A TED BIBLE CONFESSION
For many a long year I have earned
this close locked wiitiin tny heart till it
has seared both heart and onrin. After
begging and praying for a week they
have at la-t allowed inc p n and ink ;
here on this untouched w iit paper I
can tell all. Alice Walton was my first
and only intimate friend. \V e were
fast friends from the beginning, for she
was of a sweet, guileless and clinging
nature. I was naturally secretive
strong, self-reliant and somewhat dis
posed to dominate those with whom
1 was hi ought in contact, My friend
ship for Inr surprised myself qi t o as
much as aoy one else, and 1 was quite
as muon at a loss to understand it.
She was like a lily, fair, s'ender and
lovely, with dovelikc eyes and hair like
corn silk I was dark us a Spanish
girl, with huir like midnight iml lus
trous black ey>s, and many an admirer
had told mo in the days of my prime
that no Spanish giil could compete with
my beauty or grace. But they wero
not b yond tl c competition of oua fair
gir', and she w- n, r : gbt under my fine
eyes and in the face of my rich South
ern beauty, the only nian whoso love I
craved, tho one heart tor which I would
gladly havo exchanged my own. When
we finally said good-by io each other
at school, I made an express stipulation
that sho should come and stay a month
with mo, after she had first returned
home ami remained a week with her
ownfiiends I counted tho days till
came, for I retdly love I the gill, and
longed to share with hor, as a friend,
new and delicious joy which she lad
never known. A far-'ff cousin of my
mother, so far off ns to ho no relation
at all had conic in my absence to spend
the summer with ti*. Of course l had
heard ol him in my letters from home
and was somewhat disappointed at the
prospect of having him there during
Alice’s visit, for hearing him always re
ferred to as my mot hoi 's cousin, of
course, I fancied him old and gray
haired. My sa.isfuctn n equalled my
surprise when, Henry Godfrey, I found
him to to a young mail of twenty five,
handsome, accomplished, gay. good hit
morid, in short, my ideal of au elegant,
well-bred, refined gentleman. I was
pleased enough to call him cousin, anil
ns I Icarnol to hnow him better, more
than pleasod to remember that ho was
ouly a coo do by courtesy, I loved
Henry Godfrey. I believed I loved
him from the first although I 'lid not
then understand my own feeling", and I
had but little doubt that he responded
to the feeling. He was more than gen
tle and kind in his manner. Betides an
affectionate regard for me, 1 thought I
detected in his manner a certain dcfoi
ence which to me. indicu cd tho ten
der devotion of the lover 1 knew lie
had never c.-r and for any woman befoie
lie met me, and knew that I w..s hcuu
liful—what woman is unconscious ol
her own charms V And so I felt just
ified hi believing that Henry Godfrey
car'd for me, although no word of love
had yet passed between us. I told Al
ice nothing of thi", Iri solved my in
nocent triumph to he given in cm fi
deice during cur first evening together,
and though I would have preferred to
present Henry us my affianced lover, I
quite iutcudcd to confess to her frai sly
the love for him which I had siarocly
confessed to myself. She was a week
later than she bud promised, and came
unexpectedly wheu she did corno, ar
riving the day hi fore that on which she
had told us she was corning. There
wan no one to meet her at the station,
t ut "lie hud been such a favorite on her
previous visits that sho was known to
all the neighborhood, aud a neighbor,
who hud by chance been at tho stati n
when she arrived, (nought her over'to
us The first I knew of her arrival was
when she ran up to me where I sat with
Henry, listening while he toad Tenny
son in that fine, rich voiee that hud be
come the sweetest music of my life.
She tl mg her arms about my neck and
embraced und kissed me with childlike
enthusiasm I then turned to intro
duce her to H nry. He had risen and
st< od gazing on lo r With a (ace illumi
nated with admiration, such an expres
sion bh he had nev r mined on me in
what I thought his most fervent mo
ments of devotion. I turrnd cold all
over, and I felt that tho color ha I left
my face, but I struggled to retain my
composure and prcscuted them to etch
other. Then I turned lo look ngaiu
more closely at her. Her gaze met his
with a sweet frankness that half re
flected Ids admiration, aud the pink in
her checks deepened to a blush. They
would love each other, they dil al
ready. I saw it aud f< It it then, as
well as whi n I finally knew it hy strong
passionate and ardent words, ami al
ready the daik fires of jealousy con
sumed my soul I helped her to un

told tto ui away in toe bureau drawers

spoke of it. Tho days glided by fast
1 uough yet iu mi cry they nf'en drag.
But my heart and brain were on fire,
my thoughts (lew wildly in every direc
tion, and were so constant that 1 seemed
always bu>y One evei-i ig in the twi
light, before the lights were brought in,
l sat sad and wretched in cur great
long parlor, in a deep armchair iu a
corner of the room, besides being con
cede 1 in the Henry and
Alice entered from the garden where
they had been walking among tho roses
for the past hour. I was too listless
md miser. ble, besides being horribly
jealous to caro whether I played the
eavesdropper or not, so laid quite still,
although knowing it would bo listening
to al l or let -a-te
“Bu’, Henry,’’ said Alice, apparently
cci.tiauing a conversation, “I thought
when l saw you two together, that first
•lay l came, that you aud Evelyn wore
l vers ’
11 Wo ha vs never been so my darling:
You are my first and only love.”
I think ho drew her to him then and
kissed J her. Of course ho did, though
l could not see them f>r my choir was
turned from them and I dared uot
move. Presently Alice sj>'ko again ;
‘Of course it is fortunate for me,
Henry, dear tha' you should prefer my
poor benuty to Evelyn’s, hut yon know
1 can scarcely undersiaud how any man
can know her well und see hor constantly
without falling in love with her.”
“Well, bivecthcart, if I had ever
known her well enough not to feel
afrai.l of her and grovn no :u ustmned to
her stylo of beauty perhaps it is just
possible 1 might have fallen in lovo
with her, it I ha 1 'never seen von, niy
darling."
The b'ood seem .1 to rush back upon
my hear* and then surge up into my
brant, lh.ro wa" a ringing in my oars,
and 1 1 card no more. When oon
-e onfoess returned they were gone, but
1 had heard-enough—too much. Till
those last words of Henry’s, I had tried
to bear my misery bravely in dumb
despair. But now, those words from him
let loose a fury in me, I had tint hated
her till now, hut I hated her from that
moment. The moon had risen and was
flooding the world outside with silvery
light, when Al ee camo into tho room,
and approaching me gay Iv, said :
•Do come down to the luke. Wo can
have a lovely row hy moonlight, for [
promised not to go to bed till Henry
came back, so 1 could sav good-night
again,” she added, blushing brightly,
“lie has eon-3 to tho town with yout
brother. They must be back soon, but
wo might have time for a row on tho
lake before they arrive—do come.”
1 rose without a word, wound the
scarlet scurf on the back of iny chair
around my hea l uud neck and prepared
to acconi[ any her. Tho lake was less
than ton minutes’ walk from tho house,
and all the way there she kept up sue i
a run of 'unless talk that she didn’t
| notice that I hid scarcely spoken at
l all. When we had launched iho little
j boat and jumped hto her, of course 1
I did all ihu rowing, for tho delicate
j snowflakes of hands that held her nars
j merely toyed with their work. But I
S bent to mine with a will and dicing
strong and muscular although only a
slight girl, we ware soon far out on tho
water. When we woro ucarly across
my companion said : I
"livelyc, do you know tho pcnp| 0
sin ut here say this like is bottom| cßß
just half way ueross ? Isn't it absurd
a little lake like this? ”
‘ Yes, but it’s terribly deep, and wc
are directly over the spot now which
| tho country folks declare goes right
through to llio other side of tho world.
“llow perfectly ridiculous- just as if
that was possible. But don’t Icun over
in that way, Evelyn. The lako is deep
enough to drown us, even if it doesn’t
go quite to tbo other sine of the world.
“What nonsense, Alice. When I
bathe hero I oft ri swim as far out as
this and buck again just fur exorcise.”
‘ Very likely, my fair Amazon, but as
j I can’t swim, I prefer not to take my
J badi so far from tho shore —ah!’’
A loud shriek from Alice as I bent
j still further over, and tho next moment
we were struggling in the water, and
| the bout flouted from us, bottom tip
' ward. I thought for one moment I saw
I her white face above the watir, and in
ibe next instant it was gone, and though
I ihiuk I regretted my act as soon as
it was accomplished, I cool I do nothing
to save her, Jiut I shrieked for help.
My brother and Henry, who tiad just
arrived at the edge of the lake, plunged
in and swam to our assistance. With
great difficulty 1 presently lost con
sciousness—they brought mo to land.
But from that hour no mortal eyo
has looked upon her.
