cases this has been done. Honta are so high that
it is pretty difficult for tho tnlddliug and humbte

already been seen in this direction. The projected
road can bring nothing hero, nnd.tnke notiilug from
henoo that cannot bo carried fur loss than one-half
tho price by stenuiors already running. This is
proved by the Waynesboro' road this vory sonson.
Generally, it tnuy bo said, without foar of contra

more of cotton bore than oamo before. It only
trtkos a portion of that always brought by the

Outrage on the Ship John and Albert.
OsptatQ Crowell, of tbe ship John and Albert,
whlob arrived at New Orleans ou Monday last,
gives the following aooount of tho outrage on his
ship by one of the British cruisers between the
ooaeta of Florida and Cuba, abrlefnolico of which
we bavo previously published. Wo copy from
tho Picayune ;
May 17th, 1858, nt son on board ship John and
Albert, of Boston, H. Crnyroll, master.
At noon, Btono Key Lighthouse, Cuba, boro 8.
W„ about 12 miles distaneo, a grout nnmbor of
vessels in sight, stooring different courses. Ob.
surved a two topsail sohuonor standing out from
Cardonas, as I supposed, nnd bound lor Havana,
ns thoro aro two schooner propetlor packets in that
trade.
At two o’olock sho was a little forward of our
banm stooring the same courso, and ratbor going
ahead of us, as tho breeze was light, not tuoro
than six knots por hour. I occasionally lookod at
her, but saw no colors or pennant flying. The lat
ter oould not be soon on account of her top gallant
sails being hoistbd up close under it, nnd her colors
on account of her quarter boat, as £ afterwards
found out. I still took him to be that pao|iot and
none other, nnd hnd ho choso ho oould hnvo curne
within bailing distunoo. Evou if he oould not ho
oould have fired a musket to attract our attention
towards him. I should bavo had the Amoricnu
flag flying ns soon as pusslblo, in answer tn any
nation’s flag, whether man-of-war or not. Butso
far from doing so, lie allowed bis dregher looking
schooner to go along side nud sido for more than
an hout, until lho breeze freshened to a nine knot
breezo and more.
We pnstod and left him about tho sumo distance
astorn, when he fired n gun. I remarked they
were having a Jubiloo on board or cleaning their
signal gun. This was about 3 o'clock, la about
ten or fifteen minutes we saw him swing bar off,
with bis broadside toward us, nnd fire again, tho
shot striking about sixty yards astern of us, near
ly a direct lino. I immediately ordered tbe o»lors
to ha hoisted. Hud got thum bout on and was
liuisting when he fired another gun, tho shot fall
ing Tarthor astern. Whon bokoptoff tn tiro tho
second gun I caught sight of n blue (lug flying
betwecu his quarter bout anil nquaro mainsail, on
a flag-staff nt her stern. But to tell what it was,
with tho imperfect vlow I could got, was im
possible, tho distance being sn great. I had
tho colors set for some ten or fifteen mitiutus,
nnd thinking ho was satisfied bud thum liuulcd
down.
ilo again swung hor off and gnvolis another gun
which shot foil n long way short of us. Tho last
one was nt about three hours fi.rly fivo minutes.—
Soon after we snw him Imul -up bis square main
sail, nnd sntv smoke coming from hia smoke stack.
Sho was then nltnnst hull duwn, as sho wus very
deop nnd low in tho water.
After four, the broazo began to ieavo us again,
nnd he was gotting up steam fast nnd hegnu t«
gain on an, I hnd tho American flag hoisted nnd
kept (lying. At bulf pist fivo wo wont to supper.
At fiftoen minutes nf six tbo officer of tho dock re
ported that ho waa keeping off to Oro again, nnd
thnt wo had got n strong breeze, which breezo ho
brought along with him, which was lho occasion
of his coming up so fast, lie fired his gun, the
shot striking close alongside to windward.
I had tho ship brought to tho wind immediately
studding sails set below and aloft on both Bides,
and tho wind blowing n ten knot breezo with tucks
of courses down. Tho royal nnd studding sails,
halyards nnd tacks a flying, enursos half hauled up
nud everything atnrtliug enough to take the spars
out of the ship. Afterwards hud to out away hal
yards nnd brucos to got studding sails cloar. While
in thnt position, hnvo to tho wiud, he closed to us
ho fired another gun, the shot passing over our
heads and striking iu the water closo to ioeward.
It must boro gone just over tho bulwarks and for
ward of tho mainmast to have struck in tho water
so closo to leoward. Sho then rohnded to und
sent a boat with two officers on board.
As thoy entno on hoard, one of the officers ex«
tended his hand. I told him I did not shako hur.ds
with pirates. They said they were no pirates, hut
belonged to a British man-of-war. I asked thorn
if thoy called that drogher n man-of-war. I snw
fur the first sho hnd a pennant flying, as they wore
furling the top gnllunt sails. Thoy asked for tho
ship’s papors, lookod over tho register nnd crew
list, noted down where from, nnd bound, nnd thon
loft, without going or locking undor dock. I might
have had tho ship full nf negrous or filibusters, und
thoy none tho wi^nor. They left looking very much
ns if they bad done a very ungentlomunly ad, nil-
vising mo always to keep my colors flyingwhon in
company with u British mnn-of-wnr, nnd said I
ought to thank thorn for tboir forboaranco in not
dismasting ur, then wont over the sido, leaving
their note hook behind them. Tho steward hand
ed it to thorn, Thoy shovod off in their boat
without telling mo I might fill away, untill I asked
them ns thoy wore going past tho store.
As I filled nwny I saw a steamor nhond, coming
toward us, (it was about 7 o’clock,) shortly after n
large 8teum-frigato passed close to us, wont a littlo
ways, and boro to nnd made signals with lights
for tho schooner to come to hor which sho did, nnd
hovo to undor his lee, n fow mutuums afterwards
wo lost sight of thuir lights. 1 export tho steam

Novil Method to prevent Potato Hot —Somo Rol-
gian boys, a few years since, for amusement. Inserted
some pea* into potatoes, nnd planted them. The result
was an unusual yield of pens nnd a crop ol tubers, per
fectly sound, though In a field whom tho pola'oes were
badly affected. Acting on tho hint Mr. Jackson of
Leeds, England, developed tho theory that the notato,
being deficient In nitrogen, would receive an equivalent
of that article from the pea, during tho time of growing,
and so its tendency to disease would bo counteracted.—
He then tiled tlie experiment, Inserting four or fivo
peas into each potato, carefully avoiding injury to tho
eyes, aud then plant ing in the usual way. Tho result
was perfect success—an unusual yield of both peas nnd
potatoes, and the latter perfectly free from diseasu. The
tuhors were found healthy tho next Spring, and wore
again planted with the same result.
