VALEDICTORY.
With this issuo of tbe Sentinel my
connection with it closes. For a few
months past I Imre found it pleasant
to devote a portion of my time to the
paper; bnt as oilier affairs demand mv
attention I must withdraw, and in so
doing wonld respectfully aRk my
friends and patrons of the paper to
continue their liberal support to it.
Mr. R. A. Daniel, the founder of the
enterprise, and who has been th“ lead
ing spirit in the establishment since
its commencement Again assumes en
tire control, and I would ask tbe pub
lic to extend tbe liberal patronage
upon the enterprise that it deserves.
R, F. LESTER,
THE CAPITAL QUESTION.
The Atlanta Oonatitution is becom
ing gome what exercised over tbe re
moval of tbe eapital back to Midcdge
ville, Tbo Tbomaeville Enterprise, in
tbe diccaraion of tbe qosfioD t ia making
some very pointed and just remarks.
‘■But,"esya the Atlanta Constitution, in
vindicating Atlanta’s claims and tbe
peculiar fitness of tbo Opera House,
•we admit that the preseut capital
needs .improvements, Loth arclutcotual
and scoostic, but at tbe same time we
maintain that the oIJ boiling at Mil-
Icdgeville will not accommodate tbe
government of tbo State as it is now
constituted—tbat the Legislative ball
arc inadequate to the arcommndali"o of
tho General Assembly ami that tbe
members could not find adequate and
comfortable hotel accommodations."
Wo should think that tbo Opera
blouse'did need itnpro* emeots, when
every Legislature for the "pas; four or
five years have been a| p int D; CO3 -
mittees to see if tbo building is sate,
Th n las been two or three panics
when tbe walls cracked, and during the
Senatorial el ctii n tbe fear manifest, and
tvss not without foundation.
Again, the cspitol building at Mil
ledgcvillo lias been enlarged, or at
least tbe basement or first floor has
been fitted op for a Supreme Court
room, aud a number of other rooms
were improved. There is no ro< m for
improvement about tbo Opera House,
unleaa tbe State goes to a stdl greater
expense of buying tho adjacent lots,
which would bu a stupendious piece of
folly; for aa it ia the Opera House is
too uear the railroad, and the noire by
tbe ringing of the engine bells and tbe
whistle is intolerable to the 'ogislatnrs.
Aa to tbo acoustics or sound iu tho
Representative llall it is miserable be
yond remedy; the light slid more so.
Tbo buying of tho Opera House was bnt
• huge and shameful swindle upon tho
State. Undue and selfish influence
carried the capitol to Ailantn, and a
piebald convention of carpcl-baggi rs,
scalawags, negroes, mulattos, quadroons
with n few intelligent Georgians, in a
hopeless minority, gave to ua our pres
ent Constitution, that baa so
n premium for cheating, rascality, ete.,
iu an unheard of homestead law; besides
making Atlanta tbo capital of tbe .State
with the proviso understood, by the
deeleration of the oitiaena of tbe city,
that a eapitnl building would bo fur
nished free fo ten years. How trutli
fcilly and faithfully the pledge has been
kept, let tbo shanxlul expense toe
State has been ompillcd to font anew r
tbo question,
Aa to room, tho capitol square in
lVlilledgcvillo lias twenty ncsii, and
buildings can be put up for any of the
departments at a very reasonable ex
pense. Wo will, at our leisure, touch
upon the subject again. Let (he people
make that one of tbo issue* in the elec
tion of delegates. Will the Const •>'(ion
come out aud call upon tbo people so to
do, and thereby get tho video of voters
.and settle the vext question? Do not
fear, but court an expression; if the peo
ple bo sovereign respect that soverigo
ty. Will you do it ? Wo call upon
the pres* of tbe Stato to make tho issue
Put tbe question direct to all candidates.
As to the hotel accommodation, the
very hour tbo people say back to Mil
ledgoville, there is a company now or
ganized readv to put up a hotel as large
aa tbe old Milledgeville Hotel, biside*
the buiMieg of several smaller ones. For
then tho eajital question will be settled
for tbe next hundred years.— Savannah
News.
“Ag*in wo repeat it.” eays the Abbe
ville Medium, "tbo people of South
Carolina will be eotisfled with nothing
but Hampton or revolution. For
months they have borne insult and out
rage and wrong; they have suffered in
all their interests and exercised a spirit
of kindness and forbearance toward their
political opponents and under all cir
cumstances and in every emergency
they have kept the peace. They have
put forth every effort to obtain a set
tlement of the question at issue without
violenee and bloodshed. After whip
ping the enemy at the ballot-box they
carried their esse into the conrta and
they have waited a decision with a
heroic devotion to right never befora
equalled in any people ” - •
