has huca no agitation on this subject. Our clergy
have wisely abstained fr-tn all interference with
the judgment of the faithful, which should be fri-e
on all questions of polity aud social order, within
the limite of the dnorriue nnd law of Christ. We
exhort you, venerahlo brethren, to pursue this [
course, s« becoming "the ministers of Christ and
diipen*ers of tbe mysteries of God.” Let the
dead bury their dead. Leave to worldling* the
cares nnd anxiulira of political partisanship, the
[struggles for ascendency, und Ike mar iflciMi«i,# of
di npp anted ambition. Do not, in any way,
identify the interests wf our holy faith with tbe
fortune* uf eny party; but, preachiog pe .co and
good will to all manklod, study only to win to
troth the deluded children of error, nnd to turrit
! the confidence of your flocks, ao that, becuming
| oil to ail, you may gain all to Christ.
The V. n. Ship Macrclonlfm.
The Norfolk Herald, in speaking of the contem
plated cruise of this noble old ship, say*:—
The Macedonian i# 171 feet in length on her
spar d«?ek. ah ut 1,400 tons burden; (tarries on gun
deck JO 63pounders and 2 32 pounders, on the
spar deck, one forward and one aft, 2 10 inch gun*,
wi h sol d -hot, weighing 120 pound*, and shells
weighing 80 pounds. Every .part of her is credi-
itublo to our yard and to tbe government. It may
not lie amiss to say that the Macedonian was cap
tured in 1812 (Oet. 25) by the frigate United
Statu-, under (he command of the gallant Deca
tur. She was commanded by thu than Cnpt.
John Carden, whose demise was noticed by the
lust foreign mail. She was then said to bo ” Ihe
best tn<*del fora frigate, nud accounted the most
■•"tuplctcly fitted vessel in the Driti*h service.”—
Modem improvements rave tnado her now a far
more f rtuidablo -hip than she was originally. In
speaking uf the Macedonian, some speak of her
ue a sloop of war, she was captured a frigate—did
service as a frigate—and should not, in herald
age, bo degraded by a second ra'e appellation. It
i* a rather singular coincidence that Capt. U. P.
Levy, who c»tnm vnds her now on tho Medimrra-
nuan cruise, was one of the officer* wh i, in 1812,
.-•ssiited in working her into Now York harbor uf
ter her cupture.
IIcw to Keep oun Houses Cool.—Tho Scion*
tifio American gives the following directions
for the securing of cool hou»es in warm weather :
The first necessity is o thorough draft. This can
always he obtained by opening every door and
window in the basement, the top of every window
nbove, and by throwing each door wide open; but
above all, he sure that the trap d »--r in the roof is
open, and there is plenty of air r«om from it down
the stairs, so that which ever be the direction of the
wind, there will he at least one ascending current
of air in the house. Another requisite is shade.
Oar ctninon slat shutters answer well for tho win
■low# hut the most cheep und convenient shelter lor
the roof is to cover it thickly • Bn straw, dried
reeds, ur rushes. These will resist the influence
«f the noonday »un, and keep the garrett almost i *
cool ns the basement. One of tbe must simple
methods, und at the same time cheapest means of
lowering the temperature of ii room, ia to wet a
cloth of any size, the larger the bette#, und suspend
it in tbe place you want cooling; let the room be
well ventilated, and tbe temperature will sink fr an
ten to twenty degree* in less than an hour. The
above hints will he useful to m my, audits a last
suggestion, wo will inform tbo reader that, in sum
mer, it is well to keep a solution ot chloride of lime
in the house, and occasion ally sprinkle it in the
more frequented puna, us tbe passages and stairs.
